Re: Ross Lyon after today
This is where I take it you are directly comparing Lyon making a comment on a list in 2009 cherry ripe for a tilt at the flag and our current list.Johnny Member wrote:
I haven't compared lists at all. Not sure how you deduced that.
From what I gathered from Lyon's '4 year apprenticeship' comment (and I could be wrong because as I said I was puzzled by it) you don't get a game, or at best you don't get a regular game unless you've completed your 4 year apprenticeship.
So in our case, and quite a few other clubs' cases if the 4 year apprenticeship was in place, we'd hardly be able to field a team!
It would be literally impossible to apply this so called 4 year apprenticeship to a list like ours.
Anyway it is a moot point. L:yon is not the coach of our current list so there is no answer to how he would coach. Maybe you are suggesting he would only field a 10 player team from our current list?
I would think that Lyons approach may be different with a different list to the one he had in 2009/10, but who knows. Plugger66 did indicate that he did bring in a number of young players in 2011, but it was all too hard for him and he jumped to another list ripe to challenge.
Always has been my biggest criticism of Lyon that he has never developed a list, and if he fails at Freo, I would think the footy industry would be very wary of giving him another go, especially if Freo's list is left in as bad a state as ours was.
Mot sure, but after another season in 2015 he may want them for 2016Johnny Member wrote:What would he do at Gold Coast??
Sorry if you thought it was sarcastic JM, I thought it was pretty obvious that the so called apprenticeship would be different depending on the list. Didn't he mention that 5 + years ago? Football changes a lot in 5 years, maybe his views are different now and with a younger list he may modify his views.Johnny Member wrote:Or was your sarcastic reply suggesting that the 4 year apprenticeship would only apply to lists that are premiership contenders? If so, what do you base that on? Because I've never heard Lyon clarify what he meant.
Evidence suggests that he was modifying them in 2011 with the St.Kilda list.

Freo's list will never be in as a bad a state as ours as they have Chris Bond, as head of recruiting and from what i heard they don't let ross take over the recruiting of kids.

He has done well with guys like Tabener, Neale, Walters and Fyfe who have all come in and played regular footy in Ross' time. They have Tanner Smith and Apeness still to come in who are decent picks and if given development should take over a couple of spots that retirements should take up. We didn't seem to have any kind of plan.

Speaking of coaches and media hype.
whatever happened to dean laidley?
The media pumped up his tyres at one stage but the guy is/was an idiot.

Re: Ross Lyon after today
Working atm. Go to the last 8 or 9 minutes of the show. 2 commentators going for Lyon and 2 would prefer Hinkley as coach in a GF even though Ken hasn't coached Port into a GF. Says a lot about the fact that getting there doesn't mean jack in the end if you can't inspire your team to get over the line.Scollop wrote:Don't worry Luke Darcy and a lot of commentators love Rossy and don't forget Robert Walls. I think he was the first and probably the instigator of the legend of Lyon
There are increasing voices doubting the legend of Lyon. The soundcloud isn't working atm, but when they fix it, have a listen to today's discussion on SEN (should be updated later today - usually takes a while);
https://soundcloud.com/sen1116/pure-foo ... vid-king-2
The conversations regarding Lyon are now justifiably balanced and it's not only 'the bubble' or 'in the messiah we trust'. The vast majority of Saints supporters not only swallowed every single word of Lyonspeak but they had mantras to ward off evil spirits and heretics....
