Good points for Bulldogs game

Post: # 1559533Post fugazi »

Kicking accuracy aside, I thought the boys were terriffic tonight...56 to 44 entries! Should've won by 3 goals.

Couple of things I liked:

Savage really showed some courage tonight, and put his body in a few times and filled the hole very well
Longer did well against Minson and Roughhead, won the hit outs
Bruce's fitness...3 goals, but swung from end to end as needed, super fit
Delaney had a good game, and seemed to work some form back
Membrey...a ripper game, will be a gun
Mav Weller is just a great terrier, could be a real enforcer

Billings, Acres, D-Mac to come back into this team......not to mention Paddy & Goddard, good times will come again.

Our tackle and chasing pressure was immense which is such a positive for a side which contains a lot of young players

A few more pre seasons to build up a few more motors and we will be one tough unit to take down

Sinclair and Billings would have been the difference. 2 classy finishers who are good for 3 goals between them. We played finals like footy against a team 2 years ahead of us with a team that is widely regarded as the best under 23 list in the comp.

So many positives...
Roberton continues to improve, 23 disposals at 80% efficiency
Newnes, Steven and Armo could be the toughest trio of mids in the comp. 0ver 70 disposals and 22 tackles between them just brilliant
Membrey, showed real promise as a floating forward
Dempster smashed Stringer who is an absolute jet
Longer beat two ruck men almost single handedly and worked tirelessly all night
Ross' last quarter was influential, 11 disposals and cool under pressure
Webster has speed, mongrel, and real poise and he is the best kick in the team
Our defensive pressure as a team is as good as any in the comp, the structure is a lot better and we aren't getting burnt with the quick long bomb anymore

Win lose or draw our team is again fun to watch and you know that they will leave everything out there, at this stage in our development you can't ask for any more

Our defensive pressure is good, yes, but remember, so far we have only played bottom sides. I am looking forward to the next four matches to see how many wins we can get, and after that the season will get difficult.
Why didn't Hickey play to give Longer a chop out in the ruck? He could've played for Schneider and the ruckmen could have rotated through the forward line. Hickey may have offered more than Membrey as a tall marking forward option, but Membrey can play the mid-size forward role too from what I have seen. Plus Hickey is good at ground level. When Longer is resting up forward he would take a tall defender and give Easton Wood some headaches.
A lot of turnovers last night, especially with all the extra experience we had in our side - although losing Fisher didn't help, I'll admit.

The match itself had plenty of finals-like pressure so possessions from turnovers became the most significant stat. Unfortunately, the Dogs were able to capitalize more than we could.

The best thing from my perspective, though, is when the Dogs snuck away in the last quarter I declared it "just wasn't going to be our night". I didn't count on our new found never-say-die attitude that took the game all the way to the wire!

Very happy to admit I underestimated my team!

Bruce is playing a bit of a Roughead role. Love it.
