Tom Hickey
Has now proved me absolutely wrong!
Underwhelming (even in the VFL) in the last few years, too light and easily pushed around.
Fitter, stronger and older he has gone to a level I felt he couldn't make. His game today, I rated higher than R1. Purely because he was up against the best and did more than hold his own.
Sometimes it's a good thing to be incorrect, when you don't think a guy has what it takes.
We gave up a high pick for him, that's ok ... But we also have up a lot for Billy Longer... Who's playing VFL.

Re: Tom Hickey
Good post BM. Hickey has just been a colossus this year.
Could be an AA ruckman in a few years time.

Re: Tom Hickey
Admitedly I do not go every week, but theSandy games I saw Hickey always struck me as a No 1 ruck in the making due to his all round game and atheltic ability. I always though and posted that he should be preferred to Longer.BigMart wrote:

.
Unfortunately the club often played him as a key forward which he is not. This may have assisted in his development though, but made it harder for him to shine.

Re: Tom Hickey
Must admit I was wondering if he had the body for No1 ruck. That being said AR appeared to keep him back last season in preference for Longer.... Seems like he's doing a reverse switch. AR may be a bit smarter than we give him credit for, don't think it's a co incidence . I have always been one of he posters to sY let our ruck stocks sort themselves out. I cannot understand why many think we would be getting rid of any of our ruck stocks.. Short sighted I feel
And the president said " I did not have sex with that woman"
And our former president said " Football is like golf"

Re: Tom Hickey
First year he has done full pre season, making a huge difference. I think interrupted pre seasons , especially with developing players take a lot more from them than we the public realise. The reduction in interchange also helps him as he is aerobically pretty good.

I always thought you were hard on him, always reminded me of a young Everitt, he is a beauty! Gave Gawn a hiding today.BigMart wrote:Has now proved me absolutely wrong!

Re: Tom Hickey
Great to see so much improvement this year - we need it. He will get better at the center bounces as the year goes along. He is also moving well around the ground.
Should be taking a few more marks.

he certainly didn't break even. he dominated Gawn. His taps and groundwork was influential. Has great skills for a big man.

Re: Tom Hickey
Great ruck contestant, but it's his ground play that has always excited me.
He's a footballer not just a ruckman!

Last year, he was played fwd 75% of the time
Even at Sandy
Possibly a development tactic?

One of the few times I have been right on a player.
Just to even it up, always thought Seb Ross would not make it. I am as happy as BM to say he has proven me wrong

Re: Tom Hickey
I love Hickey's influence at stoppages and I'm not just talking about his ruck work, which has been surprisingly good against some of the best ruckmen in the competition. This guy is not only working hard but I think he is footy smart (i.e. he knows how to position his body and his contested footy shouldn't be underestimated)
The competition for spots with Longer and both Pierce and Holmes knocking on the door is healthy for the club. Well done to Tom and well done to list management

At this stage, and the season is young, I think that Holmes may struggle to be with us next season. And if he is it may be just for depth or injury coverage as you say.
If Pierce comes on, and has had 2 good games now for Sandy this year, it decreases the chances of Holmes staying.

Just watching the first quarter replay. The commentators are all over Gawn until the penny drops and they realise he is being towelled up
