St Kilda has made six changes ahead of Sunday’s clash with Carlton at Etihad Stadium, with untried ruckman Lewis Pierce set for a long awaited debut after landing at Linen House Centre at the end of 2012.
Alan Richardson was forced to make four changes due to injury, with Captain Nick Riewoldt (knee), Sean Dempster (knee), Hugh Goddard (Achilles) and Paddy McCartin all unavailable, while rebounding defender Brodie Murdoch and midfielder-forward Jack Billings were omitted.
After waiting three and a half seasons for an opportunity, 21-year-old ruckman Pierce has been named to make his maiden appearance against the Blues, following a month of strong form in the VFL.
I remember 2-3 years ago we were still debating the Hickey v Longer v Stanley and ppl suggested that Pierce could be the best of them all. Then in that time...
Stanley played down back then left
Hickey had a break out game and disappeared, struggling to impact VFL games
Longer became the main ruck last year
A young Jason Holmes looked on the verge of overtaking them all in the ruck at least
And still no Pierce in that time.
I was a big wrap for him early but honestly I thought the writing was on the wall for him at the start of the season... Especially after Hickey comprehensively took the #1 ruck mantle.
