Remembering Jody Arnol
Who remembers this enigmatic Tasmanian lad from the 1990-91 seasons?
He had a bit of a cult following. Quite a burly looking chap, with his Bon Scott Acca-Dacca look. Played as many as 13 games with us, under the guidance of Kenny Sheldon. Kicked half a dozen goals, too. I remember seeing him have a real crack against Melbourne at the MCG. Kicked a couple of fine goals and had some real presence around half-forward.
More information, photographs or perhaps even video footage of Jody would be much appreciated.
Cheers!

Re: Remembering Jody Arnol
I remember Jody, unfortunately.
Pick 3 in the1989 National Draft.
Anthony Banik was #1
Matthew Croft was #2
Peter Matera was the pick after Jody.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Remembering the selectors that used pick 3 on him!

I remember Jody. I was thinking about him a day or two ago. My dad got frustrated at him at Moorabbin and I said "it's hard" (playing at that level).
Did West Coast hide Matera from view or something so nobody else would pick him?

Re: Remembering Jody Arnol
I have two memories. One was the game against the Dees at the G where he looked like a star. Another was a game at Moorabbin where the ball bounced off his chest about 5 times in the first ten minutes before he was dragged.
Imagine having Peter Matera on one wing and Nicky Winmar on the other! I think I'm going to cry.

Re: Remembering Jody Arnol
Clubs clearly hadn't mastered drafting at this stage.
Gavin Wangeneen = pick #12
Wayne Campbell = pick #29
Shaun Hart = pick #33
Paul Williams = pick # 70
Brett Heady = pick #92
Ashley McIntosh = pick #112.
Why didn't we draft McIntosh, we had the family connection..

John McIntosh played 51 senior games so Ashley would have qualified under the father-son rule which was 50 games back then.Wayne42 wrote:Clubs clearly hadn't mastered drafting at this stage.

Look on th bright side, we probably would have traded him.

We should have had McIntosh under the father-son rule and would have had him the year before.Trev from the Bush wrote:John McIntosh played 51 senior games so Ashley would have qualified under the father-son rule which was 50 games back then.Wayne42 wrote:Clubs clearly hadn't mastered drafting at this stage.

But the AFL in their "wisdom" or should i say their desire to prop up their new fangled expansion club changed the rule that year to allow the Eagles to pick him up.

He had a tattoo before they were fashionable. He also had long, curly red hair in a mullet, before it was fashionable. Scrap that last one. Curly red hair wasn't ever fashionable and never will be. Possibly our worst draft ever. Quirk anyone?

Re: Remembering Jody Arnol
I went looking for him on YouTube. I found this Melbourne game where he's playing down back. The commentary at the start talks about him holding on to the ball for too long.
This is worth looking at for one of the best kicks of a footy I've ever seen missing the easiest shot you'll ever see at about 12 minutes.

Re: Remembering Jody Arnol
I should have watched a bit more. This was the game where he kicked three. Thrown forward for the last 10 minutes. Good hands and a good kick.
And here's a picture that shows why we were so great in 1990.
Krakouer, Arnol and Nixon!

Re: Remembering Jody Arnol
I remember that Melbourne game I was there, kicked one from a tight angle on the Punt Road end.
That's all he did, that draft I recall an indigenous ruckman too who didn't last long.
It was hit and miss back then, knowing we could have picked Peter Matera doesn't make the memory of Jodi Arnol much to smile about.

Re: Remembering Jody Arnol
The Eagles were a WA state team minus Nick Winmar.
The AFL set them up GWS style.
They hid the premium talent like Heady, Kemp etc and took them with late draft picks.
Matera's were different as the family were well known as gun WA players, if you drafted them they would have refused to come.
We were never getting McIntosh as the AFL allowed WA service F & S and young McIntosh didn't want to move.
Didn't help that his dad was reportedly unhappy at his treatment by saints after his injury.

Re: Remembering Jody Arnol
He was a reasonably formidable looking bloke, wasn't he? But his parents chose to name him Jody. It was at that very moment, any chance of growing up to work in the "tough guy business" went out the window. I'd always thought his first name was spelt, Jodi. I have a new found respect for him. If it have been spelt Jodi, with a little heart shape for a tittle, I would've wiped him completely.Sainternist wrote:Who remembers this enigmatic Tasmanian lad from the 1990-91 seasons?

Re: Remembering Jody Arnol
You reckon picking Jody at pick 3 was bad. AT least he played 13 games.
Our first 8 picks in the draft never played one game for us.
1986
picks 2, 15, 28, 41 & 54. Zilch..no games from any of them
1987
picks 5, 18 ,31 , 44 & 57,.
Bob Jones at 44 and Damian Kitsche were the last two picks referred to above that year and played 20 and 29 games respectively.
In 1988 we had the first draft pick and stupidly traded it to the hawks.
In 1990 a we gave away all our early draft picks and the first pick was at pick 72..Brian Wilson a nd in 1991 our first 5 picks never played for the saints. Picks were 12, 53, 61, 72 and 82.
Looking at the guys we traded in in those years reads like a horror story.
Michael Frost at pick 8 in 1993 was another story all in its own.
No wonder we were s*** for all those years.
Whatever it takes to keep Bains is well worth it.

In all fairness, we had Lockett and Loewe, so why would we have drafted McIntosh? Wangeneen is another matter.Wayne42 wrote:Clubs clearly hadn't mastered drafting at this stage.

And was handy in the ruck as well, BM. I had his number on my back because he worked with my dad. I remember him as a real gentleman. What a tragedy his career was cut short. Would've been one of our best.BigMart wrote:Because McIntosh was a gun, and played as a key defender.
