White Winmar wrote:Like all narcissists, P66, he had a superficial charm. Intoxicated the younger players with it, but some of the older players weren't fooled. As for his salary, he negotiated it with the board. Was paid way over what he was worth as a rookie coach. Remember this is the man who along with RB, told us he was the best man for the job, even after an "exhaustive search" for the best candidate, which he later acknowledged was a sham and a lie. Please don't rewrite history. The bloke is a narcissist, liar and limited egotist.
I had plenty to do with him and he always struck me as smarmy and shallow. Rooy and Lenny were youngsters. Ask Banger, especially Andrew Thompson and Burkey as to what they though of him. Mature men, who were not fooled by his bulls*** and rhetoric. I can only wonder what we might have achieved with a competent coach.
I don't think Rooy is now a young man. He is smart enough to see what GT is like. And I believe Banger liked GT. No idea about Thompson and Burke but Im sure like nearly everyone people dislike and like others. Aaron Hamill and Fraser Gehrig got on well with GT and they were a little older. No one but the board can be blamed for GT salary. Certainly not GT. A strong board would have given him less or not appointed him if he wasn't right for the job. And im not rewriting history. Which part is rewriting? There are plenty on here who would rate GT above RL. Im certainly not one of them but knowing what I know about SW I only have to go back one coach to find someone worse that GT.
I know its only one person but Patrick Smith who I think absolutely doesn't rate GT as a person did give him coach of the year one particular year. That suggests he thought he could coach.
We're all entitled to an opinion and I'm sticking to mine based on first hand experience and the fact that no other AFL related entity has gone near him with a barge pole.
I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!

Failure to even make a GF with the list he had, sealed his reputation as one of the worst coaches, not just in our history, but that of the competition overall. He should never show his face at our club again.
Wow, and I thought Barks4eva was the expert at GT bashing.
It's not "GT bashing", Sainternist. They are the facts. That selfish, lying narcissist cost us our best chance for a flag in the past forty years. He deserves nothing but contempt. He should also pay back the "overs" he paid himself during his "reign".
Why are you so bitter about GT? It has been almost nine years since he was sacked. What about that guy who was hired after him? For mine, 2009 was our best chance at a flag since 1971.
Curb your enthusiasm - you’re a St.Kilda supporter!!

I didn't say you weren't entitled to your opinion but if you post it on here and others don't agree and give reasonable reasons why then surely that's also ok. My experiences aren't first hand but they are very trusted IMO. By the way I don't think GT had any interest in coaching after us considering the salary I think he maybe on now.

Not bitter, Sainternist, just putting out there. I believe he had a much better team than RL. As we used to say in the coppers, move along now, nothing to see here!

I'm starting to worry about you, P66. This is another thread in which you seem to be unusually reasonable. What's going on?

Sure, but I think you're forgetting that GT played a big part in the rebuild after 2000, which then lead to the club having one of its most competitive decades ever.

Ahhhhhhhhhh you have to love this club, and you have to love its supporters. It would appear that the whole "Moorabbin/Seaford" affair became a fiasco (I KNOW! the bleeding obvious, but bear with me) the reasons for, and the persons who caused it, are now departed from the scene. There could be a chance that Moorabbin could be the viable option for our HQ. However, I have to ask, just how long have we been at Seaford? It seems that rather than seeking SOLUTIONS to the (acknowledged) teething troubles there, some folk want us to start the ball rolling on ANOTHER "venture" (Junction Oval) where we are neither wanted by Cricket Victoria nor supported by the State Government. In my humble opinion THERE lies the root of the matter, SOME folk have not got the ticker to see something through and MAKE IT WORK, but instead go off on tangents such as this pantomime with JO and CV. IF Seaford is to be abandoned/left then we stand to be left even further behind in getting our club right ON THE FIELD! rant over!

