Footy over Easter, but ...
The AFL have done a deal with Cricket Aust to play round 1 2016 over the (early) Easter weekend.
This weekend would normally be set aside for the Sheffield Shield final at the G.
Sensible decision that makes sense.
Though if Victoria does make the final hopefully the inept VCA will have organised an alternative venue WITHIN Victoria so we don't get bundled off to far flung territories and islands for our "home" games!!
BUT ...
amidst all this common sense it seems the old medieval superstition that you can't play sport on Good Friday lives on in the AFL.
In a world and country where numerous top level sports play on GF the AFL are still operating under the curse of Archbishop Mannix!
What century is it again?

The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.
They can even WATCH LIVE FOOTY!

I think its the century of surely we are capable of living without footy for a day. We have a BBQ with friends. Should try it. Great day. And if they play footy in the future nothing will change.

I thought the VCA were taking over the Junction Oval? Wouldn't they play their games there if the G isn't available (including their grannie)?Enrico_Misso wrote:The AFL have done a deal with Cricket Aust to play round 1 2016 over the (early) Easter weekend.

They may not have the admin facilites there until then but surely they can prepare a pitch and have porta loos for the 3 men and a dog that would turn up?plugger66 wrote:Jacks Back wrote:I thought the VCA were taking over the Junction Oval? Apparently it has to be to a certain standard and that is why they played home games interstate this year.

Re: Footy over Easter, but ...
The inept VCA had years of notice that the World Cricket Cup was coming to Melbourne but they still couldn't organise an alternative Shield venue to the MCG ANYWHERE in Victoria.
So the odds of them organising anything with just 8 months notice is ZERO.

Of course they should have organised something even if it cost 300 million. Just change for them. Not.

If so what you say makes no sense. Give me a game of footy on GF over any of that IMO and many others it seems.

There really is no valid argument against footy on good Friday.
You have the occasional zealot or contrarion pipe up to defend the sanctity of GF but they are in the vast minority.

Religious? No I would never be accused of that. I don't care if we play GF but my argument is surely people are capable of doing things without footy on a holiday. If we get the footy then great but I=f we don't then great. Either way there will be 20 or so at my house having a BBQ and drinking. No one will go to the footy whoever plays and we all love the footy. Im sure the crowds will be good though if we have it but then we get the question of who plays and calls of bias when it isn't us. And for selfish reasons I hope it isn't us because I will miss the game.
