But to be honest 98 just wasn't a great draft year. The best players from that draft are some combination of Hayes, Fevola, J Bolton, Kirk, C Bolton, Embley, Scotland, M McVeigh, Stenglein, B Rawlings, Baker, J Carr, Wojcinski, Simmonds, Grover, Burton... Not a lot of class or superstars there. No Brownlows, no Rising Stars, only four of them were ever All-Australian.
97 was Goodes, Black, Scarlett, Power, Tarrant, C Cornes etc. 99 was Pavlich, Cox, Milne, Corey, Chapman, Enright, O'Keefe, Glass, Murphy etc. 98 despite our Lenny just doesn't stand up very well in hindsight.

A lot more homework is invested in the draft these days i believe.kosifantutti wrote:The last wooden spoon team to go on and win a flag at any time in the future was Collingwood 1999. It only took them 11 years and I don't think Josh Fraser had much to do with it.

I guess that explains all the success melbourne and Carlton have had.jamesmc wrote:A lot more homework is invested in the draft these days i believe.kosifantutti wrote:The last wooden spoon team to go on and win a flag at any time in the future was Collingwood 1999. I do but he was playing in a really uncompetitive team until the freo game, his only highlights are from the games that we were competitive so we'll have to wait and see in the future, he'll probably become a good mid instead of fwddragit wrote:You don't rate billings?

He kicked 5 on debut against us in our first game ever at Colonial Stadium. Just in case that ever comes up at a trivia night.

Yes it's unusual that a saints fan would rate Kelly, Aish & Bontempelli as the best of the top 10 ahead of Billings.Bunk_Moreland wrote:won his rising star nomination in a 5 goal lose to WCEsainters85 wrote:I do but he was playing in a really uncompetitive team until the freo game, his only highlights are from the games that we were competitive so we'll have to wait and see in the future, he'll probably become a good mid instead of fwddragit wrote:You don't rate billings?
Billings playing in the worst side is even or ahead on most meaningful stats… tackles is the only area he is down.
Below doesn't show disp efficiency of 70% and 0.8 goal assists per match… well ahead of the others.

Was able to get a game in the all conquering Lions team and played in the 02 flag. Very good skilful player ( I was a Lions member from 99-01 so saw a fair bit of him.thejiggingsaint wrote:Gee Dessie Headland! What a gun!
But then he went home crying to momma in Freo and it all went downhill after that. As it would playing with basket cases

Re: We probably won't get the No.1 Pick
Freo went hard to get him they offered him really good money and a spot in the leadership group (from memory a gig on TV was also talked about)... once he got home to Perth he became lazy and complacent he would walk into the dockers best 22 just by showing up unlike where he had to bust his nut to get into the lions side .... towards the end of his playing days he went a little bit crazy and changed his style to be a more dirty player (prob cause he wasnt as quick or fit as he once was so he turned to the niggle) ... his brain snap at selwood was the pinicle to this ... Selwood gave him lip saying he slept with that girl tattooed on his arm problem was it was a tat of Deszys daughter ...stevie wrote:Was able to get a game in the all conquering Lions team and played in the 02 flag. Wow a player wanted to go home. Why would that make him a sook. I hope all those that think that about players have experience as a person who left their family and friends at a young age. Im 52 and still havent left my family and friends.

Des left for money ... not home sick or anything like that... the offer he got from Freo made it impossible to stay in Bris (who at the time were in strife trying to fit all their stars in the cap ...)

I'll give you Riewoldt but we didn't get Goddard for finishing on the bottom. Carlton should have picked him (and Wells) up with picks 1&2.dragit wrote:I doubt we'd have made the grand final in 09, 10 without Riewoldt & Goddard... Just sayn'

Was Des Headland the player with that really hot chick tatooed on his arm?

Was a doco made about the 98 draft with Headland, Ramanaskus and Fevola (I think).
Des was told he was going to be picked No.1 by Brisbane, but really didn't want to go. Went as far as wearing a Dockers jersey to the Brisbane interview (think Freo had selection No.2?)
Alway wanted to go home, so was lucky. Got a flag at brisbane then played with Freo, which was always his choice.

We're talking about pick #1, which Goddard was… the technicality behind why we got pick #1 is irrelevant.Life Long Saint wrote:I'll give you Riewoldt but we didn't get Goddard for finishing on the bottom. Don't reckon it is...The poser put forward was the last team to win the spoon and premiership within a reasonable timeframe.dragit wrote:We're talking about pick #1, which Goddard was… the technicality behind why we got pick #1 is irrelevant.Life Long Saint wrote:I'll give you Riewoldt but we didn't get Goddard for finishing on the bottom. We didn't win the spoon to get Goddard.
FWIW, I agree with the sentiments of your post. We should have won a premiership in one of those years and we certainly would not have made the GF in either of those years without Riewoldt.
