If there’s one thing more challenging than the pressures of playing Australian Rules at the elite level each week, it’s officiating it.
But that hasn’t deterred Leigh Fisher from becoming an AFL umpire.
The former Saint has taken up the role since finishing his playing career, and isn’t affected by the negative demands associated with arguably the toughest job in sport.
But as Fisher explains to aflplayers.com.au, donning the green shirt has its challenges.
“Umpiring is probably more intense mentally, while physically we’re constantly running up and back and the demands are probably similar to playing – except you don’t have the bumps, which makes it a lot easier. But in terms of mentally, I find it’s probably more challenging because you can’t switch off for one minute,” Fisher said.
“It’s a completely different dynamic because you arrive at the rooms and there might be only six or eight umpires and there’s three field umpires so that’s your team, I suppose.

Do you keep in contact with many former team mates?
Yes, I stay in contact with a number of former team mates. Having played at two clubs (Saints and Swans) there is always someone to catch up with when I am interstate.
Who is the best player you have seen?
In the current day it’s hard to go past Gary Ablett. I was lucky enough to play with some pretty handy players in Robert Harvey, Tony Lockett and Paul Kelly.
What was the highlight of your career?
Playing in the 1997 Grand Final vs Adelaide Crows – unfortunately the result was not favourable!
How often are you still recognised?
Fairly regularly, but I am often mistaken for Michael Voss! Not sure how Vossy feels about that.
Do you enjoy the current game?
It has changed a lot and there is a big gap between a good and average game, however I still do enjoy watching, with particular admiration of the skill level.

eA former AFL player has been suspended from a VFL club after he got in a punch-up with an official in front of spectators at the weekend.
Police are investigating an alleged fight between Frankston Dolphins president Bruce Cass and former coach Robert Mace at Frankston Park on Sunday.
Mace played 80 AFL games during the 1980s for Hawthorn, St Kilda and the Brisbane Bears.
The middle-aged men apparently fought at half-time during the Dolphin's loss to Geelong's VFL side. The scuffle is said to have taken place in front of the social club at Frankston Park in sight of fans.
Dolphin's general manager Simon Green said Cass had stepped down from his job as president and Mace had been suspended from the club while police were looking into the matt

http://nthringwoodfc.com.au/brett-moyle-saintsational/
a candid review of his AFL days.
http://nthringwoodfc.com.au/brett-moyle-saintsational/
a candid review of his AFL days.
.”“Towards the end of the season in ’99 the senior club got quite a few injuries so I suppose the flow on effect was that I got more opportunity and playing time in the reserves.”
After a good season, the silly season would come around again and with limited spots available Moyle would look to the draft, this time he would be taken with St Kilda’s final pick in the Rookie Draft.
“It was awesome, I was getting hopeful after playing some good footy but I was told that wasn’t going to happen, I managed to sneak our last rookie list spot.”
“It was always a dream and to be able to get on a list was amazing.”
Moyle would make his debut in 2000 against the Brisbane Lions in a 39 point defeat at the then Colonial Stadium.
“I can’t remember a lot, it was a long time ago now. I played at Oakleigh with Luke Power and he gave me a tap on the backside when I came off the bench and said well done, so that was nice but apart from that it is all a bit hazy.”
Playing 12 games in his first season, Moyle would also pick up a Rising Star nomination after having 26 kicks against Sydney.
“To get nominated was good, and to get recognition just meant I’d played well that week, I was just concentrating on getting a game at the time so that just really meant I would be playing next week.”
Throughout his career Moyle had some bad injuries at bad times. He would miss nearly half of both seasons 2001 and 2002 with a broken leg and corky in respective seasons.
“I think the broken leg and corky came at times where if I had been fit I would have been getting a regular game, so I think that cost me games at a stage where the club was looking to give players opportunity and build for the future.” “I don’t think that cost me a spot on the list though, I think what cost me was young players like Luke Ball, Leigh Montagna, Nick Dal Santo, Brendon Goddard and Xavier Clarke all came in along with experienced players like Stephen Powell and Heath Black. I just got shuffled down the pecking order and unfortunately for me that’s just footy.”
Moyle prefers to look back on his time in the AFL as an opportunity taken not missed.
“I’m more grateful now that I was able to play as many games as I did rather than resentful that I didn’t last longer

Kain Taylor coached the Mt Eliza U11 team to the premiership in his first season as coach.
There was some fine young talent on display including his own son Will a small but agile mid who is a tackling machine.

Kain is a good bloke who is great with the kids.

WHEN I first joined Essendon I was excited to play with BJ (Brendon Goddard). He did a lot of talking and at first, I enjoyed listening to what he had say. He reads the game well. Unfortunately I found him to be too self-centred. At Geelong I saw first-hand how effective that selfless attitude could be, so listening to BJ was like lighting a short fuse.
At the start of my career I was selfish. I was worried about getting a game each week and if I did play, it was about kicking that spectacular goal. Then I learnt about trust and self-sacrifice and how far it could take you and the team. I learnt to restrain myself at the times that mattered so I would be more predictable to my teammates and I stopped trying to snag them from the boundary.
BJ is a perfectionist. In terms of preparation and the standards he sets on and off the field, he is a very good leader. He demands that players get into the club early, train as hard as they can and leave better players. In meetings during the week, he delivered good messages but was very abrupt. Not everyone likes that tactic, but more importantly, not everyone responds to it. That’s fine, but if you are abrupt all the time it loses its edge.

The Perth Football Club is proud to announce the signing of former St. Kilda midfielder Clint Jones.
Jones was originally drafted in 2007 as a mature age rookie draft pick from South Fremantle. At the Bulldogs he was a dual best and fairest and a member of the 2005 premiership side. It was during this time that current Perth CEO Marty Atkins developed a close bond with Jones as the club’s Football Manager. Last season Jones was Best and Fairest for VFL club Sandringham before deciding to return home with his wife Jessica.
Demons Football Operations Manager Tyson Beattie says it is a significant signing for the club. “Clint Jones has a remarkable football resume. His ability to play and train at such a high standard for so long is a testament to his dedication to the game. We can’t wait to have Clint make his mark on the club as he has done at every other team he has been with.” Jones joins an already talented midfield alongside Liam McKenna, captain Dene White and Sandover Medallist Aidan Tropiano. Jones is another significant signing for the Demons after former Richmond ruckman Angus Graham joined the club in November.

I believe Sandy have bugger all money and the players leaving suggest that maybe right. Sandy are really going to struggle in a year or two or whenever we leave them.
Re: Former Players- where are they now
we will also struggle withought Sandy
without doubt the best players over the last three years have been
Cook, Cockie, Brown, Jones
whilst Le Grice, TDL and Ong have been handy senior players

Apparently that was a year old and it isn't his missus anymore but he is still ripped because that is now his job. He is playing at Old Ivanhoe next year. Well at the moment he is.
