Our Grandstand. Saintsationalists' help needed.
One of the (no doubt) many details that will need to be sorted when combing the fine print over our return home...
How can one of our historic grandstands bear Kevin Murray's name???
Please don't get me wrong. I have nothing but admiration for former Fitzroy and VFL great, Kevin Murray.
However, Fitzroy only parked its gypsy-caravan of a club very very briefly at our Junction Oval.
Kevin himself no longer played for Fitzroy during that period...
We need a relevant St Kilda person's name to adorn that grandstand.
I was going to suggest one Keith Nugget Miller as perfect, except, he played District Cricket for South Melbourne, not St Kilda.
So Saintstaionalists, your help is needed to re-name our grandstand. Ta.

Gentle correction Dave. Bulldog Murray certainly did play for the Lions at the Junction Oval. His memorable punch-on with the Pascoe brothers early in 1970 (Fitzroy's first season at The Junction) gave me an indelible reminder how lucky he was to win the Brownlow the previous season!Dave McNamara wrote:One of the (no doubt) many details that will need to be sorted when combing the fine print over our return home...

Looks good doesn't it? I'm sure he played a bit of cricket sometimes at school.
Or how about recognising a club legend who grew up in Prahran?
The Jason Blake Stand
If we can't at least name a stand without the cricket folk getting involved then forget it, we're nobody's sub-tenant anymore.

Thanks for the correction Trev. (Gentle corrections are the best kind. )Trev from the Bush wrote:Gentle correction Dave. Bulldog Murray certainly did play for the Lions at the Junction Oval. Ok, as Trev correctly points out, Bulldog Murray did actually play home games for Fitzroy (RIP ) at our Junction Oval.
The rest of my post still stands though.

But we aren't going back to the junction oval, we will be using the Ian Johnson oval, Maybe name the new pavillion after a St.Kilda great. Trevor Barker maybe

From memory I'll say it was just before quarter time, and started when a Fitzroy player ?? sunk a boot in to a Saints player.

The new training oval could be called
The Baldock Jeans Oval
in honour of our 2 departed legends who both played there and who were in charge of us when we moved to Moorabbin and won our first premiership.
Like Sandringham is the Trevor Barker Beach Oval)

There is really only one valid name to go up on that grandstand. A name synonymous with good decision making and clear forward thinking.

Yep that would be good. dave can you tell me how training in the park outside the JO means there will be any footy at the JO especially as it seems this deal is designed to give CV its own ground and we are an add on so the AFL can tip in 10 million. Happy for any logically answers.

One short and very logical (part) of the answer to your concern, is that here in Melbs' cricket is not possible as an outdoors winter game...
There's a whole thread, but forgive my self indulgence, maybe you could start with this post...? viewtopic.php?f=1&t=86939&start=125#p1495321
On reflection, there are heaps of other postings on that thread from fellow Saintsationalist who IMHO have expressed far far more eloquently than I am able to, just how wonderful this news can be, and how game-changingly significant for our club.
Actually Pluggs, maybe start with reading the Caro article if you haven't had a chance yet. I only say that, as quite a few posts in said thread clearly show that peeps either haven't read, or have only briefly glanced at that article.
Pluggs, it may not happen overnight (as you know, patience, Rome, not built in a day, and all that...),
but I do very much look forward to standing in the outer at the Junction,
and discussing all things Ormond FC, KFC and Thai holiday escapes with you,
whilst watching our beloved Sainters playing an AFL game (pre-season first, no doubt) on our Junction Oval.
I also plan to take a picture of you to record that mighty event.
And yes, that pic shall be posted on here... so try to keep your clothes on, and don't forget to smile.

Re read the article just incase I missed something and it makes it clear there will be no footy at the JO. They have even moved OM's off the ground. I understand cricket is a summer sport. I also understand CV will control the ground and there will be no removal of the pitches in winter and CV will not want footy on the ground to wreck the pitches and because it is CV home ground I doubt even a practice match will be played there. Our new training base is opposite the JO, if it happens, and not the JO. As I have said previously whilst humans run earth there will be no home and away footy at the JO. Now again I ask logically how we could play footy at the ground. Logic not this rome wasnt vbuilt in a day stuff.

No removal of pitches? They always used to be just covered over, and it worked fine. Is the Juctional Oval pitch currently known to have problems? I ask, coz from time to time footy matches are currently played on it. Cricket grounds all around Oz have always shared with various winter codes, and the pitches have come up just fine to then be used next cricket season.
(Not forgetting that Aussie Rules as we know it was originally devised to keep the cricketers fit over winter.)
I'm not seeing an insurmountable issue. I am though seeing major, major synergies for all the sporting bodies involved though.
Are you suggesting that all that money is going to be poured into the site... for it to then sit largely unused for half the year...?
That would not be a logical use of said $$$, nor a logical use of the revamped venue.

Pretty sure it makes it clear there will no footy at the ground as OM are moving from the ground. Dave you need to stop thinking in the 60's. What AFL grounds now have cricket pitches? What cricketers now only train or play for 6 months? What footy grounds have mainly standing room? Geelomg and the governement have spent many millions on making the ground bugger all bigger attendance wise but confortable for all the crowd. Time for forget that silly dream unless you can come up with logic for spending 200 million on a ground that will play 2 games a year because it would only ever hold 15k at the most. It will not happen whilst humans run this place.

I thought you said that yo re-read the article Pluggs? Can you show us the part where it says there will be no footy at the Junction Oval?plugger66 wrote:Pretty sure it makes it clear there will no footy at the ground as OM are moving from the ground.
Ummmm...? SCG, MCG, GABBA, Adelaide Oval, Bellreive, Manuka, York Park, the NT grounds, Kardinia Park...?plugger66 wrote: Dave you need to stop thinking in the 60's. What AFL grounds now have cricket pitches?
And whilst not (yet) an AFL ground, Pluggs... footy games are still played on the Junction Oval.
I haven't heard that the pitch there is minefield to bat on(?)
The vast, vast majority I would have thought.plugger66 wrote:What cricketers now only train or play for 6 months?
And if you are talking about playing (as distinct from training) in Melbs', then I would say, all of them.
(Ok, the Sri Lankans at Silverton excepted. )
Well, there's the one you and Mart watch Sandy games at... TBBO.plugger66 wrote:What footy grounds have mainly standing room?
On Saturday at Vic Park, I noticed many, many people, and of all ages, happily watching the footy... standing.
And as recently as last decade... Kardinia Park.
Again Pluggs, I thought you re-read that article(?)plugger66 wrote:Geelomg and the governement have spent many millions on making the ground bugger all bigger attendance wise but confortable for all the crowd. It said quite clearly that once completed (possibly as soon as 2016) the capacity would be 40,000.
Humans are running this place less and less all the time. It's called the modern world Pluggs. We aren't in the 60's any more.plugger66 wrote:It will not happen whilst humans run this place.

Re: Our Grandstand. Saintsationalists' help needed.
Ok, the article actually said by hopefully 2016, six (or was it seven?) thousand, not 140,000. (Did I make you look? )plugger66 wrote:Geelomg and the governement have spent many millions on making the ground bugger all bigger attendance wise but confortable for all the crowd. But that is actually the point Pluggs.
That cricket capacity would already be fine to accommodate a pre-season type game footy crowd of easily twice that against one of the AFL's recent creations.
That's way ahead of any schedule I was hoping for.
PS: Pluggs, who is/are Geelomg? I'm guessing you mean the Hillbillies(?), but I could be wrong.
