Lyon is a great coach and we could very well win the spoon.Con Gorozidis wrote:We will be bottom 4. Wont win the spoon though. Essendon and Carlton will be hard to beat for that. The Fireman wrote:could we win the spoon ?
Freo are also Spoon bound. Probably not this year but next year. Lyon has been FOUND OUT AS A FRAUD.

Dogs list and the general quality / excitement reminds me of saints 2004
I don't get the sense that we have the same quality. We have one billings - that's it.
Money balling early picks has cost us I reckon

we were a disgrace tonight.
Richo has to take some responsibility for what was a completely useless game plan, whatever it was.

In a disgusting team has done alright

Re: Saints V Dogs Thread
I am not having a go at the coach. He has done a pretty good job with the cattle and is trying to build experience. I think our playing team needs to be older though. This will cost experience in top game time but helps to build the team disciplines like Ross used to insist on. We will struggle with all these younger smaller players. They may be more skilful but at the top game speed these skills will be found out. The team needs to be fit and confident, not just trying to gain some skills with youthful exuberance.Con Gorozidis wrote:Yeah but you know. Our coach demands excellence . Acres not good enough apparently. But coach's faves - Gresham, Sinclair, Dunstan gifted games.kalsaint wrote:Gresham to 2's. The 3AW team agree with me about having too many of the same ilk in the team. Too many smaller type players.
I say all this being mindful of the GT days when I used to scream out for a spark when players were locked into a game plan that was difficult to execute at times. Grant, on Footy Confidential was in awe of Ross's work and discipline but this also failed later as other teams worked out how to pass the zone and the team lost creativity and scoring ability (that Geelong had to win the 2009 GF).
Scott tried to improve the creativity but the defensive game started to fail with injection of a lot more youth. More youth again and the defense has improved but the one thing critical missed over those years of 4 coaches has been the bad kicking. Grant probably had the best of this. Grant and Ross had enough big bodied players to protect the ball carrier to minimise the kicking skill errors. We don't had the height and strength to do this yet it appears but I worry that senior players get free but still kick directly to the opposition.
Yes I am an armchair critic. The game is hard but other teams have caught up then passed us by a long margin and closing te gap is tough when they have the team balance and confidence to deliver their game plan.
Richo is forging way but we still suffer from skills at this level. I cant understand playing Gresham when others are doing really well in the reserves as AFL level is a massive change to adapt to. It is this guys with height, position flexibility and greater experience that need a chance to show their improvement at AFL level. Fail and they should be delisted. The youth need development in the two's like Paddy and Goddard did.
Midfield clearances and clear winners are needed to make an effective forward line.

McCartin instead of Petracca.
Lonie instead of Caleb Daniels.
Acres instead of Hartung.
Not looking great for our recruiters tonight.

I agree with all above bar Freo. They are suffering from lack of speed and have not developed the bodies for this. It will help them in th second half of the season and I suspect they will be 6th with the bodies to match finals footy after a tough season. The Fireman wrote:Lyon is a great coach and we could very well win the spoon.Con Gorozidis wrote:We will be bottom 4. Funnily enough its the new rule providing a break before finals that resulted from Ross's tactic to rest players that now may reduce the tiredness before finals by other teams. All those who play with the rules get their just desserts.

Yeah it was glaringly obvious tonight. Nerves is one thing but his speed was way off. With the way the game has evolved he needs to do a hell of a lot of work to live up to his No.1 draft expectations.

Re: Saints V Dogs Thread
McCartin seemed at the time a panicked impulse pick. The Boyd deal gave the impression big full forwards would become impossibly expensive to get. so we drafted the best of the bunch that year. but it looks like the wrong era for big, slow full forwards. could be we have been put back by our last two drafts - time we can't afford to waste. we need to snag at the least one very, very good player and one good player every year we're down the bottom end. so far we may have billings in the former category - hopefully.

I grant you he is above average - but 'great'? Honestly how do you define 'great'? I am all ears.
If Lyon is 'great' then what are Clarkson (4 flags), Matthews (4) , Bomber Thompson (2), Mick Malthouse (3) ?

On a side note, could the AFL please stop changing the rules? It got beyond a joke some time ago; I seriously wonder if the rules committee are just taking the pi$$.
Do not meddle in the affairs of Dragons; for you are a quick and tasty morsel.

Hartung is in one of the greatest sides of the modern era
And Lonie was a pick 41, if we got a player like him at every pick that late I'd take it every day of the week.

Daniels went at 38 or so didn't he?
If he was still there I reckon they would have taken him.

Skill level still killing us. They've had 5 years to fix it and nothing seems to have changed. Bottom 3 seems the way based on tonight's performance. Really bad.

Not too worried about these picks, the trading of pick 5 for Carlisle and 14 doesn't look great at the moment. Watched Parish today and he looks like he is going to be a gunWaltzing St Kilda wrote:McCartin instead of Petracca.

How many times does it have to be explained that Parish wasn't there at our original pick 5 that turned into pick 6?Tom_Sainter wrote:Not too worried about these picks, the trading of pick 5 for Carlisle and 14 doesn't look great at the moment.
