According to ...Saints won't make the 8...
Not sure if this was posted previously, but is an interesting read, particularly considering our start to the year, and in light of injuries in the first two rounds.

I cant see how we can make it. Already two games behind Richmond Demons and Port who have been around our mark the last two years.

I'm not convinced we won't make it, but will be difficult, but the article certainly highlighted the challenges that we face this year.Con Gorozidis wrote:I cant see how we can make it. Already two games behind Richmond Demons and Port who have been around our mark the last two years.

Sadly for us, all those teams mentioned show obvious improvement in their team play and systems, plus look balanced across the field with their young guys making big contributions. We seem to have taken one step back so far and no player is really stepping up. Where to from here?Con Gorozidis wrote:I cant see how we can make it. How do you work out the one step backwards? We lost to the Eagles by over 100 last season and we should have won Saturday.spert wrote:Sadly for us, all those teams mentioned show obvious improvement in their team play and systems, plus look balanced across the field with their young guys making big contributions. We're the cooda-beens Curly. We didn't win and got beaten in most of the team stats bar a couple. For a team that was supposed to be taking the next step this season, we look like we have gone back two seasons in quality. And don't forget that last year, quite a few tipsters gave us a chance against the WCE, so it wasn't like we went over with no confidence.

Gee folks are hard on a great performance that ultimately fell short due to poor conversion and one sided umpiring. if either had been more even we would have likely held them off at the end, or broken them and gone on with it. Sure poor conversion is poor football - but don't let it completely cloud that performance - most of us expected to get well beaten.
The Melbourne game - it happens - teams put in a stinker occasionally. That was far more disappointing.

'Two games down, 20 to go. Of course it's too early to be making sweeping judgments about how various teams will end up this season. But you can't ignore the danger signs. Or history. Which for those still to break their duck in 2017, is alarming indeed.
Since 2008, 45 teams have gone 0-2. One of them, yes, just one, has gone on to be part of that September. That was Sydney, which not only overcame two losses to open 2014, but finished on top of the ladder and lost a grand final to Hawthorn."

I'm not convinced that we can't make it either, but a poor start (Rd 1 loss) and a tougher draw certainly doesn't help.
But it's pretty simple really. If we don't make it we are either not ready or not good enough.
In that sense the ladder does not lie.

Finally some sense - If we make - we deserve to - if not - we get a better pick - TBH - at this point I do not believe we have the cattle, or the system to win 2017 Premiership - so I would rather work on that than win games by the skin of our teeth.bigcarl wrote:And the drug cheats are back after serving their time.Con Gorozidis wrote:I cant see how we can make it. If we don't make it and the Hawks don't make it we will at least have two top ten picks this year.

Only the seriously deluded thought we were a flag chance this year.
This year is about trying to make the eight. If we win a final that would be massive.

No, it's certainly not. If we don't win our next two games, I think it's almost certain we won't be playing finals footy.saynta wrote:http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/r ... vc1ly.html

Terrific article. A very objective analysis. We are now be hind the 8 ball and our draw doesn't help, but that shouldn't blind us to the talent in this team. It is considerable and developing. Add a FA and two first rounders and we are good to go. Patience grasshoppers. Patience. Build it and they will come and Ameet and trout are building it.
I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!

Re: Saints won't make the 8...
An excellent and insightful article.
I agree with him on Fyfe, at this stage Dustin Martin is far better and there are possibly a few jets at GWS that meet our needs.
I disagree with him regarding not playing finals. Although it is far from a formality, I think we'll get there, but I agree its not a huge issue in building for a tilt at the Premiership. However, exposing our list to finals footy would be beneficial.
With the evenness of the competition, if you get to the finals healthy and in form, who knows? Nth Melb & Hawthorn won't play finals, Geelong I think are also shaky. They will be replaced by 2 or 3 teams and aside from us, Port & Melbourne, I see no other contenders (Essendon are a big maybe).

Re: Saints won't make the 8...
What a pack of candy glass doomsayers we have here on this site - 2 rounds in and our season is kaput
Buckland fails to take into account the drop off of some other teams that made the 8 last year
Win the next 2 and we are 2 and 2 with a % over 100 and thick in the middle of it
There was another article assessing the chances of a teams making the 8 after losing the first 2 games of the season - conveniently though the writer only went back as far as 2008 and found that Carlton & Sydney were the only team to do it in the last 10 years
Lets have another look - so Final 8 first happened in 1994 (15 teams in league) - the following season saw 16 teams
Teams that lost there first two games (from 1994 to 2007) but made the 8
1994 - Carlton finished 2nd
1995 - none
1996 - Sydney (1st)
1997 - St Kilda (1st), Sydney (6th), Port (missed out on %) - we lost 4 of the first 5 as well
1998 - None
1999 - Kangas (2nd), Sydney (8th)
2000 - Kangas (4th), Hawks (8th)
2001 - Adelaide (8th)
2002 - Port (1st), Geelong & Hawks (missed out on %)
2003 - Port (1st)
2004 - Geelong (4th), Essendon (8th)
2005 - None
2006 - Sydney (4th), Melbourne (7th)
2007 - Kangas (4th)
Well that looks a little different from the cosy selected time period of 2008 to 2016
Sure there were quite a few teams that started 0-2 and didn't make the 8 but this just shows you that it is very possible to turn a season around after a poor start
Now man up you negative fairy floss noobs and get behind the team

And because he had us penciled in for a bottom 6 finish ........... well then of course we obviously must have over performed .... because Bucko's ladder is always right
