I remember we wanted Harvs to coach us and he went to another club but doesn't look like coming back. How quickly we forget our greats.
He hasnt come back because we didnt regard good enough to be our senior coach. How does it help him if he just learns under AR and our systems. he knows all that. He needs other coaches and how other clubs do things and if he never comes back then bad luck. When was the last great who never left their club and was a successful coach? I cant think of many at all.

Roos
2 clubs though.
Buckley?
Only if you think he has been succesful. I certainly realised he was one but wasnt sure if you would say he is succesful. Also he actually left the pies and went into the media for 2 years. But you are right he never changed clubs. I cant see Lenny doing the media so he will most likely coach next season. Im doubting the saints based on nothing at all. There was a rumour in the paper he wont coach next year and will work for his management team. Who knows really just feel if he coaches he would be better to leave our club.
I don't want ANY of our past champions to coach our club. It hardly ever works out how you'd like it to, and all it does is make that past player love our club a little less.
I recall reading an interview with Peter Schwab who said 'you spend you life at a club, and you fall in love with it, and then you come back to coach it, and you're no longer in love with it anymore.'
Mt best mate (life member of our local club) was appointed coach of our local club a few years back. Got the knife half way through the second year. Still holds a grudge against life long mates - pretty sad and undignified.
Banger was put out that we didn't give him a chance to present at the final interview - imagine how he'd feel when he got sacked, as almost every coach does.

He could have stayed with us and learned the craft under the myriad of coaches he's had during his career.
From Baldock, Sheldon, Alves, Watson, Blight, Thomas, Lyon, Watters and now Richardson (I am sure I've missed some in there). Plus the year he spent at the Blues.
Yep but he doesnt find out how other clubs are run. When was the last succesful coach who never left his club? Now that you have told me all that whats your actual opinion on what lenny should do?

Former players, but not necessarily champions sometimes make top coaches at their original club. Jeans was a struggling backman with the Saints before hanging up his boots and becoming our greatest coach. GT was a serviceable Saints backman and nearly got us into a GF. Baldock(champion) gave every indication that he was taking the team to the next step had his health been better. Kennedy Snr was a solid player at Hawthorn and became their premiership coach. Jezza at Carlton, Jewell at Richmond. It's more a matter of if you have what it takes to coach rather than just being a respected former player who we think would automatically make a good coach.
