Re: The Pelican being looked at by Carlscum
His bloody-minded approach to accumulating youth is exactly the right approach for the club right now, although the power he wields needs to be constantly monitored.
We need to make sure he does his job for the betterment of the club, not the betterment of his reputation or bottom line. That's my ongoing concern.
I'm skeptical about his long-term impact, but his short-term impact, list-wise, has been positive so far.
I'd at least like him to stay for another year because I think he's a fairly shrewd dealer at trade week. A lot of coaches get blindsided by high-price quick-fixes during this period, whereas he doesn't.

He made a promise to Jeans on his death bed.
Would be very disappointed if he walked away from that.

That promise was very strange. He wasn't even employed by us. Wouldn't trust him with my mother in law but hope Im wrong.

Going to Carlscum would be a backward step for him. That was even mentioned in the article. The Pelican is a career man, and I fear if he moved to Carlton it would be a retrograde step. They are in a far worse state than we are.
I started with nothing and I've got most of it left!

i disagree....
"Pelchen is a divisive figure in football despite his reputation for helping build premiership lists at Port Adelaide and Hawthorn.
Only this year he was portrayed unfavourably by former Saints' coach Scott Watters, who was sacked in 2013 with 12 months remaining on his contract, after Pelchen was made the club's over-arching boss of football.
Watters told Channel Nine in July that he and Pelchen had "starkly different philosophies and … values". In lamenting the Saints' loss of "fabric players" Brendon Goddard, Nick Dal Santo and Ben McEvoy, Watters also said: "The final decision on who stays on the list is not the head coach's", and described the result as "dispiriting" for the players that remained.
Dermott Brereton – a former Hawthorn director, champion player and friend of Watters – has described Pelchen as a football "myth".

Well he did sack his mate, so Dermott isn't the most reliable source of information. He's kinda conflicted.stinger wrote:evertonfc wrote:His bloody-minded approach to accumulating youth is exactly the right approach for the club right now, although the power he wields needs to be constantly monitored.

To me the only way his betterment can come about is by the clubs betterment. If he screws us up his reputation is trashed. I'm probably the opposite to you in that his short term looks bleak but he is building a potential dynasty by wrecking our current list. I think he demands unfettered control of the list but the way we are going about it will bring reward. I think we need to be a powerhouse in 4 years not a struggling middler. This is the only way to really do it.

Re: The Pelican being looked at by Carlscum
In 4 years we shall only be really starting to compete as a genuine finalist.
He has gathering a generation of players that are solid B graders as a base. This gives us list depth moving forward. Some will end up A graders. Some C graders.
This step is essential as you need 36 experienced AFL players on your list capable of playing their role in a genuine Premiership assault.
Now he is adding the cream. 3 quality kids a year for 3 years. Future A graders. As we climb the ladder we shall have less access to top picks.
If this year was 2001 in our cycle (the first year we had a bunch real quality kids recruited in and playing) , it is not until they hit their peak that we will really contend.
The problem with the 2018 theory is we don't have the foundation of mature stars that will be around for the 2004 / 5 style assult on the premiership - 4 or five years later.
To achieve that we ae going to need to use free agency and other methods to gain experienced quality players to our list for season 2017 and 2018
But then those players have to gel.
2018 is possible, but 2020 onwards looks more likely to me. Although by 2018 we shall be top 8 and perhaps even top 4.
Our strategy can best be summarised as follows:
For 2012 draft in solid citizens (and give them experience)
For 2013 draft in solid citizens (and give them experience)
For 2014 draft in quality kids and trade to fill holes (get games into kids)
For 2015 draft in quality kids (get games into kids) --> subject to the Essendope outcome a recruiting opportunity may arise for quality that would be available in 2017
For 2016 draft in quality kids (get games into kids) - NOTE: possibly Riewoldt's last year
For 2017 draft in quality kids + free agency stars with banked salary cap $s (see below)
For 2018 keep going to the draft for long term success + free agency stars (multiple stars) wanting to come to a premiership contender
2019 onwards - go the draft and bring in the best quality kids we can to keep refreshing our list and avoid the mistakes of the past trading draft picks for mid-aged B and C grade role players.
The 2016 season should be used to bank our salary cap to allow us the chance to bid high for free agents in 2017. The AFL now allows clubs to pay under 95% and they can bank these dollars to be used in future years. I believe that the Western Bulldogs are doing this (spending well under their salary cap) next year for an assault on free agency for the 2016 season. We are a year behind in our re-build. http://www.afl.com.au/news/2014-06-04/s ... pend-later

Re: The Pelican being looked at by Carlscum
fair to say the Saints were into Pelchen well before he signed with us so its also fair to say before Yabby died Pelch was in the process of deciding on if he would take up the St Kilda job or not ... its not beyond reason that Pelch asked Jeans who was somewhat of a mentor for many many people within footy circles what his opinion was on him taking up the saints job ...plugger66 wrote:Enrico_Misso wrote:He made a promise to Jeans on his death bed.

would be a very strange thing for someone to lie about so i would take Pelchen on his word that it happened

You can never pay under 95% of the SC. You can bank the 5% difference and then use it in the following year.

Re: The Pelican being looked at by Carlscum
I don't see Pelchin as doing anything other in a football club than the bleedin' obvious as far as assembling talent for possible development, and if he goes he goes. It takes a whole lot more than a Pelchin to get a club up and competitive and I would be more concerned about the ability of AR to take the playing group to the next step, so for him and if still there, Pelchin, 2015 is going to be the make or break.
