Luke Delaney

Post: # 1621936Post Con Gorozidis »

Probably deserves his own thread.
Most of us (and probably even the man himself) had assumed this would be his last year in the AFL.
After tonight..... I am not so sure.....

He is big. He is strong. He is composed most of the time. And as we know big defenders dont grow on trees.
Struggles against Fwds who run around a lot like Cameron but against 'stay home' fwds like Hawkins/Patton etc he is very effective.

Good, solid big defenders aren't easy to find.

The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

You have to give players chances... Even if they mess the odd one up

I like him.

His cool head prevailed when it counted and he kept Hawkins on a tight rein.

I thought overall his game was good but he needs to affect a few more contests. There was an example in the third where he just wasn't ferocious enough and they got a goal because of it. If he can add a bit more aggression to his game I'd undoubtedly say keep him. He needs a bit of Maxy in him. But I think he is worth persevering with, I didn't think that at the start of the season.

Great to see him take his chances. I agree with Con in OP, that if the match up is right he does his job well . Will be needed against Sam Day next week.

When Carlisle got suspended, and Hugh got injured, this gave Delaney and Lee their opportunity. I like having an old fashioned full back on the list - somebody to stand the power forwards. I would like Lee, when he comes back, and Delaney to play in the firsts for the rest of the season.

Delaney is far better than Fisher as a one on one defender against the big forwards. Looking forward to see him play the season out. Tom Lynch, Joe Daniher and J Hogan await him in the next three weeks

I've never why people think he should be delisted. To me he's always been a really valuable backup as a big backmen. I said I preferred Delaney over Dempster in our 22 because he can shut down the big forward gorrillas and free up our other defenders. His big downside is his disposal which is pretty average and he's not a big marker, preferring to punch. He's also seems to have some on going hip issues. But he could be a 'horses for courses' player when its vital a huge forward needs to be shut down. What if Carlisle or Goddard went down in a prelim? You need that sort of cover.

I'd prefer to keep Del on the list than Dempster who we have many possible replacements - Robeton, Webster, Mckenzie, White, Coughlin etc

Not sure anyone was saying he SHOULD be delisted. People were just saying if you are 26 and playing every week in the VFL and dont have a contract - there is a good chance you will be de-listed. It is a fact of footy life. 7 people go every single year. But Luke might have just got himself out of that 7.

The reality is we have had our two best wins of the season with Demspter and Fisher both out of the side. Now this might be luck of the draw but noone can continue to argue that Fisher and Dempster are crucial to the side's chances or structures. Myth busted.

Need a back up defender on the list , will be a battle i think between him and lee with the * being if fisher retires they both could stay as Carlile comes in but Goddard won't be seen until late 2017 at senior level, so again a position exists.

hes certainly a handy back up when theres injuries. thought he kept his cool and played very well when the game was on the line in that last quarter. He struggled 1-1 with hawkins but i dont think many backs can match hawkins anyways. out of him and Lee id certainly keep delaney on the list as a back up/depth player.

I think he's better than depth. He's solid and reliable and can do the job on big forwards. Maybe lacking a bit of dash, but you can't be all things to all people.

Adds something to the backline no other current player can yet cover on the bigger stay at home forwards. I think we should keep him, didn't he finish 5th in our B&F in his first season? If Dempster retires then I think there's pla th of room on the list to keep him. He plays the team defense roll exceptionally well

How quickly we forget

Wasn't chips one of our best players just a few weeks ago?

Who's forgotten?

Chips isn't aging in reverse.

Personally I would keep Dal and not put my eggs in the "Chips stays injury free" and "Carlisle keeps out of trouble" baskets.

He's the best KPD on our list. Insane that we weren't playing him.
