Im with dragit.
its unfortunate we lost BJ. Obviously he's a gun player.

But the bigger picture is we need to get out salary back from the 'almost winning a flag' years and go back to a team first structure to build our list.
So short term pain for longer term gain.

the reality is with our shithouse drafting from 07 to 11 we werent a snow flakes chance in hell in playing finals after 2012 anyways.

Everyone knew it.

Trying to pretend that if we kept BJ and NDS we would be playing finals this year or next is the stuff of utter fantasy.

No, you're right.

But isn't it a pity we keep selling guns in their prime to try for a shot at the title?

Fletcher, Lockett, Hall, Everitt, BJ, Nick D

Their sales bought us an opportunity but not a win?!

Plus we lost patience with

Rice, Lappin, Lynch, Ball, Joel Smith, Wakelin x2

All of those players went on to perform at there new homes

We got a quick shot.

How about the next team we build... We try and retain the core and try and stay at the top by continually refreshing with our you talent. Turn 3 a year over.

The reason we have been letting quality out the door is because of our insipid drafting and poor list management/player payments out of whack over a 5 year period.

Selective memory.

Didn't we get a pick 13 which we used on Dal for the Hall trade?

We also got a pick for one of the Wakelins which we ended up using on Frazer. WC then ended up getting Daniel Kerr for that pick from memory.

Of course we got pick 13? Hall got a flag....

I don't like losing a gun, at least on that occasion we got compensated. .... And now I be
I eve it's become Billy Longer

We used Wakelin pick on A. Hamill

Pick 18 (Kerr) on Fraser

We also gave up 17 (James Kelly) for Heath Black 4 picks later... In 2001

I was wrong on the Wakelin trade.

My point is that we did well on some of those trades.

It's not the reason that we did not win our flag or two.

In the end it came down to luck.

Surely you arent one of these people who use the players taken by other clubs to decide if we got a good deal or not? I thought you were smarter than that.

Winning flags is never about luck

Stk and it's supporters need to understand this....

Teams who have won flags made their luck. And took their chances... We did not

You must have missed both our flag attempts in 09 and 10. bit of bad luck during both those games. Of course can play a part as can many other things like not enough depth or injuries.

Very patronising P66

I'll bite

We got a good deal on Fraser... WCE drafted very well to get Kerr... That's the risk

We got a fair deal on Dal.... We drafted very well to get Dal

We got a poor deal on MaCEvoy .... But drafted well it seems to get Dunstan and Acres

L.Ball not worth mentioning that Bungle

Lockett deal... Well he was worth 4 first round picks

Good deal on Lappin 22

Goddard was worth a touch more than pick 12... But that was the AFL deciding that... Not as harsh as Ablett/Buddy compo

Dal worth a bit more than pick 25 as above

Lovett wasn't worth a FRP even without the drama... People fail to realise his age and actual output

TDL was along with the drafting of Polo and Pattison as stupid as a decision gets

Jesse Smith worth the risk

Xavier Clarke trade pointless... Unless we were just doing that for him

Colm Negley, Jayden Attard, Zac Dawson... All fair enough with nothing picks

Mark McGough was probably reasonable but his limitations were obvious.

Shane Birss... Fair enough.

Steven King and Charlie Gardiner..... Really good drafting

Matty Clarke... Mistake Brooks, Rix, Kosi should have been given ruck exposure IMO

Re drafting of Fraser... Desperate

Ryan Gamble....

Brett Peake.... Good deal
Farren Ray..... Great Deal
Schnieder and Dempster...... IMO the clubs best ever trade deal!!!

Guerra a good trade

Penny a very good trade

Gram an excellent trade

Fergus Watts... A fair enough trade... Same with Brooks... Both just went bad after injury

Black for 17 (Kelly) history again, you'd still do it ATT

Knobel... Well I reckon he was hopeless.

Our trading has been pretty high quality... Especially trading 2/3 round picks

Lovett biggest error...

Never

You are basically trolling here suggesting that we fluked being in front in the last quarter of two grand finals…

We made our luck and built really sold teams to make consecutive grand finals, pretty universally accepted that we are "unlucky" not have won one… one bounce, one toe-poke the difference.

Unlucky .... One way of looking at it

1/ if we TOOK our chance and MADE our luck in 2009 we would have rightfully won.

2/ all the stats indicate Collingwood should have iced us in the first half of 2010 . But didn't, however when we had a chance to win the game... We DID NOT take it and allowed Collingwood to kick what was a pretty soft goal. We had chances. Did not take them.

Being in front in a GF doesn't win you anything.

Unlucky is the word people with a victim mentality use...

We had an opportunity and failed to seize the moment. That's the difference between winning and losing.

You are one tough man. We were unlucky as the other side may have been had we won. Luck plays a part in nearly all close games. I reckon a few Saints players thought we were unlucky but they have victim mentality.

Every team that wins has obstacles as well... Not an excuse... Deal with them

1997... All I hear is "what if we had Spider and Lazer."

Well
What if they had the 97 Coleman medallist and an 8 time All Australian?
Adelaide in the first GF away from home with perhaps two of their best three players out! Didn't use that as excuse and took their opportunity.
Matthew Scarlett took his opportunity as did Chapman
As did the Cloke

We had great seasons no doubt, but never won!

Are you sure we didnt win. Thanks. Any person with any sort of footy knowledge knows luck plays a part in nearly every close game and it certainly did in 09 and 10. You keep going on though.

God you can sound like a real hard arse sometimes.

Scores level in both grand finals with 2 mins to go and the ball bouncing around like in a pin ball machine and you reckon at that stage of the game luck has nothing to do with it!

You're dreaming.

They weren't unlucky... Why were they unlucky? What because the ball didn't sit up for Milney, or that Mini missed a tackle?

They were beaten.

The bounce of the ball is an anomaly ..... But if you are more skilled you generally win it... If you are more desperate you generally win it...

Things like bad bounces, bad decisions, injuries happen ....

You have to overcome them

Luck plays less of a role in football than you think... Because that can run both ways

Great teams have more 'luck' because they earn it!

How do you know luck plays a less role than i think? How can you say such a thing? Firstly how do you know how much I think luck plays? and secondly what fact is there for you to even say that? Keep going on about it though.

Because you have suggested we lost because we were unlucky?

I would say we lost because we didn't take our chances...

Great teams don't rely on luck... To suggest luck cost us... Is an excuse

I never suggested any such thing. please dont lie to try to win. Do you try to beat your kids in every game you play with them? because it seems you can never lose anything going from what you write on here.

This is spot on. The Cats deserved a goal when Hawkins smashed the ball into the goal post. They are a great side and earned it. I have never read such utter crap in all my life.

And I bet you just brushed it off like that right after the final siren went and quietly thought to yourself:

"Great teams don't rely on luck".
