I live in the hope that one day I can see the Saints play with a ferocity and aggression similar to Hawthorn.

Sorry, you could not have been watching in 2009-2011. Our endeavour was the best in the AFL. It's the skill level of Hawthorn that is so much better than we were, particularly down to the 22nd player. We were lucky to get to 15. In the end, the skill duds lost it for us.ozrulestrace wrote:I live in the hope that one day I can see the Saints play with a ferocity and aggression similar to Hawthorn.

Don't worry I was watching the team in 2009-2011 and I recall how strong and aggressive the team was in those years.perfectionist wrote:Sorry, you could not have been watching in 2009-2011. But I sit here and I wonder if I'll ever have the opportunity to experience the joy those Hawthorn supporters are going through at the 'G?
At this stage I doubt it.

Spot on, great skills across the board is what makes that team so good.perfectionist wrote:Sorry, you could not have been watching in 2009-2011. Our endeavour was the best in the AFL. Re: Official Grand Final discussion thread
Why do I want to throw up just thinking about the Hawks winning the flag?

Because it only makes you remember 4 & 5 years back and think about what might have been, and what the sad sad situation we find ourselves in now and for quite a long time to come.

Think abut this.
Going into the 1971 GF, both the Hawks and the Saints had won one flag each.
Late in the 3rd quarter in that game, Saints were 28 points up. It was a close game but we know the result.
Since then, the Hawks have won 10 flag which equates to about 1 flag every four years. We know what we have achieved.
It's a great performance. Phenomenal actually. No wonder Dermie and Jase are such an arrogant pricks and talk about our club with such disdain.
All is not lost. We can learn a lot from the Hawks.

No thanks.SaintPav wrote: Think abut this.
McEvoy was the only good thing to come out of today - congrats to him.
Has there ever been a more over-rated player in the game than Rioli?, I would have liked to have seen Simpkin get a medal instead, Cyril was rubbish.
Re: Official Grand Final discussion thread
Cyril crying touched me.
Not his fault his body is stuffed, amongst all the love for Clarko, it's the biggest blight on his coaching career.
That young underdone body in his first year playing a full season + finals, he's cooked.

????????
The gamble everyone was talking about in the lead-up paid off. In his first afl game since round 15, Rioli started on the ground and twice made Tippett look silly – the first when he intercepted his handpass and gave it to Roughead for a goal, and the second when he bravely threw himself on the Swan's boot and again set up his forward line teammate for another. Subbed off in the fourth after a solid contribution and gleefully shed the red vest on the final siren.
More to do with the pressure then relief ..............was under the micro all week etc
biggest blight...........

Yes, we can learn from the Dawks, but there's only one reason why we haven't had a similar post-1971 history to theirs...
We were finally the power club we should always have been, and those flags would have come on a regular basis... but interest rates went through the roof in the mid 1970's, and we could no longer fund our debt on building-up the Moorabbin ground.
That's why we had to sell star players, had to let Graham Moss go (we had him signed on a Form 4 and he was coming to us), plummeted to the bottom for nearly 20 years, and nearly folded.
But somehow we kept Moorabbin.
Then, after all that, the likes of Archie Fraser (for whom I simply don't know any swear words strong enough ) moved us to the irrelevance of gawd-forsaken outer Seaford... and... allowed the bulldozers into Moorabbin to knock over all those decades of blood, sweat and tears.
I remain opposed to capital punishment, but if Sting's hanging tree was to play host to Archie... well, I'd look the other way.
But, and no thanks to that mongrel bastard, through opportunity of the Junction Oval and the return of the iconic club to its iconic suburb, we are being offered a second chance to finally become that power club that we should be, and for ~ten years from the early '60's to early 70's we finally were...
So yes, (yet a bit more) patience is required, but we will see a Dawk-esque run of Saintas flags... and it will make for so much better network viewing, showcasing the magnificent incomparable tri-colours in September, c/f that gawd-awful piss/poo skidmarks jumper.
Keep the faith Saintsationalists!

Re: Official Grand Final discussion thread
One stat that blew me away
Hawks kicked 418 goals this year. Next best 362 (Port)
Thats 3 more goals every game than the next best.
They really blew everyone away on the scoreboard all year.
So much for 'defence wins you flags'.
The Saints need to find many more avenues to goal. 'Kicking it to Roo' is not going to be even slightly adequate.

No..he is a 1 million dollar a year spud, a very over rated player, no wonder they went after Buddymullet wrote:Kurt Tippet is he really worth what they paid for him.
The Saints are under review, will it make any difference to the underachievers ?

Looked pretty good today. They only has 4 good players. Franklin, Jack, Goodes and Tippett.

Nah, can't agree pluggs.
Kurt had a poor game, can't teach timing etc, seems a project player still to me.
I reckon Kennedy gave his all, should get a mention.
