We're still going ok
As I have done for much of this year, I continue to read with interest all the criticisms that many posters make of our team, our coach, our club, etc.
But I just can't share the pessimism: things still seem to be going quite well. Carlisle, Brown, Ross, Billings, Stevens, Sinclair, Newnes, Gresham, Bruce, Steele and Membrey all played particularly well today, and most of the rest were pretty good too. Sure, Lonie struggled: it's hard to take a small forward seriously if he won't take gettable kicks on goal. And Weller, although he did some good things. Dunstan had his worst game for a while, and Steven was a little disappointing too.
But we're a pretty good team. Yes, we've lost some games: all of them to teams that are stronger premiership contenders than us. Next week we face another one of those supposedly stronger teams in Richmond, but, assuming that not too many of today's side are missing through injury or suspension, we are surely a chance to beat them too.
As I said often enough before, we are a significantly better team than many of you seem to think.

Agree, apart from our kicking.
If we could kick straight we would be top four.

Don't need to wait: Sydney will almost certainly win that game. They are a significantly better side than us at the moment: I reckon they're still a good chance for the flag this year. And they'll be playing at home. The Fireman wrote:see what happens in Sydney and we'll revisit this thread.
But so what? I used the term "going ok": I wasn't suggesting we were going to be premiers this year.

Agree.
Think I asked on another thread for one of the Chicken Littles to give an appraisal of how the OTHER 17 clubs are travelling.
Reality after 14 rounds: We are in the top eight, albeit with a poor percentage but one game clear.
A win over the Tigers in Maddy's Match, on our home ground, in a game when Maddy's champion brother WILL become the greatest ever mark-taker becomes even more season defining.
Either West Coast or Port Adelaide will lose next week; we win, we jump them.

Re: We're still going ok
Our kicking for goal is dreadful, especially in the first half of games. We could have won today's game, and last week's and the week before, much more easily if we had kicked straight, and we might also have beaten the Eagles, Geelong and the Dogs.Enrico_Misso wrote:Agree, apart from our kicking.

But, even with the bad goal kicking, we have still won 8 out of 14. We bloody well should be playing finals footy this year.

We haven't really been playing good footy for over a month... but sometimes you've gotta win ugly before you win pretty.

We're going OK, but I was personally hoping we'd be doing a bit better than that. Apart from goal kicking, today was very good. The last few wins have been pretty ugly, grounded out wins. What happened to the team who beat GWS?

I think we're going pretty good
What's killing us is goal kicking
At times we are working our arse's off for little reward .
1.5 and 2.6 in the first and third tonight gave freo a chance.
If we can improve this anything is possible this year .

Currently our ball use and decision making allows us to have around 30 shots on goaljaxons wrote:We do lots right but our ball use and decision making is the worse in the competition.
More specifically we are averaging close to 27 shots on goal per match this season which places us 4th - this does not included oof stats
If our ball use and decision making is the worst in the league then watch out once we get it right

100% agree: apart from our horror games against the Swans and Dogs, our ball use has been pretty good: if it hadn't been, then we wouldn't have been able to miss so many gettable shots on goal.Devilhead wrote:Currently our ball use and decision making allows us to have around 30 shots on goaljaxons wrote:We do lots right but our ball use and decision making is the worse in the competition.

Some on here complain about us bombing it to the goal square. I have seen Mav and Newnes do this a bit, but, in general, I don't think we do this significantly more than other clubs. Indeed, we seem to take more turnover marks in defence then our opponents.

Re: We're still going ok
We're going ok. The scope for improvement is through the roof at years end if we can attract a couple, select the correct team, and find a way to increase our horrid efficiency in the forward line. Whether that will happen, the duries out....

Re: We're still going ok
Good thread. We are going ok. We're generally pretty hard to play against, with 3 exceptions this season (Syd, WB, Ade). We're generally pretty good at contested stuff. But we remain pretty bad when we have the ball.
My beef with this side of our play is that it hasn't improved the whole season. So, we're going ok but as ok as we were going in round 2. I find it frustrating that we have problems which have not been improved. I don't think I expect prime Hawthorn-like play from us, but at least improvement.
I see these as persistent:
- All the forwards lead to the same spot and then all jump at it.
- Similar with defenders...too many up
- Similar with contested ball...too many in, so tha handball out to space isn't there, so the next kick isn't great
- Giving the ball by hand to someone in a bad position, under the pump, running in the wrong direction/on the wrong side. Missing handballs.
- Kick-ins. We suck at bringing the ball in from a kick-in. It is so rare that we get an inside 50 from the same chain as the kick-in.
- Kick-ins. We don't defend well when the opposition kicks the ball in. I don't have stats on this so maybe I'm being emotional and remembering the bad ones.
- And the thing I hate most. We have the ball around half back and all the players are just standing still. The stationary set-up is so easy to defend - far too few work hard to make space and draw defenders, so we're stuck.
We've won three in a row now which we absolutely should have won. So that's a pass mark and some of these flaws have been hidden or mitigated against poorer opponents.
Huge test for the next month and indeed the rest of the season. I want to see the performance we put in against GWS or Hawthorn become the standard, not the exception. Fact is, we have a couple of games which were clearly our best performances and that shouldn't be the case....they should all be closer to those.
We have lots of room for improvement and have had all year. We've been going ok all year but the same ok.

Nobody could fault the effort shown at Subiaco. The "execution of skills" however? Hmmmmmm? Plenty of room for improvement. BUT as I've said in other posts; we are making improvements, albeit at a pace slower than we'd have liked.

Re: We're still going ok
Our goal kicking is a disgrace.
Quite seriously we would be at least one win better off and our percentage would be twenty percent better.
Doing my head in. We wont go anywhere kicking at 45%.

Re: We're still going ok
We have beaten the teams we are supposed to win against for one exception (GWS) but lost to the teams above us...
That tells me our attitude and effort is strong as we don't lose to teams we are better than but it also tells me unless we start beating sides above us we won't play finals...
Where is the improvement going to come from?
The good thing is players down on form don't play games in this team...
AR has put this into place this year as he has evolved from development coach to a results driven coach this year.
Play a poor game at your own peril...You will be at Trevor Barker Oval before you know it..
There are some handy players smashing the door down to play..
Freeman, Acres,Marshall, Hickey, Savage, Rice and Long etc
Mc Cartin is our greatest asset not playing currently.
Where is the improvement going to come from?
Goal kicking accuracy is the main one...
Do nothing else but kick straighter and we will win more than we lose..
Easier said than done...
We will know more in the next two weeks....

We'll certainly get the chance to improve that record in the next couple of months. Hopefully our chance to clip Adelaide comes in September.Beno88 wrote:In the last 12 months we've beaten all but four teams.
