Can't say too much but it is a smokescreen.
Won't elaborate further so please don't ask.
I'll take that as Kelly is coming then.
Or maybe Fyfe.

Fyfe has signed with Freo, will be announced sometime this year.
Kelly will be fine then.

Of course we are looking into him, I'm sure we are looking into most players we deem worth the pick value we are willing to give up. If we put all eggs in one basket we will probably be waiting yet another year

Hes' in his peak and we want to maximise our flag chances with him (while still feeding strong young blood in to keep us up for a while - tricky balancing act). Whitfield is the perfect age/experience to give us that class outside run and skill in our midfield we are missing right from the get go next year and could conceivably push us into top 4 contention if others come on too. Juicy prospect
he's not 26 until october; we've got another year up our sleeves
There is a perception I agree that we will have a stronger midfield this year and my question is--
If we draft say a no.5 best mid available, how long until he is playing consistant footy on a week in week out basis?
Will he get a go straight up?
Young players get early opportunities in crap sides but we may be a bit better.
We need to target players like Whitfield etc who can improve us day one.

According to that logic we are either:
a) already top 4, or
b) you should never recruit young players because 'they take too long.'
If we are top 4 this year - then sure get an older player. But if not then we are delusional if we think topping up is the way to go.
Young players can have an impact immediately. Look at Isaac Heeney, Callum Mills, Caleb Daniel, Toby McLean, Josh Dunkley in the last few years.

Well I think it is pretty fare to say that if you are into a gun player that it needs to be commenced seriously a year or more out.
Waiting to near seasons end, or post season, may work for the lesser likes but guns will need to have been in serious talks for a while. The player will want the best deal, and the club (in this case the Saints) will not want to set aside the best part of a $million plus or minus a bit only to have it not used.
So if the Saints are to be of any hope landing a gun for 2018 it will be as Holmes would say, "The game is afoot"

Flying the World in comfort thanks to FF Points....
I don't think we are top 4, much the same as last year maybe stronger and more consistant.
Obviously depends on the player but I am actually asking "if we draft a early mid will they get much early opportunity?"
Seemed Armo and Jack S took a while to get a gig.
I think of recruiting a pretty good 21/22 year old as not topping up, Gary Ablett would be topping up

You are correct, we are well underway in discussions for this years trade period.

I hope we make use of this great opportunity and get a player for now and a couple of players for the future.
FA is good I agree.
But most good players end up signing with their current club.

Be cautious though.
Often these 'discussions' are simply a way for a player manager to up his players contract with his current club.
Wouldnt be the first time this strategy is adopted.
This is the beauty of Bains' strategy. We are in a win:win:win this year. We have so much draft power that we can change or optimise our strategy to suit ourselves as events unfold.
Bloody love it.

You should of asked jax how many players are we talking to over the next 12 months.

I think jaxons has been smokescreened himself.
Fyfe for $1.5m is the best bet. Kelly is staying put at gws.
I'm here in the real world, Fyfe has signed at Freo.....fact.

Yeah. That was reported on line in WA a couple of days ago.
It was no secret.
Anyway, nothing wrong with the kids we have got.
Those posters hanging out for the great white hope are kidding themselves.
I didnt see the part where he said it was a secret. But you said we're going after Fyfe, so are you in that list?
Yeah weve got some great kids, but so do the bulldogs, the swans GWS etc. One thing is for sure is that every club will be trying to improve their list. If were not trying to recruit A graders were the only club that isn't. Given our position on the ladder we can't just rely on luck in the draft, we have to look at out of contacted players, FA's and the draft where we can best get an edge on all the other clubs.
If a Kelly or Shiel is available to us we go for it, Its not a great white hope, its something we need to do. A lot of our list is potential, theres no guarantees with potential
