I don't agree with this decision. It's all about risk v reward. If another club came to me and said they were prepared to give St Kilda pick 12 or better in a straight for Longer I would do it. With pick 12 we would be able to pick up another elite mid or probably the best tall defender in the draft. We would still have Hickey, Pierce on the main list and I would then upgrade Holmes. I'm sure we could then use our last pick in the draft to pick up a developing ruck. Or we could even pick up a developing ruck in the rookie draft. I just feel that the reward in doing this would outweigh the risk.

If you think anyone would offer pick 12 for Longer you're dreaming.

I reckon it's possible. If they don't then I keep him. But I would certainly look at the possibility that's for sure.

Chitypest has probably never actually seen Longer play as he supports another club..

I thought it was Sherlock.

Just because you have a contract, doesn't mean you can't get traded. Billy's trade value just increased. Smart move by the club if that was part of the thinking. He'd have to agree to go, of course.

Johnny or Sherlock. I suppose it depends on your reading or viewing tastes. For mine it was Sherlock.

Is there no restriction on trading someone within 12 months of signing a contract? I thought there was, but maybe I'm thinking of clubs selling players in the EPL. Or I could just be wrong entirely.

Given the player has to agree to the trade if they're contracted, there is no restriction.

I would be quite surprised if Longer gets traded. He's had a few injuries but from what I see at selection in the VFL he's developing his forward skills.
It's possible that Pierce may overtake him next season and if he does he then he may be tradeable, if he is traded we will recruit another young ruckman.
Me thinks that the clubs plan is to have rucks that can be played as a duo, but only if they can spend a fair amount of time resting forward or going back.

Hickey has surpassed my expectations early, he's just about the best ruckman at playing after the bounce or throw up he's almost another on baller at ground level.

Think Holmes is under the pump as I believe we either have to upgrade him or delist him he's been on the system 3 years?
We may delist him then pick him up again in the draft, (we have done it before) if there is someone we miss out on and we still want him as back up. He is good insurance ....we can carry one pure ruck to cover injuries... Spider going down still haunts me.

I'll take a punt and say that Pierce will continue to develop quicker than expected next season..

Richmond need a ruckman. Trade Longer to the tigers for their second pick (pick 24ish) and their forth pick (pick 60ish). Then we on-trade pick 24, 60 and our own third pick (pick 46ish) to Gold Coast for JOM.

Net Result
St Kilda lose Longer and pick 46.
Richmond lose pick 24 and 60.
Gold Coast lose JOM.

St Kilda gain JOM.
Richmond gain Longer.
Gold Coast gain pick 24, 46 and 60.

Holmes is a better forward than Longer.

Longer is poor in the air... he is very good at crashing his body into Ruck Contests and packs down the line...

Ver old fashion ruckman... without the marking ability

I think offload him before everyone realises he's not that good

Pierce is the surprise... can get a kick

Holmes is a tap ruckman... and is athletic

agree with this, Billy is great in the ruck duel and can lay a big tackle but hardly takes a mark.
I don't reckon he'd be all that quick so what does he offer up forward?
the ruckman need to be able to support the backline in the air and provide a linking target out of defense. plus clunk the odd one in the forward line
Hickey's confidence in the air is growing by the week and his ground level work and decision making by hand and foot is very good (and his tackling is great)
Hickey seems a much more likely part time forward option than Billy

I have it on good authority that GCS will accept nothing less than 2 first rounders, or a first round and quality player for JOM. 24, 46 and 60 for JOM is in Daryl Kerrigan territory. Whoever accepted a deal like that would get the sack, and rightly so.

I wouldn't be too sure about that. How about you check the AFL points system and work out how much they add up to?

Never mind. I just worked it out for myself. It is approximately pick 10. So the question is would GC be happy with pick 10 for JOM?
