Re: #14!!!!!
I think even Geary's harshest critics have been humbled by now.
His defensive game is the best it's ever been... He's claiming scalp after scalp, and his disposal is hitting those woeful spots a bit less these days.

Re: #14!!!!!
Last few minutes, he made a huge spoil on a Syringe and prevented a possible goal.
Didn't give away a free. Perfect defence.
And he caught MTW on the wing and ran him over the line. Thrilling stuff and huge heart.

Gears best stuff will never appear in the stats. To sit at ground level yesterday I got full appreciation of his value to the team.
His value is immense.

He's a fantastic player and leader. His kicking is average to very ordinary at times.

Re: #14!!!!!
His spoil late in the last was a match winner. He was amazing.
"...If there has been one recurring theme through this whole shocking mess, it has been the misguided, inflated egos and their ill-judged determination to cling to long-standing old boy friendships. The bad advice that has guided the selfish and culpable James Hird has not only punctuated this saga but symbolised it..."

Re: #14!!!!!
That was a long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. When the evil overlord of the defensive "Lyon Cage" ruled the saints. Gears is so much more now. Two goals and a great contested, saving mark. The boy's getting better each week. Fingers crossed, even the odd clanger seems to have vanished from his game. He's definitely gone up a gear this year?HardSaint wrote:loved those goals
i vaguely recall him bagging a few in another role in another time, a long time ago

great game again.
I noticed when he went for the specky he had a fist ready to punch it away and decided to mark when it was nearly in his hands. good decision by him

Re: #14!!!!!
I was thinking about him on the way to work.
It was a really complete game vs Melbourne wasn't it. He not only beat his opponent but completely punished him for being lazy/unaccountable going the other way.
It reminded that back in the 09 era when he first started that was Jarryn actually quite an attacking player... I remember a game vs Adelaide in rd2 in 09 (in Adelaide) where he turned the tide late with a long bomb goal and started a bit of a roll.
It's a part of his game that disappeared as he became more of a lock down player but geeez I hope he continues like this a little more. His confidence is up and though we know he isn't exactly a dead eye Dick by foot, he certainly appears to have worked on that quite a bit in recent times coz that area of his game is not standing out like it once did.
Is really a pleasure to watch atm

Really hope our 'new' leaders all keep on and on improving and what we're seeing now isn't a symptom of them auditioning for captaincy - makes me favour the gt-style rotation even more. I'd like to see them all keep slotting 'captain's goals' forever!

Re: #14!!!!!
Yeah but this is what Gears needs to do every week - keep the oppo honest by being genuinely attacking. To me if he wants to be in our premiership 22 he can't just do a lock down role. All attackers must defend, all defenders must attack. At every point on the field you need all players to bea able to do both based on the situation. That makes you unpredictable.
It will be a battle for mid size backmen roles with Webster, White, Rice, McKenzie, Savage, Joey, Murdoch all able to do that role. Who will be the best blend of defence and attack? Geary can't keep taking safe kicks and just focusing on his player. It was good he stepped up with Savage out but needs to show this week wasn't a one of or else he'll come under scrutiny again. We need lots of good kicking and creative drive from the back.

"he'll come under scrutiny again."????... From whom? You? Certainly not the coach who's a monty to pick him in the first half dozen for "'our premiership team"
Has to be one of your worst posts.

Re: #14!!!!!
A number on here place emphasis on goals kicked - not on contribution to team performance.
The fact that 2 of Geary's 15 disposals were goals (and he took a fine mark late - one of 4 marks for the game) no doubt influences opinion.
The very fact that he was able to impact on the score card is acknowledged as the outcome we need to consistently see from our defensive players - including not only scoring but by penetrating line breaking running and kicking creating opportunity to score.
Roberton taking a mark and careering to just outside the 50 to goal was team lifting - aka Gram of past times.
The criticism is not of Geary and his commitment - it is the recognition that that magical word "rebound" needs to be addressed.
Perhaps, just perhaps, those 2 goals may be the catalyst.

Always been a vocal fan SainterK, and I'd say all but the most obstinate supporters would be in total agreement with you. The guy is one of our first picked each week for good reason.SainterK wrote:Just don't
