Re: Rhys Stanley
I labelled him soft
Because his effort in the contest was exactly that.... Unfortunately deep down he knows it... Which is eating away at his confidence.
He will deteriorate
If you look closely ... Collingwood players targeted him physically and verbally after each soft contest
Youn Frost sprayed him a number of times

I didn't see anyone being overly demonstrative with him. He had an average game but has improved this year. Funny how many have said they would be happy with Jack Watts but will bag Rhys. He's had a very injury prone body and for a long time and looked like an angry pipe cleaner with his build. He's got massive arms now and his body is holding up for the first time. As he gets some confidence in his body he should realise that he can impose himself. I remember watching Tippett and Walker early on and they looked lazy, disinterested and soft a few years later they just got it.
There is nothing to be gained by bagging our players especially ones with confidence issues. He is trying just not getting results right now. He looks like he needs one big break out game to me where he just slots 4 goals and takes a couple of big hangers and he will be off.

Re: Rhys Stanley
If many in this forum had been the coach of Geelong, Hawkins would have been shown the door many year ago...and he was an early pick.
Stanley is a late pick who IMO can fill a useful key forward / 2nd ruck role
I think that too many are looking for him to be the next Roo, rather than being a useful player.
When we eventually draft or trade for the next young gun forward (I will not say next Roo, as that is an unrealistic expectation), Stanley will serve as a useful foil to ease the load and to provide other options up forward.
He is already more than handy in the ruck, and will get better at this aspect of his game.
Yes I want another young gun forward...but midfield is where our biggest problem lies at present. We lack enough gun mids, and future gun mids. We need some start mids to replace Lenny and Joey, and more surprise.
There is no point having two gun forwards if we do have not have a gun midfield group. However if you do have gun midfielders you can make up for forward lacks.

Re: Rhys Stanley
Ironically he wasn't an early pick, he was the straw that broke the father/sons back... The cats were able to pickup selwood with their first pick instead of Hawkins who was a likely top 3 pick outside of the FS rule...saintsRrising wrote:If many in this forum had been the coach of Geelong, Hawkins would have been shown the door many year ago...and he was an early pick.
Apologies... I digress, still irks me that they continue to run around with this massive advantage while everyone marvels at their superpower list.

The essence though is that he was labled as a dud and under-achiever for a long time.

Re: Rhys Stanley
Stanley = <Zac Clarke
But
> Shaun Hampson
(p.s If you want to know why the Tigers are so bad look no further than Shaun Hampson and Matt White.
They lose Matt White who was a pick 5 and then spend pick 28 on Shaun Hampson. Unbelievable! They almost make us look good)
Back to Stanley. Hes a lower-middle of the road Ruckman/Fwd. Not as good as Zac Clarke but maybe a nose ahead of a Shaun Hampson.
Might eek out out 80-100 underwhelming games in the AFL if he's lucky - which is certainly nothing to scoff at. 80-100 more than most.

Re: Rhys Stanley
I'm starting to worry about Rhys the way he keeps getting referred to constantly as an athlete more than a footballer. Bit like Nic Nat and Majak they do well in the ruck where its basically an athletic jumping contest but don't have the footy smarts inbreed in them. He's probably do a bit better without Rooey dominating so much but who knows for sure.

Re: Rhys Stanley
His confidence is smashed. Thing is, its been this way for almost two years.
Drops marks he should be taking.
Second efforts are non existent which is a massive issue.
I don't expect the kid to be a superstar out of the box, but he needs to at least do the basics.
Just watching the ball get run out of the F50 with your hands on your hips just is not good enough.

7saintjake wrote:How many seasons in is Kurt Tippett?
But he kicked 55 goals in 2009 aged 21/22......
So I think you might be pushing the envelope a little if you are wanting to compare Kurt with Rhys.
He is 200 goals ahead of Rhys and 3 years older.
So yes if Rhys kicks 70 this year and next year and the following year he can catch Kurt.
Or to put it another way - If Rhys wins the next three Colemans in a row - starting this year - he will be the same as Kurt at the same age.
Re: Rhys Stanley
Just a simple "seven seasons" would've been fine as an answer.Con Gorozidis wrote:7saintjake wrote:How many seasons in is Kurt Tippett?

Which is why he'd be a good mentor/coach for himBigMart wrote:Please don't compare Stewart Loewe to him

One of the most courageous aerialists in the games history
Re: Rhys Stanley
Comparisons with Loewe & Taylor Walker in this thread are laughable.
Loewe is a great of the game, a star from the beginning and by Rhys's age a competition monster.
Taylor Walker is the same age, 1 draft earlier, and an out and out gun pre knee reconstruction and will be the best forward in the game within 24 months..
Rhys is not an afl footballer unfortunately.

Re: Rhys Stanley
Spot on dragit - this is the unfortunate reality we find ourselves in. There just isn't anyone putting their hand up to take his spot - so he stays on the list and continues to get games unless another club offers up a ridiculously good deal.dragit wrote:Whenever we have one or two players more capable on the list I guess.Enrico_Misso wrote:This is his SIXTH year.

Re: Rhys Stanley
Rhys should be compared with Shaun Hampson who was a pick 28 in 2013 (remarkably)
Thats about his level.
Comparisons to Taylor Walker or Kurt Tippett are like comparing CJ to Gary Ablett .

Re: Rhys Stanley
You seem to be missing the point, Lowe was a rucking forward and so is Stanley. End of comparison. Who on our list currently also plays that combination of positions? and who of our coaches have also played those combinations of positions?Sobraz wrote:Comparisons with Loewe & Taylor Walker in this thread are laughable.

Getting someone like Lowe down to the club to help Stanley might be exactly what he needs. Will that improve him? Who knows? But it will give him the opportunity to improve his game. Maybe he could end up being at least a very handy player.
And for the record Lowe couldn't kick for sht, I remember him missing 20 metres out on a regular basis, but the club in their wisdom brought in Hudson to help him work through it, guess what the rest is history.
But then you've all made up your minds
Re: Rhys Stanley
Loewe was a CHF in the truest sense. He only rucked very occasionally in the second half of his career but I'd hazard a guess that it'd make up less than 5% of his career.Playon wrote:You seem to be missing the point, Lowe was a rucking forward and so is Stanley. There is no comparison as players. Obviously Loewe would be handy for advice as he is a 300 game great.

I always rated him the 2nd best CHF of his time. Including Brereton.