People do forget that GT and RB got a floundering club back on the tracks and indeed set up one of our most successful periods, and GT was one or two players short of going all the way. We need to to start winning games and being competitive in 2015, and people will come on board no matter where we hang our cap. At the same time, it is very important to market the club in a much more high profile way than we have- not only are we a sporting club, but also part of an entertainment business, and we need to base ourselves as an entity in a high profile marketing and entertainment environment if we want to stand a chance of attracting quality sponsors and a solid membership base.
GT did an incredible job for the Saints and had an incredible record for a guy with limited experience. He might be a turd and a narcissist but so were a lot of the better AFL coaches and players. He was taken down in a political manoeuvre because he wasn't playing ball with the board. In fighting and unprofessional conduct probably cost us along with the incredible concessions given to the Lions at that point in time. He wasn't a god or a spud just a guy who defied the system and nearly became a legend. He put the general AFL communities noses out of joint with his usurping of Blight and self appointment, never a good resume inclusion.
Fair comment for the most part Gringo. There was no bigger ego around than that of Blight. GT for all his flaws (and RB for that matter) helped take the club forward. (In my humble opinion of course)
Hi all,
My 2 cents on this: The Saints should not have left Moorabbin, a good, central (ish) suburban location and (I’m sure this crew knows more than me) but apparently the Saints left on bad terms with Kingston City Council, which is not good.
The Saints should be setting itself up as the club where the majority of its supporter pool is from St Kilda Junction “heading south”, out to Dandenong/Cranbourne, and including the Peninsula. Why Hawthorn tries to claim the outer eastern suburbs, and out to Gippsland (besides the old recruiting zones) makes me laugh.
That’s my take, thanks for allowing me to comment.
USELESS FACT: The WADA case against Essendon (in Sydney as well) is exactly 10 years to the day that Australia qualified for the 2006 FIFA World Cup.
Thankfully the two people who seem - (I stress "seem", we've been lead down too many garden paths before) - to be aware of this are Gillon McLaughlin and Matt FInnis.
I want a main base, capable of hosting VFL games, and a secondary base capable of hosting training. I hope Moorabbin is the former and the Junction is the latter.
We ought to have links with both of our homes. Symbolism should be important to us.

But where was this talk of the JO back when we trained at Moorabbin. I doubt it was ever brought up so I don't understand why it is brought up now.
When we win our next premiership, where would people want the players to bring the cup back to on the Sunday, to celebrate with the supporters, Seaford or Moorabbin or somewhere else?
I gather that was in response to me but if it was the comment totally irrelevant. Where was this talk when we trained at Moorabbin. Why all of a sudden do we need 2 grounds when it seems we cant handle one. Lets just go back to Moorabbin if for some strange reason we have to leave Seaford. At least we know we have a lease at Moorabbin and unless we are being lied to then 11 million dollars is being spent there. We need to convince the people in power to spend another 10 million. Or lets just stay where we are.
It appears the club doesn't even regard Seaford as it's home.
I was passing that way yesterday and dropped in - only my second visit, the first being a pre season intra club game last year on a stinking hot day.
My reason was to pick up a Saints top for a family present.
There was only one free spot in the car park.
Then I marched in past the Doc's portrait and asked the receptionist where the merchandise shop is - to be told ...
"We don't sell merchandise here - you will have to go to Moorabbin" !!!!!!!
Clearly the club has never embraced the Seaford experience.
No wonder the players and supporters have rejected it as well.
What a JOKE !!
The rest of Australia can wander mask-free, socialise, eat out, no curfews, no zoning, no police rings of steel, no illogical inconsistent rules.
They can even WATCH LIVE FOOTY!
Enrico - if you had followed the information the Club has consistently put out there you would be aware that the Merchandise was still at Moorabbin- that's just a head in the sand comment and action.
BTW_ according to the CEO_ Elsternwick Park had NEVER been mentioned, discussed or thought of.
The Run Home @TheRunHome
Matt Finnis on the Elsternwick rumours: "There's been no conversation about Elsternwick Park at all."
I spoke to Farren Ray at the sponsor announcement this morning and he was keen on coming home to St Kilda. He said Elsternwick would be okay too. He said facilities at Seaford are great but isolated and was pumped we were moving VFL back to Moorabin in the future and said Matt Finnis was going flat out getting us back to Junction. He is a really nice guy Faz and the club definitely has recruited excellent characters recently with top marks going to Paddy Mc, Hickey, Lee, Payne, Saad and Steven. All are really genuine good guys.
