Re: Happy Birthday Stan
Love Stan, watched his debut for Melbourne against the Dogs at Western Oval in 1965. That was the Demons' 8th straight win and the last time they were any good. The next week, Queens Birthday weekend, was against the Saints - Howell to full-forward, Murray to fullback. Norm Smith sacked and the rest is history.
Loved Stan as a player because he always had a look of delight on his face. Still does.
Great Saints man and did wonders for the club as senior coach. Copped what most Saints coaches cop if they look like having the slightest bit of success (think GT, Mike Patterson before him).
Stan was a commentator at yesterdays game. Aussie Jones paid him a wonderful, heartfelt tribute.
Good on you Stanley!

Re: Happy Birthday Stan
Think he had a different type of personality and this was the main issue.....A bit of a jackle and hyde.... Looked like butter wouldn't melt but his serves to players put Rocket Eade to shame ... Who was the Saints player he grabbed by the throat at the MCG when Stan forgot we sack for s moment there were 40,000 people watching? That said I I think he was a good coach , but like most of our coaches we sack them before they can finish a decent apprenticeship .
Ps it's my birthday too!!

That was a different coach
Stan was detested by the plying group in 98
It was like he took his personal frustrations and regrets out on them in 98... He knew he'd blown a chance and when he realised halfway through 98 he was not going to get another crack that year, he lost it

Would loved to have seen him play, but it was a little before my time.Trev from the Bush wrote:Love Stan, watched his debut for Melbourne against the Dogs at Western Oval in 1965. I agree with what you said in regards to his coaching and commitment. It was a shame how 1998 unfolded.
The death of his son was tragic. I don't think he had any other children.

Re: Happy Birthday Stan
P.S. I always wondered if Stan was related to Hollywood producer Joe Alves (most famous for producing Spielberg's JAWS). There is quite a physical resemblance between the two:

Re: Happy Birthday Stan
Like the rest of us. Really, to lose your No 1 ruckman in the last two minutes of the last game of the year and your No 2 ruckman in the first 15 minutes of the next game (1st semi), to have the father on one player die on the night before the GF, the sister of another in the week before and the knee go on your best midfielder in the first ten minutes of the GF, is enough to drive anyone mad. It was those events that led to his desperation. He was the last coach we had that valued the basic skills of the game above "game plans".BigMart wrote:He coached well in 96/97
