After last night's result Gears is right in contention. He has an immaculate reputation within the club.

Of course, Jack would be acceptable as captain. That is, if we accept the club has forgiven him for his Queenstown and DUI incidents But for me, its Gears. Some of those who demonize him on this site would have had a restless night after the B&F count.

I think a big bearing on who gets the gig will be whether the club is focused on:

- The best captain for 2017 - Suspect this would be Geary
- Or the best long-term captain to take us through the years to hopefully win our next flag -ie appointing someone with the aim that they capatin for 4+ years- Suspect this would say Weller or Steven

I think Geary will be our next skipper and he will be our skipper for our next genuine flag tilt which should start next year!!

I love Gears and have never once on this site said anything less. My only reason for not putting him up is that the club needs a 4/5 year captain not a 1/2 captain.

What I didn't understand during the season was the commentary about our captaincy change. Steven had a great year but every time he had a real good game the comments were "oh gee, he has to be captain after that" this coming from people who have bloody played the game, please tell me they consider more than just talent and on field performance when choosing a captain!

Think they will go with someone who is likely to be around for a bit and not be effected by the heavy label of being captain

Newnes probably ticks all boxes with his age profile, determination and grit, consistency and likability
