We didnt get to bottom just by accident. It was a team effort.
if its a team effort to win a flag its also a team effort to win a spoon.
Absolutely.

I can't imagine that Fremantle will follow our path either, they are still taking kids with all their early picks, but need quality with their FA's.

I think they are bringing through some good young talent in Crozier, Neale, sutcliff... Ross has been pretty good for c pearce, Walters, ballantyne etc

Who cares I guess hey? So long as we pick the right kids.

Lyon is obsessed with pressure. 'Put them under pressure' is his mantra.

I'm of the belief that his players are so intent with the concept of players cracking when put under pressure - that they themselves crack when under pressure.

51% in finals.
That figure means little in isolation, all four teams this weekend had a 50% goal/point efficiency.

How are the other coaches in finals?

Quick question.
Hype aside. Has Lyon every actually evolved at all since 2005?

It seems he is trying to steadfastly and resolutely replicate the 2005 Swans flag.
His game plan and philosophy is cemented in that season and that win. Its cult like.
He is mentally strong, focussed and clear in his objectives- no doubt about that. But is he too inflexible and unwilling to change? Is his strength also his weakness?

Lyon got a few questions about Mcpharlin retiring at the presser and refused to talk about it. He said that it wasn't the appropriate time and he's learnt that in the past. Clearly a reference to retiring Eddy and Baker.

Looks like his future is sealed unless they both agree to part ways. Interesting to see if he tries to get out of this contract for 2015.

Although I was accused in this thread of apparently inventing the notion that Lyon was ever associated with the word 'genius' - I can confirm and re-iterate that he has been referred to as a 'genius' by the media since at least 2011. I certainly didn't make this up.

http://www.theage.com.au/afl/afl-news/b ... 1ewwy.html
Ross Lyon's tactical genius is acknowledged throughout the competition.
Anyone with half a brain (and/or takes notice of footy media) would know I did not invent or make up this idea or associate the word 'genius' with RL. It has been widely used for some time.

And he aint one.

But back on the thread topic - No doubt in my mind RL will try and get to the GC in 2015 or GWS in 2016 - despite his contract at Freo until 2017.

I also don't think Freo will hit rock bottom like us.

Walters, Fyfe, Sutcliff, Neale, Crozier all very good youngsters so at least they have a few. We didn't have a single good young player when Lyon left.

I think in his 8 years as senior coach he has only had 3 RS nominations.

Probably the first time you're ever been right.... It will be interesting.

Given that there's probably no chance of a clause in this contract.

You don't need a clause if its by mutual consent mate.

And I've been right plenty of times. Plenty. Wrong plenty as well. But pipe in and have a personal dig without making any contribution whatsoever to the actual topic. Nice of you.

Surely this wouldn't be uncommon for top 4 sides?

How many have hawthorn had in the past 3 years?

I dont want to be a pedant but they just finished 5th :D
Only kidding - that is the kind of technicality people use to 'score points' that really annoys me on here!

So I looked it up:

Since Lyon has been coaching (2007) - the Hawks have had 8 RS nominations.

In that same time RL has had 4.

In the last 3 years - Hawks - 2 Freo - 1

So while the Hawks have managed 2 (maybe 3) flags and another 3 pre-lims - they also managed twice as many RS noms as Lyon.

So you are right - it also tells us RL has inherited mature lists.
It probably also reflects our woeful recruiting during his tenure with us & that Clarkson isn't some kind of pied piper of young footballers.

If you get good enough kids they'll force their way into the side, but Ross clearly has had a preference for mature athletes to implement his high pressure game. Port have taken hard running to a new level, with superstar finishers on top, it's exciting for football... I've always hated port, but I love watching them play at the moment.

Blooming good and apt euphemism, stinger - and it also evokes "flawed/floored", which is a word I would also associate with RL.

Sorry I had to review and re-count (I made a mistake on that first count by reading the wrong column)

Hawks 2 RS in last 3 years
Freo 1

Hawks 8 in last 8 years
Lyon 4

So Clarkson is a pied piper and has 2 flags to show for it.
Lyon is a just a bloke who sticks by one team and one plan and squeezes the life out of it.
His 05 Swans suffocate plan is no longer up to standard.

...and if freo are top 2 next year I'm guessing people here will revert back to "he has the best list in comp" like they were last year.

Morabito, Johnson & ballantyne back fit and I reckon they trouble most sides... They still need to find a couple if players though.

Massive 'if'.

If he gets them back to top 2 - I will dip my lid and say hes a great coach. But I reckon they are in some strife.

Yeah it's unlikely you'd think - port look to seriously building.

Will you dip your lid to top 4?

Are Gold Coast going to explode next year?

Yep I'll dip my lid to top 4.

No idea about GC - still some ?? marks over McKenna. My gut feel is they will have an ordinary year and under-perform and then have a 'crisis'. Sack the coach and bring in a new coach for 2015 - then they may well explode.

If not the best then close to.
I still maintain they had a superior list to the Hawks, when they went down to them in the GF last year.
IMO, Freo's bottom 6 was clearly ahead of the Hawk's.

With Johnson, Ballantyne etc.. they will be an awesome line up again next year. Top 3 for sure.

Lyon is fast running out of excuses.

Also how much longer will the following be producing: Sam Mitchell, Brian Lake, Burgoyne all well into their 30's.
So if anything there's a greater need for the Hawks to go out and recruit.

Woke up this morning and after sleeping on it....

I am quite content that Lyon has failed again at Freo.

I have no love or respect for Lyon.

No genius.
