I'm not sure what it proves, but I was quite surprised to see the high rate of player delistings by AFL teams this year:
Adelaide - 3 retired & 4 delisted
Brisbane: 4 & 5
Carlton: 3 & 9
Collingwood: 5 & 3
Essendon: 1 & 10 (not counting the extra players they brought in for those banned)
Fremantle: 1 & 11
Geelong: 2 & 7
Gold Coast: 1 & 8
GWS: 1 & 0
Hawthorn: 0 & 7
Melbourne: 0 & 7
North Melbourne: 3 & 5
Port Adelaide: 1 & 4
Richmond: 2 & 3
St Kilda: 1 & 8
Sydney: 3 & 4
West Coast: 4 & 6
Western Bulldogs: 1 & 3
36 Retired & 104 delisted
Of the 104 delisted only 14 were picked up in the Rookie Draft, mostly by the clubs they were at , leaving 90 to contemplate life after the big league.
Obviously clubs are more than ever of the view that it is better to look for new blood than hope that their 2nd tier players will make the grade, validated by the failure of most of them to find a home elsewhere. In the case of the Saints delistings, neither Murdoch, Saunders, Curren, Lee, Shenton, Delaney and Templeton were able to force their way into the team for any length of time, despite numerous opportunities. Brenton Payne was only ever a rookie.

Re: AFLDelistings 2016
Thanks for those very interesting stats. They serve to show how strong GWS are and will be. Not one of their players was delisted. Aside from the one retiree , they got something for every player they lost or moved on. Every other club moved players on for no return. Every player the Giants have is a valuable asset, so they just keep trading in and out until they have as close as possible to the perfect team. The tragedy of it is that the good folk of Sydney's west have no understanding of how lucky they are.

The way the GWS team was put together is so so much better than the way the Bears were put together. The GWS model is the best one, and the correct one for a start up team.George27 wrote:Thanks for those very interesting stats. They serve to show how strong GWS are and will be. GWS have been so good they now have a talent factory that makes a lot of people bristle.
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

I suppose you could say GWS were "tailor-made" to be a flag contenderWayne42 wrote:The way the GWS team was put together is so so much better than the way the Bears were put together. Re: AFLDelistings 2016
Oh. I think someone picked up a delisted GWS player in the rookie draft
Brisbane in fact.
'Who they drafted: Jake Barrett (GWS), Mitchell Hinge (Glenelg), Oscar McInerney (Casey Scorpions), Blake Grewar (Redland, category B)
Summary: The Lions got a little bit of everything in this draft, with midfield grunt in Barrett, half-back polish in Hinge and a project ruckman in McInerney. Barrett has been in the Giants' system three seasons and played just one senior game, but should get some opportunities in Brisbane. He is also capable of being an effective forward and has starred in the NEAFL. The Lions have been looking for good ball users and Hinge fits that bill with his lovely left-foot kick. He usually plays behind the ball, but is capable of moving into the midfield. McInerney is 203cm and will take more time to develop, but with just Stefan Martin, Archie Smith and Matt Eagles on the list as recognised ruckmen, the club needed to add some depth here.
What the club says: "Jake has an outstanding record in the NEAFL, but like a number of GWS boys, probably hasn't had the opportunity – they've got a lot of depth. We're very optimistic he can come in and play a role. Mitchell continues our push to bring in some boys that can use the ball well, and Oscar is a bit older than the other boys, is very raw, but we're hoping with a couple of years in the system, he can develop. We're very happy." - recruiting manager Stephen Conole "
