Well said.CQ SAINT wrote:And why shouldnt you. I concede that what I said does not apply to Polly Farmer and maybe Williams too. Both Legends who did something rare if not unique. I retract my silly comment. But I will keep my perspective on Ross. Its a good thing that he's a fringe player who has an ability to take the next step. Says a lot for our plan and recruiting. But if you become over loyal or complacently happy with winning and not improving the list you will never win 3 premierships in a decade let alone a row.saynta wrote:I will stick with my Polly Farmer comment. His handballing skills changed the way the game was played.CQ SAINT wrote:Im not going to put Ross down and I never saw Polly Farmer play. My dad did and he was a great of the game. Take away his handball ability and he was still a great ruckman, mark and kick. Williams and Farmer are legends of the game. To say handball was there best attribute is naive. Seb Ross (as good as he may be one day) is about 100 games shy of even being mentioned in the same sentence as these 2. Take Steven, Armo, Montagna, Newnes, Billings, Dunstan and add Freeman and I am sure Seb Ross will struggle to find a spot. 3 of these players are younger and one is about to retire and IMHO they all rate higher than Ross. Then we still have to blood McKenzie and Blake.saynta wrote:Guess you have never heard of Polly Farmer then.CQ SAINT wrote:Thats the first time I ever heard handball used as the best attribute a footballer has. Do you think he is capable of taking us to a premiership or might he get a game is we get some better outside line breakers in the side. Not in our best 22 now. Dont see him in it soon.saynta wrote:CQ SAINT wrote:What makes you think he will be an elite midfielder?
He has the quickest hands on our list and is one of the best handballers I have seen at the saints in over 60 years.
I believe he can be as good as Mitchell in this area,
Besides the coach loves him.
"Last week, Richardson spoke of the club’s satisfaction in securing a number of inside midfielders with tremendous ball-winning abilities.
He also indicated his desire to add some outside polish to complement the likes of David Armitage, Luke Dunstan and Seb Ross.
Billings fits this mould to a tee, according to Richardson.
“The main area where we need to improve is using the footy and maximising our entries so that we can be more effective and put scoreboard pressure on,” he said.
“Billings is all of those things.”
The club expects Billings to resume pre-season training at full fitness.
Of course he is in our best 22. Why else would he have gotten a game?
Mind you if we trade pick five he will be required. Obviously Ross and Carlisle are a more attractive alternative to a pick 5 outside mid.

I've got a St Kilda poster up here and Ross is standing next to Acres, who is slightly taller than him. The St Kilda site has Acres at 190cm. Billings is on the other side of him and is a bit smaller. He's listed at 184cm.

Re: Seb ross height?
I would trade Seb + Second Rnd for J.Carlisle
And I think he's a nice player... I also thought Dal, Lynch, BJ, Big Boy and Rhys were nice players
I would also trade Hickey and a DP swap for Hrovat
I would trade that selection for Freeman
Hickey and Ross are our most expendable (not rubbish, you can't trade rubbish) players

Richo has a good eye for talent. Seb needs to improve his tank and he will be A grade. The main reason I like Seb is his decision making and efficiency by hand and foot. I wonder what his stats for efficiency would be like against Steven or Armo or Lukey Dunstan

Agree with that, not sure your trades add up though.BigMart wrote:Hickey and Ross are our most expendable (not rubbish, you can't trade rubbish) players

I reckon Seb, Armo, and Dunstan should spend the summer with a running coach and see if we can get a bit more speed our of them- none of them seem to have any natural burst speed.

We finished 5th bottom.
Is he good enough to be in the 22 that wins our next premiership.
If not trade out.
He has been around long enough, 4 years, for the professionals to have assessed his prospects.

And they have. The coach has assessed him as a keeper. That's good enough for me.ace wrote:Who cares who is in our best 22.saynta wrote:Guess you have never heard of Polly Farmer then.

Barry Hall was good enough to be in our best 22
Darryll Wakelin, Ben McEvoy, Rhys Stanley , Tom Lynch and loads of others... And they were stars at other clubs.
It's what you get in return.
Seb is slow... No amount of coaching is going to make him quicker... Otherwise he'd have done it.

Re: Seb ross height?
Just watching the game against Geelong, the draw. Now this could be the margarita talking, but wow he had a great game. Not only to hold Selwood, but look at all his hand passes in tight. there were two occasions in the second quarter where the other saints were hot handpassing but once it came to Ross, he had the vision to pass into space. Really really impressive in tight. Disposal could be improved, but really good first decision maker. Has the potential to be a very important player for us.

Re: Seb ross height?
I've seen 100 guys come and go where there is an 'if he could' and 'he should do this' about their game. Some of them work and work to improve and make it. They are rare. This is the plight of Seb Ross. He has it all ahead of him. I hope he makes it. My argument is that this is also what makes him a prime target for trade there is no real downside to acquiring him. He is handy. There are other players on our list who are in a similar position but not as attractive or workable. Ross has strengths but I dont see him developing to the point where I would not trade him to keep pick 5. It is what it is.
