Ross Lyon
“I tend to start at the top and whack the best ones, and everyone else falls into line."
Interesting comment. Sounds rigid and it's my way or the highway. Nearly worked but ultimately nearly is not good enough.

Re: Ross Lyon
Yes it was a real hoot when Ball walked to Collingwood for nothing and guided them in the details of our gameplan which they used against us.
I'm still laughing at that one.

The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.
They can even WATCH LIVE FOOTY!

Lyon was asst coach at the swans who won the flag in 2005.magnifisaint wrote:We played a prelim in 2005Con Gorozidis wrote:Cellar dweller. Still living in 2005.
He has been trying to replay that game over and over and over ever since.
He is now a cellar dweller (16th).

Re: Ross Lyon
The Luke Ball thing was a total disaster.
We lost a good, valuable player.
Collingwood gained a very good, incredibly valuable player who provided exactly what they needed to take the next step.
They also gained Max Hudghton as a coach, which didn't help our cause.
The whole episode was the classic '8 point game'! It wasn't just what we lost - it was compounded by what Collingwood gained.

Re: Ross Lyon
Fast forward to 2016 and we're starting to get a better picture of super coach Ross Lyon. What a pathetic effort in Pavlich's 350th.
Let's see how he goes trying to rebuild. Let's see how that win loss ratio stacks up after 4 more years...if he makes it to the end of his current contract
http://www.afl.com.au/news/2016-07-31/f ... dney-swans
It was the Dockers' worst defeat under Ross Lyon. It was their fourth-worst defeat at Domain Stadium but they narrowly avoided some further unwanted records with two late goals. They avoided their lowest score under Lyon and their first 100-point defeat under Lyon. But they were held to just 47 points. It was the fourth time they have been held under 50 points this season.

Re: Ross Lyon
Man they have fallen to a new low after that 90 pt thrashing. Do the player want to play for Ross and his dour style? He's there until 2020 or something isn't he? Rossy needs to not hide these disastrous results but eat the humble pie in front of him and let these humilations change him. Failure is feedback and the feedback is screaming in his ear - does he want to hear it?
Coaches can evolve. Blight after losing grannies with Geelong finally learnt the benefit of embedding a tight defensive approach throughout the team at Adelaide. Thompson famously was almost sacked before he finally realised he needed to empower his team and club employees and listen to them. Ross is a good coach - he's made 3 grannies and should have one at least one but for luck. But he needs to be honest with himself and his flaws and focus on three things:
1) Moving away from the dour, lock down, low score style that the footy world has moved on from. It grinds down his players to a nub and is just depressing for players to play year after year with no joy and spark. Scoring is fun, it creates energy and laughter and bragging and confidence.
2) Develop the kids - in this he has no choice now. And the Freo hierarchy have to say to him - You are going to talk to every single player on the list after selection and explain where they are at and what they need to work on like our Richo does. He needs to humble himself and view these kids not as meat chess pieces but as living humans who have their own desires and dreams and quirks and work with those, not try and crush them.
3) Empower the players and others at the club to use their own creativity and ideas to be more unpredicatable as a team and club and be somewhere players and employees really want to be.
I think Ross could change if he really cops this on the chin. He's a smart guy tactics wise. He needs to sit down in the off-season and come up with new tactics to score and take the game on. He knows the defensive side. Now he needs to be braver than he ever has and open up his closed system in a risk/reward payoff.

Re: Ross Lyon
Lyon has never ever developed a list.
He inherited two premiership lists and we know what happened to them.
He's a dictator who plays favorites and for those not in his inner sanctum, they are never able to play their footy with confidence and freedom.
Freo should be his last gig - BUT I know he has most of the media fooled so will no doubt pick up a 3rd club.

He tried going more attacking early in the season and got smashed in the first ten games. Has reverted to type. I fear Ross is a one trick pony. And the trick is old and tired.
I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!

Re: Ross Lyon
Probably not
Considering he got them further than any other coach has, and he nearly did the same with us... The two most tragic clubs I the game.
This year
Never had the best player in the game
Never had the most important player in their set up
Never had an their AA and best defender
Their captain was injured
Along with many other injuries
Like Essendon he'll be rubbing his hands together for next season
