North are eyeing off our "big fish"
Looks like we have some very strong competition to land a big fish at the end of the season. North are making offers to Josh Kelly and Dustin Martin.
I'm surprised we're not more on the front foot with this given this has been the long term plan.

Do not want!
Maybe North going after Martin is in response to Kelly knocking them back and wanting to come to us!

Oooh I hope so. I do like the idea of getting a free agent though. Salary cap cost, but zero draft position cost.whiskers3614 wrote:Do not want!

What about the psychological cost of another pea-brained bogan on our list?saint-stu wrote:Oooh I hope so. I do like the idea of getting a free agent though. Salary cap cost, but zero draft position cost.whiskers3614 wrote:Do not want!

How do you know that the Saints are not?saint-stu wrote:

I would have thought that negotiating through the media was not the best way to go about doing things.
You can be sure whichever players that the Saints are targeting that they will be in discussion with that player, or players, managers.

It's interesting. Trout goes on about "character" when speaking about draft prospects, but it seems we went against that with our recent recruit. He has been the source of two controversies already. Pros probably outweigh the cons all the same. But I wonder how many you can take before you develop a bad culture?whiskers3614 wrote:What about the psychological cost of another pea-brained bogan on our list?saint-stu wrote:Oooh I hope so. On the other hand, Michael Gardiner hardly put a foot wrong when he came over and was outstanding for a few years.

Not sure that bringing in another known idiot would enhance the prospects of the one (at least) already on our books!

As long as we don't get another player from the dopers then I'll be happy. They're nothing but trouble, I tells ya!
As ex-president Peter Summers said:
“If we are going to be a contender, we may as well plan to win the bloody thing.”
St Kilda - At least we have a Crest!

We've got the opportunity to be considered and shrewd about just who we recruit for 2018. We should take that opportunity, and practice a very considered approach to available Free Agents.

Can't believe people are turning their noses up to Dusty. I'd take him in a heartbeat. He's exactly the type of player we need.

Dusty won't leave Richmond. They simply can't let a champion like that go. Won't happen.Sainternist wrote:Can't believe people are turning their noses up to Dusty. I'd take him in a heartbeat. He's exactly the type of player we need.

Re: North are eyeing off our "big fish"
If you want a player you only need to talk to his player agent.
Make it known that you are interested and if the player is interested you will make a bid.
Making offers publicly does nothing to help your chances only hinders them by creating unwanted tensions for the player in question with his existing club and team mates.
The player does not appreciate it.
However if your club is under pressure to land a big fish and you realise that you are unlikely to get anyone you have to make a noise.
That is what North is doing.
You have to make public that you offered $9 million over 9 years to Kelly
You have to make public that you offered over $5 million over 5 years to Dustin Martin.
You let your supporters and other clubs know what you are offering.
You have to do so to placate supporters who are angry because instead of being contenders for a premiership you are contenders for the wooden spoon.
You know that you wont be able to land a big fish because the fish wants to play finals footy and hopefully win premierships.
Norf have the added problem that every player saw how they terminated the playing careers of footballers like Dal Santo who were still playing good football just as an excuse for the failings of their coach.
Hopefully St Kilda is talking to player agents and keeping their mouths shut.

Pretty much tells us that Kelly is doing one of two things, staying put or coming to the Saints, let's hope it's the second option!!!!!

Correct. It is just Caro, a Richmond supporter being Caro. She is pissed off with Martin's manager.saintsRrising wrote:How do you know that the Saints are not?saint-stu wrote:
