Today illustrates very clearly what we need....
At least another 3 'A' grade midfielders from the next 3 National Drafts. It starts this November with pick 5. We have to nail this pick or else. Today also illustrates that we will not be ready to hit the FA market until 2017 at the earliest.

We need two classy outside mids. We werent far off today. We kick straight we win.
Overly pessimistic from citywest. I think we arent that far away.

Re: Today illustrates very clearly what we need....
I don't know who he supports but he is right about needing more mids.
Armitage and Steven are both elite and Montagna is still very good but won't be around much longer.
Weller and Dunstan are both very promising but I don't think they'll reach elite levels.
If we can draft two or three future a grades by the end of 2016 and pick up an a grader in the free agency we will be a thousand times better off.
Guys like Newnes, Billings, Sinclair, Lonie etc. Will be very handy in their ability to run through the middle but I think we'll be better served with them on the flanks and pockets.
We also need to give Roo more time on the wings. He gives us a target, uses the ball well, can run all day and most importantly gives us time to figure out the best combination of Bruce, McCartin, Members and Hickey.

Another 3 A Grade midfielders? Sure, if we want to build a list that will be invincible in a few years (in addition to winning a Premiership), then another 3 or let's be sure, 4 A Graders will be required.citywest wrote:At least another 3 'A' grade midfielders from the next 3 National Drafts. Armitage, Steven, Billings, Dunstan, Acres, Sinclair, Ross, Weller, Lonie are likely types, Murdoch & Templeton can play a bit too. But 3 or 4 A Graders are imperative. We also have substantial space in our salary cap, let's get rid of a few so we can maximise our space further so we can tempt Nat Fyfe. This strategy is so brilliant, that I cannot believe that competently run clubs such as Carlton & Essendon haven't thought of it.

Re: Today illustrates very clearly what we need....
Yes but where ppl get it wrong is that whilst we need more mids, we need at least 2 good to great mids now.
Not mids that won't be great for 4 years or so
We need players that can enhance the quality of our existing mids and buffer the up and comers so they can develop at their pace not getting heavily beaten every week
Whilst I'm all for getting young mids, we need A Graders too

We need good decision makers who can kick. We have way, way too many players on our list, including some recent draftees, who dont fit this mould.

Re: Today illustrates very clearly what we need....
Guess this is where the hard calls on players being paid more than they should be. Its time to call on some players that arent up to it anymore. Obviously Schneider and Ray on the outer, unfortunately Father Time has caught up with SF. Gilbert is all over the place. Too much of his bad outweighs his good.He aint getting any younger. These leave us with some big holes and experience to cover.Junction Oval wrote:Yep. Everyone agrees. Re: Today illustrates very clearly what we need....
Billings and Lonie add some foot skills and they replace two with below average foot skills. Dunstan isnt too bad either.

Re: Today illustrates very clearly what we need....
Certainly going to be a balancing act this - let's face it in many of our wins our old guys played ripper games. We still rely on themstkfc1 wrote:Guess this is where the hard calls on players being paid more than they should be. Its time to call on some players that arent up to it anymore. I think we will be taking a step back when they finally depart and it has to be staggered for sure
Ray - no loss imo good ordinary loyal soldier
Fisher - best still good enough IF fit... could be a hard call made
Gilbert - young enough but yes can't kick
Schneider - gone
Sippos - won't make it

All we lack is about 18 blokes who can kick the ball to one another. Desperation is no substitute for skill.

Look at the Hawks tonight. They showed Geelong it doesnt matter how hard you try, kicking skills will always triumph.

Re: Today illustrates very clearly what we need....
We need more than just mids. Who have we got that could play full back in a Grand Final? We need at least on tall defender this year, maybe another next year. As well as a full back, we have to find replacements for Sam F and Sean D.

A f****** GOAL KICKING COACH!!!!
We would have to be the worst set shots in the AFL, for 2nd week in a row we kicked ourselves out of it.
