The Saints are hopeful Leigh Montagna will get up for Round 1 after missing the pre-season series with a calf strain.
An intra-club game on Friday and a Sandringham VFL practice match against Werribee on Saturday are options to give the veteran some match fitness before the showdown against Melbourne.
Otherwise, the Saints are in excellent shape on the injury front.
Mav Weller finished last night’s narrow loss to Sydney with ice on his leg after a corkie and Koby Stevens didn’t take his place in the team after eating what Alan Richardson described as “a bad prawn”.
Nathan Freeman is still in the wilderness while key defender Hugh Goddard (leg) won’t be seen for a while.
a list given last week had 2 or 3 on it.
the only team with less was hawks

Still plenty of time if he's good enough
Can't you only have 3 years on the rookie list or something? The clock starts ticking if you can't put yourself in line for senior selection by your second year. I would have liked to see him tried last year for a game or two but Richo was playing safe not even wanting to play Lee who was playing well in the VFL. Now Brown and Goddard and maybe even Dempster would be ahead of him in that key back role.

Expect the rookie list to be gone as part of the new CBA - neither the AFL or the AFLPA see any use in keeping it, it's just a legacy from when the reserves system was in place.
I'd expect the players on the rookie list will automatically change over to an extended senior list, not sure how this will affect Category B players though.

Armo also out-groin pulled late in 1st qu from what I noted

These injuries Armo seems to be battling for seasons now - back & groin - are a real worry. Would explain why he was so down last week. I can't see him getting back to 2015 form at this rate if his body keeps failing. If he's constantly battling with injury he's going to find it a real battle to keep his spot. But he's one of our true inside beasts who can win clearances and has the physicality to be a genuine force inside. Dunny - you are being asked to step up pal as there could be an ongoing spot for a genuine inside monster if you can pull it off.
Just saw an article stating that Roo feels he'll Ben out for 6 weeks. So I'm guessing that time frame should be 4-6 weeks. Just means it's time for Big Paddy and the forward line to step up. Sneaky good chance for acres
To cement a spot for himself.
David Armitage Groin Test
Nick Coughlan Foot 3 weeks
Sean Dempster TBC TBC
Huge Goddard Achilles 1 week
Ben Long Suspended Round three
Nick Riewoldt Knee Test
Jack Steven Punctured lung TBC
Updated: Tuesday, April 4
Early prognosis
Nick Riewoldt is unlikely to face the Brisbane Lions on Sunday but if he responds well to an increased training load, a return isn't out of the question. However, he could be on the sidelines for a few more weeks yet. Jack Steven will miss at least a week after a punctured lung versus West Coast and David Armitage's groin will be tested. - Dinny Navaratnam

No mention of the elephant in the room.
VFL was mentioned so if he was available, his name would be mentioned.

Longer copped a knock, should be fine
Roo's ankle fine after strapping, expected to be fine
Josh Battle hurt knee yesterday in VFL, expect bruising, didn't play second half, unsure of severity
Saints GM Football Performance Jamie Cox confirmed the news on Tuesday after Senior Coach Alan Richardson indicated that Armitage would head down this path last week.
“Unfortunately for Dave Armitage he has had to undergo an adductor release surgery to correct his injury,” Cox told saints.com.au on Tuesday afternoon.
“Dave won’t run for a couple of weeks and is expected to miss at least a month.”
Off-season midfield recruit Koby Stevens has recovered well from a head knock in Sandringham’s loss to Richmond on Saturday and will face a fitness test on Thursday.
“Koby copped a knock to his head in the VFL and sat out the second half of the game,” Cox said.
“He has pulled up well from the knock, but will need to prove his fitness on Thursday before being declared fit for the weekend.”
St Kilda’s second pick in last November’s National Draft, Josh Battle, is set to miss the next fortnight with bone bruising in his knee following a collision in the VFL on the weekend.
“Josh’s knee is structurally sound but he has suffered some bone bruising and is set to miss a couple of weeks,” Cox said.
Injury List 25/4/17
David Armitage (groin) 4 weeks
Koby Stevens (concussion) test
Josh Battle (bone bruising) 2 weeks
Nick Coughlan (foot stress fracture) available
