It would be madness, Rhys has emerged and will be a gun.bergholt wrote:I tend to think no-one would pay much for Rhys Stanley.
That said, Adelaide just cut McKernan and Angus Graham, two big guys who can play ruck/forward. That leaves them with Jacobs as their sole ruckman. He's barely missed a game in four years so I suppose that might be enough for them but it doesn't look like they've got much backup. Can Jenkins can play in the ruck if desperately required? Apart from him Dangerfield and Sloane were next on their hitouts ladder this year.
So I wonder if Stanley might fit into their list? Adelaide currently have something like 9, 29, 48 and 66.
9 is too much. 29 is probably a stretch as well. How about we give them Stanley and 39 and get 29 in exchange?
Or maybe a straight swap for Jarryd Lyons? He's only played 22 games in four years, presumably they don't rate him too highly.

Some guys just have their cards stamped by fans. Gram, Raph, Dawson etc could play a blinder and people would remember the two sprayed kicks or an ill disciplined act. He will come out and kick 6 goals in a game next year and they will remember the 2 behinds.

Only true forward/ruck on our list. 23 year old about to hit his prime years. He's not elite, likely will never be, will continue to frustrate but is an important cog in our team. About as untradeable as anyone on our list and would take a massive offer to consider.

If we decide to choose Peter Wright (203cm forward/ruck) with our first pick then Rhys is surplus.Con Gorozidis wrote:Id take that Pick 9 from Adelaide and id probably take pick 13 from Port.
But would need to be overs.
Trade him to Port for pick 13 and take a midfielder in the draft.

I took it on board that I should judge him on what pick he was taken, I don't expect so much anymore.
Still lacks self belief & intensity, not sure he will ever have it.
Id trade him in a heart beat for a top 25 pick.
I don't think we could get that though.
Just can't see him getting the consistency required. I'm done with the self belief with him though, converting athletism to football sometimes just can't be done no matter how confident.

Re: Trading Rhys to Adelaide
Reckon Stanley is valuable, would rather keep him.
If you must trade him, insist on overs. Get a 1st round pick + a talanted midfielder.
He's one of our most valuable players...would be in demand in an open market

Tell me you are joking? A talented mid and a first rounder for a guy who has played about 5 good games. lets keep him because we wont get the value needed to part ways.

Re: Trading Rhys to Adelaide
I'm definitely not saying we should trade Rhys (unless we get offered overs for him) but we will need to trade out another ruckman in the next two years you would think. Note sure we need 5 on our list.

Well i have seen nothing at all to suggest any apart from Stanley can play mainly as a forward so he should be the last to go.

....I did say insist on overs.....just think he offers a lot of what many clubs want...fast...good kick for goal....good overhead....plays forward/ruck....and he's the type many think could develop into a superstar....plugger66 wrote:Toy Saint wrote:Reckon Stanley is valuable, would rather keep him.

Well why would we get rid of him then? i have no idea why you think clubs are stupidier than our club.

Re: Trading Rhys to Adelaide
I'm sure you're right, Con. Holmes and Pierce look to be developing nicely. Hickey is our current number 1. Longer is the one who is the one I'd be looking at. I thought he'd be better than he showed this year. I know he's young, but his inability to mark or get possessions around the ground counts against him. Having said that, he offers enough to a team that needs a presence at the stoppages. Trade him for a midfielder.Con Gorozidis wrote:I'm definitely not saying we should trade Rhys (unless we get offered overs for him) but we will need to trade out another ruckman in the next two years you would think. Re: Trading Rhys to Adelaide
Next year will be Rhys 7th season at the club.
Do people really think hes going to flick some magic switch and become a 'superstar'?
I think he can improve and be a solid contributor for sure - but the idea of him becoming a 'superstar' seems like a huge fantasy if you ask me.

I don't think he needs to be a superstar. Just a very consistent ruck forward. Geelong had a glut of okay tall forwards and it didn't hurt them. If he can hold his marks, gets a few hit outs and kicks a couple of goals a game he's good enough to own a place in the best 22.

Re: Trading Rhys to Adelaide
I agree with this. I remember how long it took Hawkins to really hit his straps - about 5 seasons. I'm not suggesting they're the same, but by god it would have to be a great trade for it to make sense to me at this stage.gringo wrote:Con Gorozidis wrote:Next year will be Rhys 7th season at the club.

I think you are agreeing with me. I have said all along all he only needs to be a solid contributor. I was responding to Toy Saint's post who mentioned the word 'superstar'.gringo wrote:Con Gorozidis wrote:Next year will be Rhys 7th season at the club.

There are still many on here who think there is going to be some magical metamorphosis. I am trying to say being a solid contributor is ok and to quash the 'superstar' fantasy.

The murder and weird, sex crime capital of Australia. Salman Rushdie once opened a writers' festival in Adelaide with this little gem. "Adelaide is a weird gothic town, given to weird gothic crimes". Not unexpectedly, he was never invited back.dragit wrote:churchesCon Gorozidis wrote:Rundle MallThe Redeemer wrote:What happens if Rhys does not want to go back to Adelaide?

- Ivan Maric became a very good player in his 7th season
- Luke Darcy didn't really hit his straps until his 7th or 8th season
- Darren Jolly wasn't much of a player behind Jeff White at Melbourne, it was his 7th or 8th season when he became good in Sydney
- Will Minson was a joke until his 8th or 9th season
- Mark Jamar was All-Australian in his 10th season on a list, the first five years of his career he wasn't close to AFL standard
- Ben Hudson was 25 when he made his debut and it took a couple more years for him to become a good player
I'm sure there's a bunch of others I can't remember.
I don't think Rhys is going to be as good as any of these guys but that's why it wouldn't be a surprise if he did take a big step forward and become a very good player.

Steph Martin was the king of the spuds until this year and now he's one of the form players of the comp. It can happen but if he is just solid I'm happy anyway.bergholt wrote:Arguing against myself here, but ruckmen can take a long time:Con Gorozidis wrote:Next year will be Rhys 7th season at the club.
