ian cooper's grandson...
there is a kid named tom lamb playing TAC cup footy this year with dandy stingrays who is the grandson of one of my all time favorite footballers..... ian cooper...a member of our 1966 flag winning team....tom is a 191cm midfielder and a bit of a gun it seems.....like his granddad he can take a good overhead mark and knows how to find the goals....according to inside football, he had a day out against murray last year collecting 35 possessions....he was one of the boys who trained ith the saints over summer as part of the ais academy program.....
.everybody still loves lenny....and we always will

Ian was struck down with illness in his prime from memory, tried a comeback but wasn't the same player he once was.Played with Sandy after that with some success as a full forward.Great player on his day

Re: ian cooper's grandson...
In Cooper was a 'bag of bones'........ his figure couldn't throw a shadow. Took some brilliant marks, climbing on backs and shoulders of opponents. Thatch of sandy blond straggly hair that made him stand out, when his skinny frame couldn't up seen!!!!

Can't recall who it is........... there is a poster on this site who has 'Coops'.... as his/her avatar. It shows one of Cooper's typical climb up on the shoulders of an opponent to take a spectacular mark in the avatar.
#15 was Coops number if I recall correctly

Re: ian cooper's grandson...
I think it was rheumatic fever he suffered from............ yep he never seemed to get back to his best form after that. Think he was selected for the Victorian side, but his illness stopped him from getting a game.bergsone wrote:Ian was struck down with illness in his prime from memory, tried a comeback but wasn't the same player he once was.Played with Sandy after that with some success as a full forward.Great player on his day

Re: ian cooper's grandson...
I have very fond memories of Ian Cooper, mainly at Moorabin, especially his big leap and mark.
As a kid playing kick to kick, if anyone took a hanger, it was referred to as a "Cooper". Think it may have become "Jezza" after 1970.

Re: ian cooper's grandson...
i played against him ...under 15's.....i picked him up and threw him to the ground...he was as light as a feather....gave me a shock actually....loris wrote:In Cooper was a 'bag of bones'........ his figure couldn't throw a shadow. Re: ian cooper's grandson...
If he does turn out to be a gun at AFL level, we'd better get him. There almost should be a grandfather - grandson rule like the father-son rule. Promising signs that he's playing well in the TAC Cup and did some pre-season training with us.

Re: ian cooper's grandson...
From "Heros with Haloes" bt Russell Holmesby
" Cooper strolled into the St Kilda club off the street and asked if he could have a tryout. He was picked in a practice match the following Saturday morning at 8.30 and after collecting a few kicks in the first quarter he was taken from the ground and was told he would be in the next practice game.
As he stood munching on a pie before the next game he was approached by the Under 19s coach Ron Wilson who said Allan wants to know if you are enjoying the pie. "I said whoever Allan is, tell him im enjoying the pie. Thats the first time i met Jeansie" ".
Anyway good luck to his Grandson.

Satchmo is correct. Mini would have won the "Norm Smith Medal" if they had them in 1966.

Re: ian cooper's grandson...
I've got a recolection of Cooper taking the mark of the century. From memory he jumped over the bloke who was jumping over the pack, possibly against Essendon, in about 65-66 possibly at Moorabin.
Then I reckon I met Ian Cooper about 15 years ago, he was a driver/courier delivering stuff. Looked wearthered and still really skinny.

Nothing like a sneaky little deed poll job to throw the opposition recruiters off the scent.
