Even the peripheral officials couldn't wait to pull down our pants and give it to us.
1. The Mav Weller score review. I actually believe that the ball was probably touched but there had to be conclusive evidence that it was touched and there wasn't
2. In the 3rd quarter we were running the ball out of the back pocket close to the boundary. The boundary ump was only a couple of metres away, unobstructed, and in perfect position. The goal ump who WAS obstructed, through out his arm and the field ump called a ball in.

There is no right answer. It depends on the game. Simple. 28-0? In a professional sport? As Daryl Kerrigan would say,"Tell him he's dreamin'".Johnny Member wrote:So what should the free kick count be?White Winmar wrote:Really? Another great call was the bounce in the center that went directly to Vardy who just belted it forward giving us no chance and they goaled. 99.9% of the time that is called back but this time it wasnt.Selhurst Saint wrote:Even the peripheral officials couldn't wait to pull down our pants and give it to us.

So why the 28-0 comment? Ridiculous and hyperbolic. It detracts from the original argument which is sound. Re: Saints fans fuming over free kick count
I agree that 28-0 'could' be an acceptable free kick count and the game still umpired correctly - highly unlikely, but still possible.White Winmar wrote:So why the 28-0 comment? The point that was being made is it is not the number of frees given, it is the consistency of interpretation. If say next week the Brions come out and decide the only way to stop us is to scrag every player - the count may be 23 - 8 in our favour and entirely justifiable, however in Saturdays game there were multiple interpretations of similar acts resulting in differing outcomes
I believe that the game was poorly umpired - I believe that most of the 28 frees were there - I also believe that there were far more than 8 frees to us in 120 minutes of football - essentially that is one per 15 minutes of playing time!!!!!
I do not want to see the game over officiated and everything that can be paid being paid - but I want to see a level playing field - this is my dream! If that results in a 23-8 free kick count then so be it - but under no circumstances am I deluded in thinking the umpiring had no bearing on the outcome of this game - even at 7-0 the players must have been wondering.
13-19 - Variable 1 (our fault)
23-8 - Variable 2 (not our fault)
I believe that if either of these factors were changed we would have won - but as it stands - bring on the Brions!

Re: Saints fans fuming over free kick count
I am not saying that the 23 free kicks to West Coast weren't there, it is the ones that are not paid which has me fuming.
Here is a stat from round 2
GWS V GC - GWS 102 point win.
GWS 17 frees for - GC 24 frees for
Port v Freo - Port 89 point win
Port 21 frees for - Freo 18 frees for.
So the Saints were no deserving of a better run of umpiring ..... freaking spare me. Absolutely rogered.

Re: Saints fans fuming over free kick count
Just want to raise the Mav "goal"again.
I agree from the front on and side on shots that the defender's fingers got extremely close to the ball.
But I didn't see any movement in his fingers.
Yet the review umpire turned the onus the other way round and called it a point.
That is like a DRS review with snicko not working and no visual change in direction of the ball, giving a batsmen out purely on the basis that the ball looked very very close to the bat.
Surely that is wrong?!!!
To make matters worse WCE from the "point" ran the ball the length of the ground for a goal.

When there is no definite evidence of the ball being touched the goal umpires decision should stand -he signalled a goal.

Re: Saints fans fuming over free kick count
I think one of the commentators said that the video review umpires have more vision that what they show on the tv. Not sure if thats true or not but might explain it as surely they couldn't have overturned the umps decision based on what we saw - there was nothing definitive.longtimesaint wrote:And the goal they got was from a dubious free!Enrico_Misso wrote:Just want to raise the Mav "goal"again.

It just beggars belief. It proves that the umps are unskilled, pure and simple.

Re: Saints fans fuming over free kick count
Just to throw the cat amongst the wigeons here - I am the first to admit that we benefitted from a goal that Bruce kicked that bounced of a West Coast players face, however, the umpires have reviewed the game, right, and all decisions were correct, right?????
I am at a loss - we need the umpires board to say that the review was conducted and:
23 WC frees - 22 were correct
8 STK frees - 6 were correct
10 WC frees missed
12 STK frees missed
Admission of being less than perfect is not a crime, denying there is a problem is an issue.

If you want to go down that path, why don't you be real about it and review the free kick count at all WCE home games for the past five or ten seasons and tell us all what percentage of the time WCE "win" the free kick count - and then tell us all the statistical probability of that occurrence?
The point is that it is not just that we were reamed in this game by the umpires, the point is that there is an ongoing and systemic bias in the umpiring at ALL Eagles home games and it has been occurring for years....it's just that this time around it was comically bad.......

Umpires should be wired up so every time they get it wrong they should receive an electric shock. Watch the standard improve.
