The greatest Saint of all?

Post: # 1481879Post thejiggingsaint »

I was wondering if Lenny has by virtue of his career ethic of guts, determination, toughness and humility, pur himself up for being "the greatest Saint of all" ? I know that it's always dodgy to make comparisons, particularly when we have stars like Trevor Barker, Harves, Doc, Nicky Winmar and others, but for mine, Lenny would have to be right up there with those illustrious men.

If you read the OP, he is talking about as an all round Saint.

Lockett is definitelya better player. But as an all round package, Lockett does not come close to lenny.

He is so integrated into what the fabric of the club is it's like when harves left. He is synonymous with our club. It's going to leave a huge hole. Milney was probably the next biggest after Lenny of the current crop. He was the electricity that made us sizzle and sang the song loudest. Rooey is a great figure head and representative but he's somehow not in that life blood category to me. This is based on an intangible not ability by the way. Those life blood players like Nathan Burke and co could make guys walk taller next to them despite not being rough or big. The guys that could carry you over the edge of the trench and into battle.

'Greatest of all' is always a good topic Dave. :)

All I'll say is, when assessing the potential candidates, don't forget to travel back in time.

To me Rooey is the greatest of our past decade easily. Sure he sooks a bit but when Roo goes it will be an even bigger hole than Lenny. Two massive holes.

I'm not so sure he will be quite the same. It will leave a massive on field hole and probably that captain who goes out and sells the club but I'm not sure why but Lenny seems like he is St Kilda, Rooey always felt like he could be moved for money or opportunity. Lenny has that kind of personality that you assume he would be loyal to his team and understands his privileged position and that respect is worth more than dollars to him. I could never imagine Lenny or Milney or Harves ever going to the club and demanding more cash or they would leave. Eddie claims Rooey rang him to discuss moving to the Pies last year according to SEN. Maybe that has clouded my vision a bit. It has nothing to do with how great he was and is as a player. Rooey is an amazing competitor and wills himself on like a mad man.

Not the greatest.
But maybe the most loved.

Hayes, like Barker, Harvey, Burke and Loewe before him, embodies the motto 'Strength Through Loyalty'. As does Riewoldt. True saints in every sense.

You just can't go past Lockett. No-one has given me more joy at a game of footy than him. If you didn't see him at Moorabbin then I can understand you entertaining other ideas but for those that did see him there every second week, it has to be Lockett.

I think Doc Baldock should always be number one because he was the captain of our first and sadly to date only premiership side. Plus he also had a big say in us winning it.
Lenny's top 5 along with Plugger, Harvs and Barks.

Lenny is one of our all-time great players, but I would still give the nod the Doc. We have had some great players, but sadly not a lot of great teams. Love to see Lenny stay at the club on some capacity.

I've always believed that the terms 'greatest and 'best' are not necessarily interchangeable.

And I would also add a 'rider' that whatever one's personal opinion is, it can only be with the following words added
'that I've seen'.

The 'best Saint' I've seen are
Baldock
Lockett
Stewart
Harvey
Roo
Winmar
Ditterich
Loewe
Hayes
McIntosh (yes, IMHO he was that good!)

The 'greatest Saint' I've seen are
Harvey
Barker
Doc
Hayes
Roo
Loewe
Frawley
Cowboy
Burke
Winmar (slips down the list because of the nonsense at the end of his career)

the greatest Saint or Greatest player ?

Greatest Saint...Barks comes to mind...he loved the club so much I believe he donated a Car he had won back to the club to help save it.

Yep the media almost made it impossible for the Saints to keep him. They bagged us for our unprofessional attitude and commentators like Rex Hunt and Sam Newman made a big issue about how we let him run wild after he went nuts in a game against Carlton and threw some punches.

I think it's fair to say Lockett was a better player. To me Lenny was a gun but his real talent was his ability to will himself into any game at any stage. Lenny was inspirational because he ran the well dry. lockett was like the mad genius that was so offensively talented but lacked a bit of interest. Lockett is the leading goal kicker of all time. lenny probably doesn't sit within the top 5 AFL midfielders of all time. Doesn't mean he isn't one of the most loved players of all time. Lenny was brave and wilful and wore his jumper with pride- the ultimate soldier. lockett was a freak of nature.

Lenny is reliable and consistent.
He does things that plenty of other players can do.
But Lenny does them time after time, even when he is stuffed, or the side is being overwhelmed.
He just keeps going and is an inspirational leader.

Plugger on the other hand did things that NO-ONE else is capable of.
That is why every time he came near the ball we all got extremely excited because you knew something spectacular might happen- and often did.
Lenny (or anyone else with the possible exception of G. Ablett Snr) could NEVER match Plugger for those excitement levels.

But I do take the point that Plugger would have been a lousy midfielder.
(Though he did early in his career have a few spells in the ruck where he went OK).
