I agree with you on that mate. I thought the pressure they applied was relentless and they we playing a good standard of footy.lintonstreet wrote:Way too harsh.BigMart wrote:A s*** effort

Do you think Hawthorn were saying that when we almost beat them or just maybe could it have been that we played our best footy on the day.
I was at the game and trust me Essendon played probably the best they have played all year-their pressure was very good.
our effort was far from s***.

Re: The best thing out of today
The injectors have been playing more than ok over the last month are are due for a win the way they are going about it. We didn't play particularly well but we ground out a victory
During the last five minutes we could of ( and possibly would have in the past ) have lost that game
Stevens stood up once again... Elite player, also it was the mostly the younger players who stood up when it counted, here we saw a slight changing of the guard , something that we need to see during the next season.
Good teams find a way to win when playing badly. Like the Hawks 3 point wins early in the season
I'm sure the coaching staff and Most of the players will be dirty on themselves on the teams overall performance. Time to rake a chill pill ... We could have lost, we didn't.

Across the ground they won a lot of one-on-one contests BUT when it mattered we lifted.
Not too many years ago, we would have been runover. This team has some character and pride and its young leaders will serve us well in the years to come - Jacky Boy, Jack newnes, Mav etc,
My view is if you start to condemn your side after a win then Saints are not for you.

BM has his opinion on the Essendon game. I don't share his opinion. This doesn't mean that I ( or anyone else ) stand in "easily pleased" lobby, that ( again ) is merely the opinion of BM.

Re: The best thing out of today
Essendon targeted this game as one they possibly could win and set themselves to knock us off with a sustained intense effort all day. Their gut running was very good. Even at the end they were still attacking. They might suffer a let down this week and get thrashed, but you watch how they come out when they play a Gary Ablett-less Suns and Brisbane at Docklands in a few rounds time. They'll win 2 more games this season I reckon.
Gold Coast were the same when they played us - no wins for ten games and they play us up there with a strong side in - come out and blow us off the park. Luckily for them the weeks they were almost full strength they played us and Brisbane in Queensland. Without Ablett and Rischetelli they'll struggle to win another game.
All of which is why I will be very interested to see our approach to the game on Sunday - we haven't played well for a couple of weeks, and playing Melbourne. Confidence at our ability to match them will be high. Richo and the coaching team will have given them an absolute bake too. I wonder if we'll have a very good game against them. I have a sneaky suspicion we will win and win well.

Re: The best thing out of today
With sport - or any performance come to that, theatre, music or whatever - it's not how you perform at your best but how you perform at your worst that counts. When we get to the stage where we can replace performances like the Adelaide and West Coast ones with performances like last week's, we're in with a chance.

FFS
Think about who we played!!!!
That was indeed embarrassing!!!!
Essendon (a possible top 8 team?) missing 14 of their best 22 and probably 8 of their best 10 players!!!!!
It was disgusting

I don't think anyone was actually pleased, more relieved.BigMart wrote:Easily pleased.
I remember being the last Victorian team to lose to Fitzroy.
I remember being 63 points ahead of Hawthorn and losing.
I didn't want Sunday to be one of those games.
We played poorly but at least we got the points and saved ourselves from certain humiliation. And we all know it.

Timid Timmy coached us when Hawks came from 44 points down and beat us.BackFromUSA wrote:+1samuraisaint wrote:I don't think anyone was actually pleased, more relieved.BigMart wrote:Easily pleased.

What is this 63 points of which you speak, pray tell?

No, it was 63 points not 44. I remember particularly well because I got to Waverley late and we were 11 goals up - you beauty! - and then we hardly scored again for the rest of the game!!WellardSaint wrote:Timid Timmy coached us when Hawks came from 44 points down and beat us.BackFromUSA wrote:+1samuraisaint wrote:I don't think anyone was actually pleased, more relieved.BigMart wrote:Easily pleased.

was listening on radio to that game, you're quite right - we were 63 points up early in the second quarter. halftime led by 44. shocking loss.freely wrote:No, it was 63 points not 44. The beginning of the end for Timmy. Five wins from his last 34 as coach. Another "gift" from the dopers.
I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!

As bad as Timmy was, the club's appalling performance under him led to a new era that almost saw us pinch a flag or two.

Re: The best thing out of today
For BigMart to say that the Essendon game was the worst game he's seen since the eighties is simply allowing frustration to get the better of logic. I've been watching this club since coming to Australia in 1990 and the Essendon game last Sunday, is WAY down the list of my most disappointing/frustrating/demoralising results. Blights last game in charge ( V Adelaide) ranks up there among the worst. The 80-odd point home shellacking by Port in 2002, and the 122 point loss to Geelong the following week is in there too. The disgraceful effort for Rooeys 300th against the Bulldogs is another doozie! So BM, pull your head in, take a chill pill and get behind the boys V Melbourne! Alright?

Re: The best thing out of today
In all of those games we weren't playing a side on paper that we were 15-20 goals better than...
We lost in the 80's and early 2000's by what we should've been beaten by... We were hideous!!!
I can accept being beaten by better opposition
