Gwilt is under rated on here
Always watch Gwilt closely because he is one of my favourite players, but tonight he was massive.
Can only remember him getting beaten one on one once, other than that he didn't lose a battle all night.
Every time he had the ball in the back half he hit a target.
Super, super important to the team.
If Fisher comes back fit and Bruce or Delaney (apologies for spelling) can hold a monster forward and Gwilt is allowed to go back to the third tall defender then out back line looks a lot better!
Must try and always get the ball in his hands coming out of the back half!

Mmm... I think you're being a bit bias to be honest. I think he was beaten a few times. He also looked a bit slow too.
That said his disposal was back to it's best and his goal in the last 1/4 was epic.
Will be interesting to see how he is used this season

Re: Gwilt is under rated on here
Mixed bag I reckon.
Great goal and did some nice things for sure.
But tonight was against possibly the worst fwd line in afl history.
Looked slow at times and lacks urgency.
But did play ok but could also be a liability against quality opposition.

Always interesting when people say a player lacks urgency.
Would be astounded if any player ever went out on the field not bothered of they win or not.

Re: Gwilt is under rated on here
Definitely not underrated by this board - opening post is incorrect there.
He gets his dues. Good player when the game is ahead of him.
And I'm a big fan of him, because when he does something well, it looks great. Always feel in my guts he can cost you a goal or two with a bad decision.

Clueless and mediocre petty tyrant.

I dont mean in that way. I just mean he always loooks for the switch first.saintjake wrote:Always interesting when people say a player lacks urgency.

Sometimes he does more damage when he just runs straight ahead.
Re: Gwilt is under rated on here
He has played as a fullback for the past 4 years, let him off the leash in the Goddard role, there is no one better suited to the role than him.Con Gorozidis wrote:I dont mean in that way. Re: Gwilt is under rated on here
Seems to have lost a bit of pace, was never express but at the moment he's one of the players were everyone is thinking " kick it" as his apponent closes in.
Hopefully it's not a permanent thing and just something that will return with more time
He should fare , if he gets released from having to Play above his height and weight on the bigger forwards. But Delaney was pretty iffy.. Hope it was nerves?

Re: Gwilt is under rated on here
Was worried about him early as he looked lost and slow.
But after half time he seemed to get the feel of the game and his calmness in the last line steadied us a bit. And his kicking got better too

Re: Gwilt is under rated on here
To be blunt , that was his best game fora long, long time.
Last season he was out of it, and his once great kicking, last year an Achilles Heel.

Great hands.
Never loses his cool.
And it appears his disposal is back indicating he is "over" the knee.
He isn't a key defender - that's Fisher's role.

Then where does he play?
Delaney, Fisher, Gwilt, Roberton, Gilbert, Wright, Newnes, Webster, Geary, Dempster
Can't all play in the back 6?

Gwilt Skill Needed
Coaches' confidence in Gwilt well vindicated I thought. For me James is a much needed player that brings enormous stability to our young up-coming team. In so many ways he is important. Allowed to play in his natural position - taking the 3rd. tall and having licence to roam around a bit and kick to possession from our defensive area he is potentially a great get out of jail player. Last weekend (on TV) i was impressed with his strength and his ability to make it a factor in the game. If he has a bit of luck and keeps getting game-time I think he will flourish all the more. I also think Delaney and perhaps Bruce soon will benefit from Gwilt's presence. James and the older statesman Dempster can help Delaney settle in quicker.
I believe Gwilt playing well in a role that recognises his strengths as demonstrated in the Lyon-era greatly benefits his team-mates.
Loved the Gwilt goal and hope it just adds to his enjoyment of the game under the new coach.
I thought Wright looked like he was enjoying himself as well so a couple of good performances presenting in the backline is much appreciated.
Well on the build up to Rd. 2 and the young Saints are underdogs again but another 4 pts would be sweel indeed !

The boy can play and we can build a defence around him that will have respect.

Gwilt had a very good game, but it's also worth noting that the Dees had no forward line whatsoever.saintjake wrote:Always watch Gwilt closely because he is one of my favourite players, but tonight he was massive.
