Totally neutral.
Nothing ever happens in trade week. Every year its the same bluster froth and bubble with little movement.

Clubs fortunes are made and lost at the draft.

All that matters is we MUST NAIL at least two of 1, 21, 22.

Three is an unlikely bonus (we also have 41) but we simply MUST get two good players in this years draft. Either way we need 3 from (4 picks + Membrey) to be good. So 3/5 MUST BE GOOD for us to improve.

Only one good player from those five chances will be a massive FAIL. Two will also not be enough to shift us upwards.

Remember the top 4 in our B & F were 30+ so we need two new good players a year just to break even and not go backwards.

A pass, but maybe a credit if we pickup Membrey in the pre season draft or as a delisted free agent.
We only traded out Stanley and pick 60 (a pick we would not have used) to get pick 21 so we certainly did not go backwards.
We can't be judged a fail.

But if you wish to be premiers, passes and credits don't get you there.
You need to be consistently getting distinctions and high distinctions.

Only my opinion, but anyone who says we failed are kidding themselves.
Went into draft looking for a 3rd pick inside our second. We did this by trading out the ever 'developing' Stanley.
Said we'd trade #1 if offered something stupid. It wasn't offered, so we still have the #1 pick.
Will get Membrey in PSD.
Did we really want 19yo Boyd at $1.14m a year for years 2-7?

I thought i was above average, went in with a plan with 3 first round picks, which we now have, including pick #1.

Fairly pleased with it, lets see who slides to 21 and 22.

All credit for getting us into a position to do something amazing.
Things like that can't work every time.

But it didn't work this time.
And Stanley is, on balance, a loss.

So: Fail.

(It will be fantasic getting Petracca. We just didn't improve on what we already had.)

If we unearth the next Dunstan at 21 and Stanley gets delisted in 2 years, is it a win?

The point is that you can't judge whether our trade period is a pass or fail until you see what our recruiting is like. For instance, last year many on here wrote that we lost out big time in the McEvoy trade, but having seen Dunstan and Savage, all of a sudden we are the big winners....

The other point to remember is that GWS have to reduce the size of their list, and there is no way they can hold on to all the players drafted with #4, #6 and #7, in addition to the guys currently on their list. We are essentially allowing them to do the hard work for us over the next couple of years, find out who is any good, and then we can entice more GWS players to come to the Saints...

No because we did no trading to get Petracca. We win because we didn't f$# up. If Rhys is great at geelong ours will want to be a super mega gun or we will rate the big guy higher.

Really? McEvoy last year was huge… dealing Stanley after 6 years development was pretty big.

Then Beams, Griffen, Boyd, Ryder, Varcoe, Christensen, Lumumba, Clark, Greenwood, were big trades.

I'm not sure what people were expecting from us… we set a high price on pick 1 and it didn't come.

I'm f****** glad we didn't trade in Hunt, Shoemaker or any other spuds.

Membrey will come to us for free.

I think we've done okay, improved our draft position & added a decent medium forward.

Clubs pretty happy. Don't believe all the hype of GWS trading picks 4,6,7 for pick 1. We would have liked Jaksch but Membrey is a bonus. Elshaugh and the boys are pretty confident in the draft. Remember this isn't a quick fix, the resigning of all the young kids is in line to when we peak again. It's OK Sainters.

Just like we did this year, 'ey??? All those young guns were really smashing down the doors to get into a Saints jumper.

This is why we failed. Regardless of what we did with Pick 1, there were players available who would have helped our rebuild, and even with our very empty salary cap, we couldn't land a single one.

And a guy who was Pick 47 and has played one game doesn't count as a young gun.

I'm just glad we didn't get bullied into giving pick 1 for less than we were asking. Seems the period is nuetral, no fail or win.

They did say they would be active but can't force trades on other clubs, I do believe we would have traded more if gws had pick 3 though.

Traded Stanley, after trading McEvoy. Yeah that will work out well...

Actually, maybe its actually a win!
At least we dont have multiple picks in the top ten to f*** up.
With the idiots running the assylum at Seaford with its past history of trading we probably would have ended up with a couple of Roden's and half a slab of Crownies.
fair comment mate...

I say pass.

I liked that we didnt panic and do something stupid. If we had traded 1 for 6,7 (i was worried we might loose our nerve and do this) i would say fail.

But a strong pass for me. Especially if Petracca is holding a Norm Smith Medal in 5 years

IN: Petracca, Membrey, players picked at 21, 22, 41
OUT: Stanley

I don't really see how that leaves our list in worse shape going forward?

Agree with this.

We were and have been measured and calulated for two years now. I fully expect pick one again next year....and all going well we should get 19 as well.

Then there is that big man Jeremy....:)

Go to the draft with Pick 1. Win

Along with 21 and 22. Win

Didn't trade away any of our best 15 players. Win.

Missed out on Jacksh and O'Rourke. Loss.

Couldn't generate further top ten picks. Loss.

Pass.
Take away the fact that we got pick 1 for being bottom of the ladder what did we achiee in the trade period? Bugger all really other than exchange of a tall ruck/forward for pick 21 in a not so strong draft for a smaller forward yet to be accrued through other drafts. We cant keep relying on picks from poorer performance.

I thnk Saints player balance is worse than GWS balance meaning more time downunder.
Fail.

Midfield clearances and clear winners are needed to make an effective forward line.

PMSL

Why, because we didn't dish off the top pick for two low picks, seeing as that's the most that got offered to us ( thru the grapevine).???

Yeah I can see that as a fail
Not
Yeah I don't get the angst either. It's not like we weren't trying to cut a deal for pick 1 in either case.

We lost, what most people consider to be a spud in Stanley - to get a first round pick. Get Membrey, who will play lots of seniors with us for free & still get to take Petracca & 2 other decent players in/close enough to the first round - but keep whinging away if it helps.

I think it is a good thing that the club has recognised that Rhys isn't going to make it as a key forward.

Hopefully this will open the way for more natural footballers, perhaps White or Siposs, to grab the full forward spot.

We may be lacking in the second ruck department, but I'd prefer to have a proper spearhead.

Our lack of trading this year will almost guarantee pick 1 again next year. Win.

Of course it is, we haven't had 25 top 10 draft picks in the last 5 years.

We're not going to fix the list by trading in recycled spuds or giving away pick one for a couple of later picks.

How I assess Pass or Fail is what we did with our available picks, and did we improve on what we started with.

Using our PSD on a fringe player I do not regard as a win. That should be a bare minimum when you have first pick.

If we had of landed a name player with our PSD I would rate that a win.

Last year was a huge win.

This year it would seem how one rates, depends on how one rates Stanley.
