afl.com.au has been doing player comparisons over time
Todays pairing is Rob Harvey vs Greg Williams
Who would be your choice, Saints bias aside

Re: Harvey vs Williams
I'm not sure anyone here can put their bias aside, SB.
Harves was with us for over twenty years and is our games record holder. A heart and soul player for St.Kilda for so long, and a darn good one at that. I guess Williams has the premiership and Norm Smith medallions, which may give him the nod amongst the media. But it's R. Harvey all the way for me.

Re: Harvey vs Williams
Banger is a duel Brownlow medalist and one of the top 5 saints players to play the game. Williams was a bad tempered umpire abuser. No contest in my humble opinion.

So based on that Williams wouldnt be in the top 1000 players ever in the AFL. Reckon it is very close myself. Harvs because im a saint. More logical than a bad tempered umpire abuser.

Re: Harvey vs Williams
Both were amazing ball getters and virtually unstoppable. Probably the best two in that category of the last 25 years. Toss a coin. But Harv's is a Saint so he gets my vote.
Opinions are like arseholes, everybody's got one.

Re: Harvey vs Williams
Harvey's clean record puts a halo around him. Williams was a bit of a thug.

Harves = best evasive player the game has ever seen.
Williams = best handballer the game has ever seen.

Re: Harvey vs Williams
Williams was the best inside midfielder of the past 40 years. Could not spread or play as an outside midfielder.
Banger wasn't that far behind Diesel as an inside clearance player but was with perhaps Crawford just behind him, the best endurance midfielder of the past 40 years. His balance of inside, spread, overlap and outside midfielder skills makes him superior to Diesel as a team player.
A better comparison to Banger was Craig Bradley.
Would call them pretty even.
Bradley a better penetrating kick.
Banger a better inside midfielder than Bradley.

I have never worked out the difference. Certainly not in the last 20 years.

Re: Harvey vs Williams
When I was growing up there would be a ruck rover, rover and centre. Now they're all just midfielders.plugger66 wrote:stevie wrote:I always looked upon Williams as a true centreman. Harves was more of the ruck rover/rover type.

Who are the "utilities" these days? Players like Jason Blake?
Anyway, back on topic. We'll all say Harvey, but I'm sure Carlton fans would largely pick Williams. Different styles and all that. Williams had nastiness in his game, Harves didn't. Is that a necessary ingredient to have somewhere in a midfield?

Re: Harvey vs Williams
We were a bees diaphragm away from having both play in red, white & black too.
Adding Diesel to that 1992 side would have put us over the top. Yet ANOTHER reason to hate Carlton & Ian Collins.

Re: Harvey vs Williams
Always thought Williams was incredibly overrated. Decent player, great hands, good footy brain, but others helped him look great - Ratten, Bradley especially.
Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.
