Re: What's Jake up to ?
His body will be over any niggling soreness and that hip injury he had. He'll need to play all of the practice games in February and March to be conditioned you'd think. He should have an immediate impact on our performances. I'm really over all of the hidings we've been getting since 2013. A key position centre half back is going to make an almighty difference there.
Your friendly neighbourhood samurai.

St Kilda defender Jake Carlisle believes he can become the best centre half-back in the AFL

JAKE Carlisle believes he can fulfil St Kilda’s demand that he turn into the league’s best centre half-back after an aborted start at his new club.
The 24-year-old has spent the past season recovering from hip surgery and knee tendinitis, believing his time away from footy will help him next year.
He has spent the year connecting with his new teammates away from football, aware he must win back their trust after his off-season Snapchat debacle.
A two-week AFL ban has been served concurrently with his ASADA suspension and Carlisle says he has worked all season to build relationships with St Kilda’s players.
“Everyone makes mistakes. My main aim is to learn and move on from it,’’ he told the Herald Sun.
Jake Carlisle has returned to St Kilda. Picture: Michael Klein.
“I feel like this year it’s helped me to do it. I have contacted a lot of the boys over the season and worked my work schedule and training schedule around them.
“I was catching up with boys frequently whether it was on a day off or the weekends.
“I didn’t want to come into this year feeling like I was a new player again. I had been there for three months and then was cut off and I wanted to be part of the group again.”
Carlisle will only this month again start being paid by St Kilda, which took a hard-line stance after he was banned for nine months for Essendon’s ASADA dramas.
After that ban St Kilda chief executive Matt Finnis demanded he use his time off to become the most mobile and dominant centre half-back in the game.
“I like that he said that because it’s something I can aspire to,’’ Carlisle said.
“I feel like this year has definitely helped that. I have had ongoing knee tendinitis for 4-5 years and I carried a hip for two years.
“But I have got over those niggles now. It will be a long year if I start running now so give me a few more months until I start running.
“But the main thing is if I get my legs going and my glutes nice and strong and build my frame the footy smarts will still be there.
“It’s not just about me being a presence, it’s about us six guys playing in defence at any point in time defending well together.”
Carlisle has lived on his savings and a part-time role in the construction industry, but admitted it would be nice to again be paid for playing football.
“It will be nice to get paid again sooner rather than later, but the guys have saved and done well with that,’’ he said.
“As of this month now we are getting paid which is satisfying but the rest (his compensation issues with Essendon) will work themselves out.
“There is no rush but it would be nice to get it done and I am looking forward to getting paid.”
He said he was hopeful Sam Fisher would be handed a contract to play on, aware he had been forced to play on most of the “monsters” in rival teams this year.

For Jake Carlisle, the disappointment of missing 2016 has spurned the opportunity for improvement.
Less than four months after arriving at Linen House Centre via trade, the Bomber-turned-Saint was given the news he and 16 current AFL players had been dreading. The Court of Arbitration for Sport had upheld WADA’s appeal of the AFL anti-doping tribunal’s Essendon verdict.
Carlisle’s 2016 season was over before it could begin. While the initial news was understandably difficult to process, and an on-field start would have to wait a year, Carlisle decided to use the twelve-month hiatus productively.
Able to return in a training capacity in September, the 25-year-old’s suspension officially ended on Monday. An unfortunate chapter in a promising career was done and a new page ready to be written.
The suspension proved difficult, but productive for Carlisle – allowing him to work on his football craft and pursue opportunities outside AFL football.
“It was very tough,” Carlisle told SAINTS.com.au.
“Obviously early it hit me a bit not playing and waking up every day not going to training, but I found other avenues outside of footy.
“I’ve been working (in construction) and working on football training as well, went away and now that I’m back it’s just really satisfying to get back into it,” he said.

On a club video running at training. Not flat out but 3/4 pace at least.

Montagna said Carlisle had grown up significantly during his year away from the Saints, in which he addressed knee and hip niggles, as well as took up part-time work with a construction company and got to know his new teammates outside of the footy club environment.
“I think I’ve noticed a bit of maturity in him over the last 12 months from when he came to pre-season a year ago,” Montagna told SEN.
“He’s really fitted in with the group really well this time round. He’s training well, he’s a hard worker and he’s just a big unit.”
Carlisle, who has been on a modified training program throughout most of the pre-season, will add much-needed size and versatility to a backline that will be without Sam Fisher for the first time in 13 years.

Re: What's Jake up to ?
Key fwds would not like playing on Jake. He is just as big, just as strong and just as athletic as any of them.
Re: What's Jake up to ?
He's a character - you often see him goofing around on the vids. That isn't a bad thing as its good to have some colour and fun during a grueling season. You don't want all boring white hats. Just hope his body will be 100% for this year.

"He's now in full training and really showing us what we've missed in the past, which is another big body to help look after some of those big monsters up forward," Cox said.ST KILDA defender Jake Carlisle is back in full training after an off-season restricted by recovery from hip surgery, Saints football manager Jamie Cox says.
Carlisle, 25, went under the knife early in 2016 and worked in construction during the year after being banned by the Court of Arbitration for Sport as a member of the 'Essendon 34'.
While St Kilda improved last year and missed finals on percentage only, its defence was an issue, with the team ranked 13th in the competition for points conceded.
Cox told SEN radio on Thursday that Carlisle would improve the side's backline.
