Carey for me also.
I'd have Plugger at two, Snr at three, junior at four.
Dunstall did play in a champion team, but he also kicked 1250 goals, fantastic footballer of his era.

Re: Mike Sheehan rates Dunstall better than Lockett!
I've been going to the footy a long time, and I've only ever been fearful of one player. Wayne Carey.
He dominated the game at a time when it was tremendously competitive and physical, and his individual brilliance cajoled them to two flags. I can't say I've seen another player do it quite like he did. Without him, they were only ever a mid-table side.
Gary Ablett Jnr is the best midfielder I've seen. Ablett has that attacking goal sense which elevates him above R Harvey (previous best I'd seen).
Senior was wonderful but I'd have Lockett before him. And Dunstall was just an efficient killing machine in a great side.
Voss's leadership ability was a new level. A shade below the skill set of Ablett, he had everything you would otherwise want. Probably the most complete footballer I've seen and turned that team into warriors.
We've forgotten how good Judd was. He was so good at his best.
1. Carey
2. Ablett Jnr
3. Lockett
4. Voss
5. Ablett Snr
6. Judd
7. Riewoldt
8. Harvey
9. Dunstall
10. Goodes

Always difficult rating players.Stephen Theodore wrote:Carey for me also.

But unless you were a Hawthorn supporter, I think you would have to say that Plugger was the more entertaining to watch out of the two champion full forwards.

Re: Mike Sheehan rates Dunstall better than Lockett!
Gary Ablett Jnr is the best mid I've ever seen. Who else has won that many MVP's or even come close? Wayne Carey was the best fwd. . Kouta even in the same sentence as Roo is an insult. Roo has been BOG in that many big finals we've played in I've lost count. Has to figure in any persons top 20 of the last 25 years. Saints supporters who have watched him probably have him in top 10. I know I do.
Gary Ablet Snr was a freak, but an inconsistent one. He had one brilliant finals series and went missing in almost every other time he played finals

I rate Lockett a better journalist than Sheehan.
*Allegedly.

Re: Mike Sheehan rates Dunstall better than Lockett!
Sheehan is deliberately controversial.
It creates outrage and interest in his article.
If his top 50 was right on the money and the majority agreed there would be little interest and there's less compensation for him.

I cant see how the majority can agree. We are all biased for our club. I would suggest he picks it exactly as he sees it.

The sad part is that I miss the ilk of Dunstall and Lockett, bring back players of that type! Both were champs!
USELESS FACT: The WADA case against Essendon (in Sydney as well) is exactly 10 years to the day that Australia qualified for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

One played in the powerhouse teams of that era and had guys like Buckenara putting it down his throat every five minutes. The other played in some of the worst teams in AFL history, particularly in his early years. Don't get me wrong, Dunstall was good. It's just that Lockett was a lot better. There's no shame in that

Fairly grand statement there. So not a single fan can have an objective view ?plugger66 wrote:howlinwolf wrote:Sheehan is deliberately controversial.

I love the Saints but have always appreciated the best of the best whether they're in our jumper or not. Anyone who does not is torturing themselves.
Believe it or not there are people prepared to look at the bigger picture

That's a terrible top 50. Today's paper has the fans revised top 50 which is far far superior.I think Mike has finally lost it.

1 was a champion in a champion team and the other was a freak that only comes along every 50 years.
John Coleman was a freak & so is Plugger, history already only 15 years since they retired remembers Plugger as the greatest full forward and the superior footballer.
Plugger has 2 tangible things no other footballer has that ever played the game has:
1. AFL goal scoring record
2.Brownlow from Full forward.
