Re: Former Saint not in the best health
I can remember Out at Waverley in 1973 Elimination final when we belted the suitcase out of Essendon and George Young was unstoppable that day, kicked 6 and set up a few, definitely one of the finest finals performances by a Saint in my many years of watching, a genuine match winner.

Re: Former Saint not in the best health
Those pantsings of The Dons at the park led by George were absolutely magic.
And he was playing in a half forward flanker role.

Re: Former Saint not in the best health
1973 Elimination Final v Essendon; I'll never forget the game especially as I got a lift to the match and sat with Essendon supporters. They left at 3/4 time, I stayede and caught bus, 2 trains another bus and a long walk to get home around 9:30.
George had 29 disposals, 23 kicks, 14 marks and 6 goals from the flank.
I truly hope to see another Saint turn in a finals performance of that calibre soon, but I could be waiting another lifetime. Best Final by a Saint ever in my opinion.
By the way, anybody knw what is wrong with Georgie? He was the Eagles runner for many years when they joined the VFL.

Re: Former Saint not in the best health
Speaking of former Saints "not in the best of health", it is very sad to see that Colin Antonie passed away earlier in the week at the age of 64. Colin played 17 games from 1969 to 1971 aand was still just a kid. It was a pretty tough period to be trying to make a name for yourself with the Saints then.
RIP Colin.
RIP Colin.

Re: Former Saint not in the best health
Sorry guys but I doubt anyone who saw George play could liken him to Billings.
George was probably 187cm in a time when that was KPP height and rucks were 193-195cm.
George was a great one on one contested mark and on the lead played FF or Tall HFF with a racking deadly left foot.
Billings is a small outside mid/forward.
Being left footers is about the only remote similarity.

Sorry JB but Billings is also a very good one on one contested mark and has a raking left foot (kicked a couple outside 50m last year)Joffa Burns wrote: Sorry guys but I doubt anyone who saw George play could liken him to Billings.

He is also listed as 184cm (6ft 1) - 1cm shorter than George who is listed at 185cm - don't know how that is small - medium but not small
Didnt realise that George was born in Caulfield as well - Victorian born

Re: Former Saint not in the best health
Well if Billings turns out to be as skillful as St George then we will be very very fortunate.

Sorry guys if I come off as testy here, but George was a big favorite of mine and I stand by the comment anyone who compares Billings to George Young has never seen Young play.Devilhead wrote:Sorry JB but Billings is also a very good one on one contested mark and has a raking left foot (kicked a couple outside 50m last year)Joffa Burns wrote: Sorry guys but I doubt anyone who saw George play could liken him to Billings.

Secondly the height comparison 184 to 186cm is not remotely relevant given the 40 year gap in which they played. Big Nick was 191cm, how would he go against Sandilands in a ruck contest?
George played in the early 70’s and at 186 was a very tall flanker or a mid to slightly short KPP.
In our 73 finals team V Essendon we had Jeff Sarau in ruck 191cm, Alan Davis at FF 180cm, Barry Lawrence at FB 183cm, the big cowboy who stood a towering 189cm and tall wingman Johnny Manzie at 179cm. The tallest player on the day for the saints was ruckman Bryan Mynott at 193cm.
Bryan Mynott was not as tall as Carlton onballer Patrick Cripps.
George Young was a great one on one marking player, a great kick for goal and brilliant on the lead. He could turn a player inside out as many left footers did in that period but for such a skilful player was not overly competent on his right foot.
Billings is a talented outside mid who is yet to hit his potential, he is not a marking forward target and nor is he a contested one on one marking specialist.
The comparison is not remotely similar in my humbled but first hand memory/opinion.

I too saw George young play just about everyone of his games with the saints - had his poster on my wall. my comparison with Billings was only on the basis that they are / were both graceful left footers- George was much bigger than Jack is and George played tall - which is why he was actually a great success as a key forward for us. I compared young Jack to George Young because I believe - like George - he can turn a game on its head with his left foot and his kicking technique looks very similar to George.
NO disrespect was meant to either player - George Young was a freak - an absolutely brilliant footballer and one player I would pay money to go and watch every week. Jack billings could become that type of player - but a long way to go.

Re: Former Saint not in the best health
George Young was a true cult figure. Remember the chants of, "Georgie, Georgie", that rang around Moorabbin when he was on song? 10 in a losing side against Fitzroy at Moorabbin (IIRC) and 8 in the shootout with Carman in 1975. The boy could play a bit, that's for sure.
"Is this the right room for an argument?"
"I told you once."
"No, you didn't."
"Yes, I did."
"Listen, an argument isn't just the automatic gainsaying of anything the other person says, it's a series of statements designed to support a particular conclusion."
"No, it isn't."
"Oh, I've had enough of this."
"No you haven't"
"Oh shut up."

Re: Former Saint not in the best health
I was at a game at Moorabbin, where I witnessed him lose his cool - and it was probably the only time this ever happened with him.
But anyway, Terry Wheeler, in general play, either recklessly or deliberately hit George Young high - maybe in the first quarter of that game. Early in the game, anyway.
George was left holding his face and didn’t do anything at the time. He probably thought: “you’ll keep”.
In the last quarter, or towards the end of the game, he lunged to “mark” a high ball - and caught Wheeler forcefully with a swung elbow to the face.
It certainly rocked him, but Wheeler, to his credit, just took it on the chin, literally - and probably realised he had it coming.
It was well disguised - there was no free kick.
