'Pride' match on the cards

Post: # 1534036Post Bluthy »

http://www.saints.com.au/news/2015-03-1 ... -the-cards
The NAB Challenge match between the Swans and the Dockers is the AFL's first match dedicated to celebrating sexual diversity and equality. The Saints have been working for the past six months on a proposal to host the first pride match for premiership points
Another good initiative. Lets lead in the race for the pink membership because its a growing market. And there is no more diverse sexuality on display than downtown St Kilda!

Is it true that our away strip will be tight leather shorts - one side red and the other black with a split in the middle?

The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.

Don't know about that WW..... I mustn't have much to do with my time.

I proudly signed up two gay friends of mine from Melbourne this morning on 3 game memberships. One was for his birthday present, the other was for his decision to become an Australian Citizen on Australia Day.

Even tho they haven't been that interested in AFL Footy they were impressed with Saints players marching in the Pride March in 2014 and then again this year 2015 with the Club officially marching.

They thought it was a hoot me signing them up, but since that early morning sign up.................. all of a sudden they have got interested in the Saints and hopped on the Saints web site where they read of the Saints pushing for a Pride Match and lo and behold they are telling me they are intending to upgrade their membership, if that helps the Club. And the important thing is............... there are a few of their friends that are now expressing interest in joining the Saints because of their supporting stand.

Pink money for the Club is as good as any other IMHO................................. and I'm sure you would be aware, there have been members (or even those more closely associated with the Club than just members) over the years whose money comes from dubious sources and is well laundered!! If dirty money and some despicable characters can be members of our Club over the years why not chase members of the Gay scene who have may have more integrity? Who cares about their sexuality? Not me! :P :P

Gays generally don't have the expenses of kids and have a decent disposable income. Go for the pink dollar I say, we need as much money as we can get.

We should be doing this because it is the right thing to do not for the money not for the members, just because the club represents all members of our community and St Kilda the suburb and the club have long been a haven for diversity. I for one am very happy the club is embracing this concept there is no downside as far as I can see.

We should be thinking along the lines of this club:

We should celebrate what is different about our club not try and become Hawthorn

Totally agree with everything you wrote. We've even got a fair bit of "gay" history, with former number one ticket holders in Molly Meldrum and Graham Kennedy. IMHO there are just other things that deserve attention. Just sayin......

Sounds entirely pragmatic - not that I think that's a bad thing. Whatever edge we can get...

I think it's a good thing and I think it's entirely consistent with our efforts to once again embrace the suburb we were born in and take our name from.

Thanks for that link 'Pleasing'.................. St Pauli FC sure has a rich history........ some similarities to our St Club....... one being they even had to rattle the tins to keep their club afloat too. If the Saints are looking for international clubs to align with........... St Pauli could be one. Let the Saints admin know about St Pauli, Pleasing.

I know there has previously been discussion along this line at Board level. Seems they have a few hurdles to overcome with AFL and various rights, sponsorship deals etc before our clubs can have an alignment with other international codes/clubs .....but it is bubbling away in the background.

St. Pauli is the red light district of Hamburg where the young Beatles honed their musical talent!

If it was good enough for John, Paul, George, Stu and Pete, it's good enough for the Sainters!

"Kult" phenomenon

It was in the mid-1980s that St. Pauli's transition from a traditional club into a "Kult" club began. The club was also able to turn the location of its ground in the dock area part of town, near Hamburg's famous Reeperbahn — centre of the city's night life and its red-light district — to its advantage. An alternative fan scene emerged, built around left-leaning politics, social activism and the event and party atmosphere of the club's matches. Supporters adopted the skull and crossbones as their own unofficial emblem. St. Pauli became the first team in Germany to officially ban right-wing nationalist activities and displays in its stadium in an era when fascist-inspired football hooliganism threatened the game across Europe.[5] In 1981, the team was averaging crowds of only 1,600 spectators: by the late 1990s they were frequently selling out their entire 20,000-capacity ground.[citation needed]

The Skull and Crossbones symbol had always been associated with St Pauli (the city quarter) in one way or another. Hamburg fostered the most famous pirate of Germany, Klaus Störtebeker and the symbol had been used by the house occupants at Hafenstrasse; but the one who should be credited with finally bringing the symbol to the terraces is probably Doc Mabuse, the singer of a Hamburg punk band. As the legend tells, he first grabbed the flag from a stall while passing drunk through the Dom on his way to the Millerntor-Stadion.[6]

In the early 1990s, the media in Germany recognized the Kult-image of the club, focusing on the punk part of the fan-base in TV broadcasts of the matches. By this time, the media also started to establish nicknames like "Freibeuter der Liga" ("Buccaneers of the League"") as well as "das Freudenhaus der Liga" ("Brothel of the League", literally "House of Joy").
Before some on here freak out  this is the concept (as distinct from the specifics) that I and others have been talking about. Leveraging off what we have and none of the vanilla clubs have... the wondrously unique famous suburb of our birth... funky town.

We can create our own version of the Kult.

We can be the cool cult club of the AFL... and to both local and visiting foreign sporting fans... and to sponsors... that is uber marketable. 8-)

I always thought that would be a good angle for the saints. They struggle with identity and the red light district and edginess is as good as anything. Bad ass club sounds alright. Don't mind the acceptance of anyone being promoted by the way.
