Not sold. There's more to ruckwork than getting a tap at the centre.

Re: Jason Holmes
I'm not convinced that this is the right call given it probably will be a the expense of Fisher or Eli. With that said, he was obviously second in the pecking order at the end of the season and he's a big, strong, competent tap ruckman and if injuries hit you'd rather have Holmes going up against the likes of Mumford or Gawn late in the season than relying on Pierce at this stage. Considering he's still so new to the game I'm hoping he's got a fair bit of improvement in him but I'm just not sure he's got the skillset to be anything more than a tap specialist.

Re: Jason Holmes
I'm disappointed in this call given it will mean we will have to delist another instead... feel like we're not going to get much out of Holmes this year vs. other potential delisting prospects. Happy to be proven wrong by the big guy though!

Re: Jason Holmes
I like it.
I think people are way too blasé about the number of rucks on the list which IMO should be 4
You need your primary ruck which is Hickey
You KPP relief Ruck which we don't really have but the spot is occupied by Longer
You have a prospect that could potentially be great in Lewis Pierce
And a "I need somebody that can be competitive in the middle NOW" back up which is Holmes

I absolutely agree 4 is fine. Your right in that none of them are really KPP relief rucks.

Re: Jason Holmes
My suspicion is we wanted to trade Longer out and the only club interested was GWS and Billy said he wanted to stay in Melbourne.
Richmond decided they wanted Toby Nankervis and that was that.

Good on you Homesy.
If you keep developing your game, you might get another year.

Could well be that in 2018 when our midfield is strong and firing that big Johnny comes into
his own and makes his mark. He struggles in our team at the moment but two years time the team
will operate very differently.

From a list management perspective i would have preferred they delisted and either used our last pick and re- draft or brought him back as a rookiesaintspremiers wrote:Could well be that in 2018 when our midfield is strong and firing that big Johnny comes into

Re: Jason Holmes
I think you can only stay a maximum of 2 or 3 years on the rookie list and that is why maybe they have upgraded him.Zed wrote:From a list management perspective i would have preferred they delisted and either used our last pick and re- draft or brought him back as a rookiesaintspremiers wrote:Could well be that in 2018 when our midfield is strong and firing that big Johnny comes into

Re: Jason Holmes
He's a good tap ruckman already, but is clearly no Tom Hickey around the ground. No doubt he's been told to develop that part of his game and I'm glad he'll get the chance to.

Re: Jason Holmes
I am just wondering that if we build a crack mid field and forward structure...would it not be useful to have a ruck man who gives that structure first use of the ball most of the time.....and as a result his contribution around the ground may not be critical/required and if it happens it will be the icing ....bigcarl wrote:He's a good tap ruckman already, but is clearly no Tom Hickey around the ground. There might be the thought that if they give him another a year and he improves they might be able to squeeze a 2nd round pick for him next year

Re: Jason Holmes
You need 4 Rucks on the list, simple as that and that's how the club sees it as well, end of story!!!!!

Re: Jason Holmes
Holmes is probably our best tap ruckman now. He needs to start taking marks. His ground work is good for his size.

Re: Jason Holmes
IF a ruckman is only good for tap work he needs a very big tank and I dont think Holmes has it. With interchange caps we need a good first up ruck (Hickey) and a genuine KPP that can fill in (which isnt Josh Bruce). Maybe Brown can chip in. Disappointed Longer hasnt been able to step into that role.santazzi wrote:I am just wondering that if we build a crack mid field and forward structure...would it not be useful to have a ruck man who gives that structure first use of the ball most of the time.....and as a result his contribution around the ground may not be critical/required and if it happens it will be the icing ....bigcarl wrote:He's a good tap ruckman already, but is clearly no Tom Hickey around the ground. I agree you need four rucks on your list but 3 plus a rookie seems like the best mix if you ask me.

Re: Jason Holmes
Stunned that he was upgraded to the senior list.
Good tap ruckman with nothing to offer around the grounds. Can't really go forward in the AFL like he can in the VFL. He is playing a game foreign to him and it shows at the elite level.
He's a very handy VFL footballer and that in itself is an amazing achievement for him!

Re: Jason Holmes
Well he was preferred to Longer and Pierce for the last rounds in Hickey's absence, so it appears that this is how the club is thinking.santazzi wrote:I am just wondering that if we build a crack mid field and forward structure...would it not be useful to have a ruck man who gives that structure first use of the ball most of the time.....and as a result his contribution around the ground may not be critical/required and if it happens it will be the icing ....bigcarl wrote:He's a good tap ruckman already, but is clearly no Tom Hickey around the ground. Maybe, but why keep him interested rather than, say, Longer?Bernard Shakey wrote:Just to keep him interested!bigcarl wrote:Well he was preferred to Longer and Pierce for the last rounds in Hickey's absence, so it appears that this is how the club is thinking.santazzi wrote:I am just wondering that if we build a crack mid field and forward structure...would it not be useful to have a ruck man who gives that structure first use of the ball most of the time.....and as a result his contribution around the ground may not be critical/required and if it happens it will be the icing ....bigcarl wrote:He's a good tap ruckman already, but is clearly no Tom Hickey around the ground. Perhaps the club does think it is all about first use at the clearances and if Holmes can get a kick that will be a bonus.
We did okay n the games he played, from memory, so they may have a point
