Ben Cavarra
OK here's the smokey for the upcoming national or rookie draft. He has been talked about previously by some on here, but we simply can't ignore his VFL form.
Ban Cavarra absolutely dominated the TAC cup - joint winner of the Morish medal and BOG in a winning grand final side alongside the likes of Honeychurch, Boyd and Patracca. Also made VIC Metro side etc.. but overlooked last draft.
He is dominating for Frankston in the VFL.
http://www.sportingpulse.com/team_info. ... =193630626
In 11 VFL games, he has been BOG 3 times and 2nd BOG 4 times. And he has not featured in Frankston's best players on only 1 occasion this year.
The knock on him was his height - at 173cm. He has all the other attributes, tough, quick, kicks goals, great contested ball winner. There were also some doubts over kicking efficiency. But the reports are that this has improved.
A work friend knows his family and says that his dedication to make AFL is paramount. Supremely disciplined with diet and fitness, doesnt drink etc..
Now, Im not saying he is a certainty to be a star, but such is his determination that he is deserving of at least a rookie spot IMO.
I'd be very surprised if he doesn't win the Liston trophy...
Has anyone on here watched any Frankston games this year to comment? Sandy played the early in the season..

Re: Ben Cavarra
Ben and his brother are best mates with my sons. His older brother is a mad saints fan and they are a great family. Ben is a great footballer, he reads the play well and is a ball magnet, he also has great skills and is super quick. He plays a bit like haneberry from the swans
his height is what prevented him from being drafted but I would have him at the saints in a heart beat. He is also a great leader

Re: Ben Cavarra
Previous little guy who won the Morrish and Liston went on to also win the Brownlow. Hopefully Cavarra is even better than Libba!

I like how his name is similar to Ben Gazarra. If we draft him, I hope he has style

Re: Ben Cavarra
Quick update on Ben Cavarra. Both the Saints and Essendon have met with him and his family in the last few weeks.
Ben averaged 22 disposals in his first season in the VFL but more impressively, laid 60 tackles. He also kicked 13 goals, he was also named in the VFL team of the year and the young guns team.

Re: Ben Cavarra
Isnt Brent Harvey about that height. He sounds like the type of midfielder we need to support Jack Stevens someone who can also use his pace and elusive skills to work out of congestions. Players like Armitage and Dunstan can win the ball in tight but are generally on the ground when they do it. They work so hard in and under they are slow to regain their footing and spread. It seems to leave us short of players to spread or defend when the ball comes out.
SAINTS another day older another day closer to the Holy Grail!

Bens 172cm so he is a bit taller than Harvey. He is super quick and has great skills on both sides. He is a great kid too, future leader

Re: Ben Cavarra
Out of interest how would he compare vs say a Tom Curren?
He sounds exciting.

Re: Ben Cavarra
He's quicker than Curran, better skills, just gets more of the ball.Con Gorozidis wrote:Out of interest how would he compare vs say a Tom Curren?

Re: Ben Cavarra
Does he have a right foot, didn't use it once on the highlights package and we already suffer with guys who haven't got both sides?
Re: Ben Cavarra
In fairness to Tom he also accumulated big stats at VFL level and has had a 'run with' role at AFL level which doesn't lend itself to big stats at this stage of his career.BringBackMadDog wrote:He's quicker than Curran, better skills, just gets more of the ball.Con Gorozidis wrote:Out of interest how would he compare vs say a Tom Curren?

Re: Ben Cavarra
Very true. If Curran was running around this year as an unlisted VFL player with the numbers he was getting, the whole forum would be demanding we rookie-list him at the very least.StJimmy wrote:In fairness to Tom he also accumulated big stats at VFL level and has had a 'run with' role at AFL level which doesn't lend itself to big stats at this stage of his career.BringBackMadDog wrote:He's quicker than Curran, better skills, just gets more of the ball.Con Gorozidis wrote:Out of interest how would he compare vs say a Tom Curren?

There is a big gap between AFL and VFL. Having said that, there is also a big gap between TAC Cup and VFL and Cavarra appears to have made that jump successfully, which indicates that he could take the next step too.
