VFL mid-season wrap

With all Peter Jackson VFL teams having played at least 11 games, the field of contenders has turned for home in the run to the finals.

We look at each club’s stats leaders, formline and stand-out players during the season so far and also outlines their remaining fixtures.

SANDRINGHAM (3rd, 9-2, 135.2%)

Stats leaders: Goals – Trent Dennis-Lane (21) / Kicks – Eli Templeton (148) / Marks – Templeton (59) / Handballs – Templeton (114)

Formline: Sandringham has showed last year’s rise under coach Paul Hudson was no fluke, looking primed to secure another finals double-chance. The Zebras have won nine of their last 10 games after losing to the Box Hill Hawks by 37 points in Round 1, including their last six since being humbled by the Casey Scorpions by 31 points in Round 6.

Stand-outs: Sandringham lost several match-winners over the off-season but a handful of young St Kilda ball-winners have stepped up and dominated the stats sheet. New captain Trent Dennis-Lane, Myke Cook and Tom Simpkin have provided the VFL-listed backbone, while the Zebras have seen hard-nut Kade Answerth seamlessly transition to senior football, Elliot Le Grice flourish in defence and Joe Fisscher emerge as a goalkicking option.

The run home: Port Melbourne (H) / Casey Scorpions (A) / Williamstown (H) / North Ballarat (A) / Box Hill Hawks (H) / Richmond (H) / Werribee (A) – some tests ahead.

Port kicked 9 in the first and Sandy were never in the hunt - dragged the margin back but ran out of time

Saw a twitter text re: rumours about Freezer and his hammy - but no concrete reports as yet

They didn't mention him barr he wasn't injured and we lost 9.6.60 to 11.15.81 that was after they kicked 9 goals in the 1st Qrt with a howling wind, we never recovered fromthat.

Don't care how much influence he had on the game. So long as he got through it uninjured.

I've just tweeted our club and Sandy requesting some info re Freezer. Pretty poor by the Zebs not tweeting about it. His game was more relevant than the result.

Obviously not yours ....... and yes I will post what I like be it inconsequential (in your stressed out head) or informative

If you are having trouble processing information or coordinating a simple search yourself then I suggest you get some help

So was it that Port kicked the first 9 goals and Sandy pegged the margin back but fell short - that you didn't understand?

Or

that there was a rumor doing the rounds that Freeza might have hurt his hammy again but that there were no concrete evidence to confirm this rumor?

Just reporting only what I found and read on BF and the Sandy Twitter feed - which you obviously couldn't be bothered to search yourself

God forbid your better half doesn't forget telling you about getting up and having to go to work

.............. and where you have to go

NJURY-PRONE St Kilda recruit Nathan Freeman emerged unscathed after playing his first match in two months for Sandringham on Sunday.

The former Collingwood midfielder spent most of his time on the wing in what was a relatively quiet performance. He spent time on the field in every quarter and was restricted to a total of 80 minutes on the field.

Freeman was rusty with his kicking and his touch, as would be expected for someone who has lined up in only two games this season.

The 21-year-old copped a knock to his right shoulder in the third quarter, but stayed out on the ground. He eventually had the joint check out but would return to the field soon afterwards.

He finished the contest with his shoulder iced, but Sandringham officials weren't concerned about the knock.

Hamstring troubles have meant Freeman is yet to make his AFL debut despite this being his third year since being drafted.

It was his first game at VFL level for the season. His last game was on May 14, when he notched 10 disposals for the Zebras' reserves.

His first contest since moving to St Kilda was on April 9, when he racked up 46 disposals in three quarters at the same level.

Sandringham had its six-game winning streak broken by Port Melbourne, with the Zebras losing by 22 points.
