We probably won't get the No.1 Pick
I dont see us getting the number 1 pick this season.. hate to see the saints win another wooden spoon anyway. GWS will probably scoop it as we could probably beat the suns and the doggies, doesn't really matter tho aslong as its a top 10 pick. Marcus Bontempellii wasn't even pick 1, or 2, or even 3 and he probably was the best out of the top 10 along with kelly and aish.

Re: We probably won't get the No.1 Pick
We've won one game in 3 months and are on the bottom, i'd say we're still a fair chance for pick one.
It was a great win last week, but we are still a very ordinary side.

Yep if it is GWS last, then they won't take kp player.....unless they trade 4 or 5 out

Re: We probably won't get the No.1 Pick
Watched the replay of the Freo game straight after the Pies v Crows game and although we won confortably the speed and intensity was much greater in the Adelaide game! It was a good win but I wouldnt be putting too much on us to beat GCS or any other teams this year...

We will win Lenny tribute game that's about it - depends what GWS have in front of them
We've worked so hard this year......be a shame now to let no 1 slip through our fingers now.... (Before the do gooders come with "we wanna win every game.... ".....blah blah blah - spare me I care less. I want THE FIRST choice at the best kid in the land as that's our best chance of building a side that can challenge....

Winning Round 20 2014 to avoid the wooden spoon - who cares?
Losing the 2019 Grand Final by a goal - DISASTER
... But let's just reverse that ...
Losing Round 20 2014 and being condemned to the wooden spoon - who cares?
Picking up the #1 pick gives us access to the best young key forward in the land.
2019 Grand Final we win by a goal with that key forward kicking 5 - EUPHORIA
What's it to be ...
DISASTER or EUPHORIA ?

Looking forward to seeing a list of all those Premiership teams who won the flag based on a game they lost four years earlier.

The last wooden spoon team to go on and win a flag at any time in the future was Collingwood 1999. It only took them 11 years and I don't think Josh Fraser had much to do with it.

Very, very good post. A few wins to end the year would be great for us.kosifantutti wrote:The last wooden spoon team to go on and win a flag at any time in the future was Collingwood 1999. It only took them 11 years and I don't think Josh Fraser had much to do with it.

Sounds impressive. What about the other way. saints win 2 in a row. Young kids learn to win and they like it and come in with a better attitude next season and also pick 2 ends up being the best player in the draft. I like it.

Judd IMO and yep pick 2 didnt work out because of mainly injury. Not sure it proves much though. Do you want to beat GC this week?

Re: We probably won't get the No.1 Pick
Hodge has had less from the highlight reel but probably on overall out put I would take Hodge who has had season after season of high level footy. Judd had about 4 outstanding years.plugger66 wrote:Bunk_Moreland wrote:Who was the best out of

Funny what a year or two of injuries does but shouldnt be surprised. Look how jack has gone off the radar this season.

Re: We probably won't get the No.1 Pick
i have watched a bit of Carlton in my time as I have family members who follow them and I can honestly say that Judd had his best era at WCE where his bursting through packs at pace and long goals made him about the most exciting player in the league. Once he got to Carlton he seemed to lose his motivation a bit but was still an outstanding player but not what he was. Hodge is a game changer, a motivator and resilient player who does it year after year.plugger66 wrote:gringo wrote:Hodge has had less from the highlight reel but probably on overall out put I would take Hodge who has had season after season of high level footy. Gringo they are just words and mean nothing. Judd 6 times AA 4 at Carlton 2 times Brownlow one at each club 5 times B&F 3 at carlton. Hodge 3 times AA and 2 times B&F. They are facts. Its because Judd has been injured for the last couple of years. I could find posts when Hodge was injured that people said Ball was better than him. Its over the whole career and facts suggest Judd is clearly better.

You are totally correct, it proves nothing, and it reinforces that we could have pick one or three and still not get the best player.
Of course the above is in hindsight. Garry Lyon once commented that he had Luke Ball, Luke Hodge, and Chris Judd in a under 20's team and Ball was easily the fastest.
OP killed him. Who knows if we had have chosen Judd. His shoulders may have given away on us.
So in essense I agree, win as many games as possible. Who was pick one when Lenny was chosen @ 13? Whomever it is I would rather Lenny.
If the kids win like they did against Freo, it means our young kids are delivering. In years to come we may be saying the same about a Luke Dunstan as I said above about Lenny (if you get my drift). This to me is better than wanting pick no1.
The only possible solace I would get from winning ANOTHER wooden spoon would be #1.
But I would give that up in a heartbeat to be as uplifted and excited as I was during and after the win against Freo.

Re: We probably won't get the No.1 Pick
Agreed, but to be fair and realistic I think it is a much more exact science than it was 16 years ago. However we all also know that how you develop the talent is a huge factor as is a little luck on the injury front.stinger wrote:1998 national draft

The other factor is that the higher in the draft you go, the greater the odds that you can pick a talent that will go close to reaching potential.
What I am liking with our current regime is the analysis that seems to be put in before hand as to the relative worth of our picks. For example, last year they didn't rate the draft after about pick thirty so traded accordingly and ended up with three top twenty picks and no further picks. They rated Templeton as a top thirty (but not top twenty) pick in the main draft and so grabbed him straight away in the rookie draft When he wasn't picked up. The year before they rated Lee, and so traded with GWS to get him and a swap of picks as they knew Carlton were into him and would take him at pick eleven if we didn't get him beforehand. The year before they didn't rate any significant difference between pick 20 and 25 and so traded to GWS to get Milera, Saad and pick 25 for our pick 20, and we then picked up Ross with pick 25. Last year, pick 3 was not going anywhere based largely on how they rated the first few picks compared to the latter picks in the first round.
