Re: Jealous of the cats
Not jealous, good on 'em I say...I've pointed at Sydney for years as an example of how cycles are a myth.
However, I'd say today's Geelong is a happy culmination of shrewd recruiting and good luck. Remembering that they were complete garbage for many years and emerged along side us in 2004 as a result of bottoming out. Top the 2004 team up with some handy father/sons and they were on fire for years. At the end of it their veterans afforded them salary cap space to go on a mega spending spree, whilst some departing superstars got them some good picks.
They've done well and list has looked scary for the last 2 seasons...yet to really produce the goods though. Like GWS hysteria, very premature at this stage.

O'Meara's got a dud knee, he won't be the player he could have been. I hope the Saints don't try and get him. Waste of money, waste of a draft pick or traded player.Con Gorozidis wrote:Oh boy if the Hawks get O'Meara their fans will be unbearably smug if they aren't already.
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

The Cats cannot possibly win the flag with Rhys Stanley in their team (soft as butter and that is why Richo got rid of him while his athleticism was still worth trading)

Re: Jealous of the cats
If I had to picka team to win this year's flag now it would be the Swans.
Buddy is back to his best.
Tippet is now going
Kennedy and others who dipped last year are back to their best as well. With Mitchell now matured that is a classy and deep midfield again.
Lots of very talented young guns.
Probably lack a star key defender, but are looking good elsewhere.

Re: Jealous of the cats
They have GWS next week coming off a loss so they could find themselves out of the top 4 - then they have North and Bulldogs
Cats with no 1st round pick this year as well and will likely lose Bartel (will be 33) and Enright (will be 36) who are still vital cogs
Will be in no mans land soon enough

Re: Jealous of the cats
If the Swans can get Talia back on the field they should be favourites. If they had Johnson up and running they would win i comfortably but their defence remains their only weakness. Will come down to injuries but I think only the Hawks, GWS, Norf and the Swans can win it. I am writing off the Eagles and Geelong. Crows and Bulldogs not quite good enough but might be next year.

Losses to Collingwood and Carlton??!!
Soft draw will make it most likely that they do. The Dangerfield hype (who chose them ) has made people too over-excited by their other aquisitions.
Bolton has transformed the Blues in workrate and in adopting a modern gameplan. Under Malthouse last year the Blues were aimless. Cripps adds to what was quitea reasonable midfield.
* Suspect that Blues could be the new Richmond though. ie their older players like Murphy will help their youngsters make it to mid table, but rebuild wise they are missing many more positions/players than the Saints currently are.
Pies were shocking, but they do have a fair bit of young talent and so were underperforming.

Re: Jealous of the cats
Playing at Geelong is a very significant advantage to them - but also masks their deficiencies.
I seem to recall that we were unlucky not to defeat them late last season when we finally got to play them away from Geelong - it was a draw.
Over rated.

Jack Steven was saying today that we needed to take a top 8 scalp.
I think we have a chance of knocking off Geelong if we bring our pressure and tackling.
I have watched the last two Geelong matches and they haven't performed well under real pressure.

Re: Jealous of the cats
I'd rather lose to Carlton and win v Geelong. That would really bring them down to earth with a thud.
Sure Id rather win both - but if i had to chose. I'd rather beat Geelong.

Re: Jealous of the cats
That is a shocking loss by Geelong
If they can't win with
Hawkins, Motlop, Selwood, Danger, Blicvas, Guthrie, Duncan
Scott is kidding himself... That is woeful

We are definitely a chance. But it depends which StKilda plays as we have oscillated from very good to dismal. And in particular if our midfield is switched on.
Our quick ball movement can worry the Cats as they are still a sluggish team.

Re: Jealous of the cats
As I've said before, Geelong's 'next wave' isn't much good.
Guthrie, Duncan, Caddy etc. are just Ok.
They con everyone when they fall in behind Selwood, Kelly, Bartel, Enright etc. - but when these guys moved on, they struggled. Until early this year when Dangerfield and Selwood were lighting it up, they suddenly came good again!
With Selwood and Dangerfield being quietish lately, these guys are once again showing that they're just Ok.
You'll see exactly the same thing at Hawthron over the next year or two as their genuine superstars move on.
You just can't replace once in a generation players that easily.

Re: Jealous of the cats
Agree.. Which is also why we need to gain two midfield guns if we want to get to Top 4. We have most pieces of the jigsaw now, but need some more elite midfield cream.Johnny Member wrote:As I've said before, Geelong's 'next wave' isn't much good.
