the stats that don't matter

Post: # 1456245Post saintbrat »

as a relatively 'young' saints fanatic- I was a supporter for years but only in recent decades I have become more aware.. 8-)

but the stats fascinate me-
putting the names of old with the young players coming through now

I find this site a simple was to compare
http://afltables.com/afl/stats/alltime/stkilda.html

to realise how few games some ' well known' names played for the saints.
for example Nathan Wright on 12 games has played as many as
Discher, Don ,
Ferguson, Matthew
McGough, Mark
and Gardiner, Charlie

and Jack Newnes on 31 games is on the same number of games as
Jones, Warren
Davis, Chad
Guerra, Brent
and will equal Gellie, Graeme this week

in the Mid 70 games Jack Steven will match
Jeans, Allan and Killigrew, Alan within weeks
Galt, Rod
Perovic, Val
Mildenhall, Bill
Roberts, Michael
Taylor, Kain
and has passed Sierakowski, Brian

and the Centurian- Jarryn Geary will and has passed-
Hamill, Aaron
Maguire, Matthew
Young,Matthew
and is level with Cazaly, Roy on 99

as he approaches Dunne, Jeff

Gee, I would have thought some of those players had played many more games. I guess that when you don't play many finals the years catch up with you.

Graham Gellie only playing 31 games is one of the greatest tragedies in a long list of tragedies in our history. He really was something very special, his handball skills were comparable with Diesel Williams.

I could have been sure WOW Jones played more than Jack Newnes. How the memory fades.

I see we had Bill Linger play for us.

Hopefully Billy Longer will linger longer than Billy Linger :-)

A very interesting Post, Saintbrat. It seems that some reputations were built on not-so-many games.

You are so, so, so right about Graham Gellie. I remember him well.

We had a very good year under MIke Patterson in 1978 (until Essendon whinged after a hard game and Carl Ditterich was afraid to lift his arms above his head in case he was reported) and Gellie won the best and fairest (it was his first year with the club). He then injured his knee the following year, which slowed him right down. I don't remeber exactly but I think his career ended when he did the OTHER knee. I often wonder if he could have recoverd with the modern reco techniques.

Totally agree! Hence why I'd have him in Mr M's team, despite only the 31 games... less again if you only count pre-knee injury. The best rover I've seen for us.

(Super Duper was great also, and I didn't see Ross Smith at his best.)

In is first year of senior footy he'd be getting thirty-plus possessions (back in the days when that meant actually meant something!)... and nearly every one of them set-be up a team mate for a clean possession. The coaches and stats-folk would love him today!

John McIntosh, Graham Gellie, Rod Owen... knees robbed us (and the game) of three blokes who could have been almost anything. :( Going back just a little further... Bill Stephenson. :(

Fortunately, Rooey plays now and not back then... otherwise we'd probably have him on that list too...

Anyone else Saintsationalists...?

Mind you one could argue with some of them that whilst they were actually on the field, they didn't really play the game.

Not getting more games out of Aaron Hamill probably cost us a flag.

Hard to believe the Doc only played 119 and Ian Stewart 127.

That is the main reason we won only the one flag between 64 and 73.

I also remember seeing Gellie play- would have gone on to be an all time great midfielder if injury hadn't struck him down..incredible skills.

Dunno about that. Darrel left the club at the end of 1968 and Ian went to Richmond in 1971.

We had realistic chances of a flag in 1963, 1965, 1968, 1970 and 1971.

In my opinion, two things stopped us doing better after 1966, which were somewhat related. First, we were slow to move to the drop punt with the consequent elimination of the drop kick and flat punt. Second, Richmond and Carlton moved to the drop punt before all others and won all of the flags from 1967 to 1974 (except 1971, which we should have won).

Re G Gellie, I'm with the OPs.

Best rover I've seen play for St Kilda... I'd have him and John McIntosh in our team or the century... despite how few games each of them played. (George Young and Bill Stephenson are the other two I'd find spots for.)

Back to Gellie... he was ahead of his time, in that every time he got hold of the ball, one knew that the next possession would be a clean one to a St Kilda player.

I don't recall if he also did his other knee, but from memory, he never recovered from that first one... tried to comeback, but couldn't do it anymore.

Lenny only needs 8 tackles on the weekend to over take Jude Bolton and be top of the List all time
http://afltables.com/afl/stats/players.html#t7

Bolton 1490
Hayes 1483

only had 4 at the weekend.
