ST KILDA hopes wingman Jack Billings will be available to play against Gold Coast in round 15 after avoiding surgery on his injured ankle.
However, Billings will not play at any level this weekend as he continues to recover from the injury suffered against Essendon in round nine.
He was dropped from the seniors after the 88-point drubbing against Adelaide in round 11 and lined up for Sandringham in the VFL a fortnight ago.
He racked up 28 disposals in that game and with both the senior and reserves team having a bye last week, the left-footer was able to rest his ankle.
Upon sustaining the injury against the Bombers several weeks ago, Billings left the ground late in the first term but returned to play 74 per cent of the match.
"He's been quite courageous really, in terms of putting his hand up to play (two weeks ago) in the VFL, when he clearly wasn't quite right. He wasn't right in Adelaide (either)," Richardson said.
"He just needs to get his body right. He'll have another week off.
"He saw the surgeon last night and (he's) all clear there. His ankle's been giving him a bit of grief. He hasn't been able to be at his best athletically.
Billings was drafted at No.3 in the 2013 NAB AFL Draft.
"We're hoping he'll just miss this week, and be right to play the week after, but we'll just have to wait and see how he trains and how he responds."
Reflecting back to the Essendon game, Billings disposal and attemps on goal were nowhere near what we have been accustomed to including that, running free thru half forward, he chose to shoot an goal on his right foot - and missing!
The reason is now confirmed.
And how much was our team on the park in Adelaide compromised?
No Fisher then Riewoldt, Dempster, McCartin going down plus Billings struggling.
Probably explains why I saw him breezing past the contest several times during the Adelaide game (much to my frustration), if he lacked the ability to twist and turn.
